'So all I did was shrug half-heartedly, which made his eyebrows tweak softly. The pupils in his hazel eyes were huge as we stared at each other, like I could see right into his soul if I just tried hard enough. His knee hit mine again, calmly, but it didn't move away this time.
"I'm here," he whispered, just loud enough over the music for me to hear.
And for a moment, it was just us two.

Something in my chest felt heavy. Felt *off*. The world came rushing back into focus and I pulled my knee away quickly and looked back out the window, trying to focus on the music instead of the crushing weight in my chest. My face felt hot. I could feel Will shifting away now, back towards the other side of the car, back behind Robin, but I tried not to think about it. I tried not to think about anything at all.'

Summary

Summary
Jason had been aware of his slowly deteriorating mental state, but he could still function. It wasn't like he had never felt like this before. There were matters more important to attend to. His failing mental health wasn't worth a glance if it meant wasting time.
But it had been a long life. And some things just weren't worth saving. Some lives just didn't deserve a second chance.
