Summary
Now that he’s risen through the ranks to Wingleader, Xaden Riorson only has one goal for his last year at Basgiath: Get all the marked kids bonded and graduated so they can fight the real enemy lurking at the borders.
The only problem is that Violet Sorrengail, the general’s youngest daughter, has also joined the Rider’s Quadrant this year. He doesn’t know why she’s here, what her plans are, or if he can trust her. All he knows is that he can’t seem to stay away.This is Fourth Wing retold from Xaden’s POV. It follows the dialogue and timeline from Fourth Wing with my own interpretations and theories of Xaden’s actions and feelings. As it was written before the release of Iron Flame, all ideas and theories are just that – theories. Many elements are my own head cannons/speculation and are unconfirmed by Rebecca Yarros.
I would recommend reading Fourth Wing first as there are major plot spoilers throughout!

“What are you doing?” Violet hisses down the bond, eyes narrowing as she shoots a glance over her shoulder at me.
“Reminding Tecarus that he can’t have you.”
It’s not a lie. It may not be my primary motivation, but it’s not a lie because every minute we spend here is another minute I worry about Tecarus doing all he can to collect her, just like he’s collected so many others. To him, she’s only a weapon, a tool, an oddity. And tomorrow, he wants her to perform parlor tricks to prove herself. I clench my jaw and slip my hand higher, thumb brushing the bare skin at her spine.
She shivers.
But then she twists out of my touch, turning back to Liam as she takes another sip of her wine, his eyes darting down to her mouth as she swallows. “You sure it’s Tecarus you’re reminding?”

“Wait!” Violet yelled out, on the edge of the dream’s conscious plane, pleading, “I know that was your dream!” her voice echoed in the dark room, painful reverberations bouncing about in her head. And all that remained was empty silence. She’d gone from his dream to hers, and wherever the in-between was, this was the void that now separated them.
Xaden was icing her out. He didn’t want her to find him, not even in his dreams.
And so, she decided, I’ll just have to follow the cold and find you.
Because when had Violet ever followed a single rule Xaden had asked her to follow?
