In the late hours, holed up in the House of Daena, while Kaveh smiled so brightly up at him looking exhausted and a mess, Alhaitham realized he was in love with Kaveh.
It was not a sudden rush of unfamiliar emotion. Time did not cease to move forward. The world did not halt for a breath while it waited for Alhaitham’s next move. He looked at Kaveh, and it clicked in his head like an irrefutable fact. The sun sets at the end of the day, Sumeru is the nation of wisdom, Alhaitham is in love with Kaveh, and the world continues to spin madly on.

"Are you dating him?" Tighnari asked one afternoon when he caught the Scribe alone in the hallway.
"Always." Alhaitham replied, without giving it a second thought.
"Archons, Alhaitham. Does he know you're dating him?"
Alhaitham snorted, a flush dashing across his high cheekbones. "What do you think?"
Tighnari leveled a piercing stare at Alhaitham in return. "I think you both must've fallen out of the Stupid Tree and hit every branch on the way down." He shook his head. "Come on, Alhaitham! At some point, one of you is going to have to say something!"Alhaitham figures out his sexuality at fourteen years old. It takes Kaveh nearly twice as long. That doesn't stop Kaveh from making out with Alhaitham all over Sumeru in the interim.

Alhaitham really liked his routine. It was easy to follow and predictable. Everything was always in the right place, where it should be.
When he returned home today, he expected the usual dinner with a side of playful banter.
He didn't expect this.
Kaveh was standing in the living room, surrounded by suitcases and boxes. He was filling one of them with what little books he had, taking them one by one off of their shared bookshelf.
Alhaitham felt like someone had poured a bucket of ice cold water over him.
He changed his mind. Today was a bad day.
