Chapter 1: Verse 1

Chapter Text

It’s at stake again, it’s dangerous again
So bad why, we are, yeah
To withstand it more, to sustain it more
So hard hard, it can’t

"Wanna be friends? I'm Kim Seokjin." a tall boy with chestnut brown hair and even kinder eyes extended his hands hesitantly towards a smaller, albino looking boy with eyes and hair so black that they seem infinite. Min Yoongi yawned when he saw the hand in front of him, replied, "Not interested." and went back to sleep.

"Min Yoongi." Ignore.

"Suga!" Ignore.

"Agust D!!" Ignore.

"Hey! Shory!!" What the fudge did you call me?

Yoongi spun around so fast, he looked blurry; almost like an optical illusion. "You want to die, Jin-ah!?" he asked through gritted teeth. "Eh, respect your hyung, kay? What got your panties in a bunch so early in the morning?" Jin asked, laughing. "Holly woke me up but I couldn't possibly hurt her cause she so cute; so I'm mad at the world instead." Yoongi replied, adjusting his backpack. "Whoa, I guess its true shorter people are the devil's spawns." Jin muttered under his breath; earning him a kick at his behind from a still pissed off shortcake with excellent hearing.

"Suga!"

Yoongi turned around, looking at long limbs and even broader shoulders running towards him. Awkwardly. "You should seriously not run. Ever." he said as Jin caught up to him. "I know." Jin wheezed. "Also, stop calling me Suga. or Agust D or anything that remotely refers to my height." Yoongi said as he picked up his pace. Being late to class was not something he was particularly fond of. "But why?" Jin asked, finally managing to normalize his breathing. "it-It just sounds weird. Call me Yoongi. Its my name afterall." Yoongi replied, shrugging his shoulders. Jin looked thoughtful for a while before replying' "Nah, that's boring. I'll figure out a nickname for you." Yoongi sighed. Somehow deep down, he knew he was going to hate it with every fibre of his being. It was during recess that Jin told him his nickname, one that would be stuck for life regardless whether the person being referred to liked it or not. "Fungus!" Jin yelled, happily. Yoongi choked on his lunch and had to gulp down a whole bottle of water to prevent himself from suffocating. He glared at Jin who kept on smiling, his eyes cat like slits. "What kind of stupid name is that!?" Yoongi glared. "A good one." Jin said simply. "I fucking don't want it. Use that and I will ignore you." Yoongi hissed. "Let me explain myself." Jin said, completely unfazed by Yoongi. "I actually though of calling you Rock but figured you might get extremely proud of being compared to The Rock, so that was a no-no. Fungus grows on rocks, so it still gets the point across and I think its a cute name. Also, fungus is like the perfect epitome of lazy." Yoongi stared at Jin, wondering how in the world was the other guy not only older than him but also his friend. How in the world was Yoongi stuck with this guy with a brain no one could possibly understand. Yoongi was in no mood nor intended on sparing any sort of energy to get into an argument with Seokjin. "Fudge, whatever. Just don't call me that in public." he said quietly. Jin smiled.

"You got to be fuc-fudging kidding me!?" Yoongi said, looking like a deer trapped in a headlight. "Nope, I'm not. You promised, fungus boy." Jin whispered, sitting crossed legged on the mat on the floor of his one room apartment. Yoongi didn't move. He was exasperated. How did he get into this mess? Well, he knew exactly how he got into it but still, he didn't expect Jin to ask that of him. "Come eat, the food is getting cold." Jin said gently, watching Yoongi with amusement. It was funny watching a boy who never had much expressions to begin with; show so much of it on his face. Yoongi sighed loudly and plopped himself down beside Seokjin. Today's menu was pork bulgogi and soft tofu jjigae. Yoongi's stomach was as loud as a whale in heat. Jin laughed. "Dammit, fungus. Why act so tough when it's obvious you are hungry?" Jin asked as he served the food with pipping hot rice. Yoongi ignored him and stuffed his face with food. How he loved Jin's cooking. He didn't know Jin could cook tasty dishes like that. Everytime he comes over, Jin cooks for him whatever his heart desires. Today, out of the blue, Seokjin asked if he could ask for a wish and Yoongi, too preoccupied and salivating looking at the food sizzling on the stove said he would grant anything, anything as long as Jin continues cooking for him and sadly for Yoongi, Jin doesn't forget promises even though he might forget anything and everything else. After dinner Yoongi helped Seokjin clean the dishes and prayed, undeterred by the fact that it was useless; that Jin had forgotten their earlier promise. "Shall we go to sleep?" Yoongi asked, almost too hopefully. Jin smiled and said, "Sure. Once you have sang for me." Yoongi groaned. "Do I really have to? You know I suck at singing. I can rap, if you want?" he said, giving Jin a half smile. Jin bit his lips, eyebrows furrowed and glared at Yoongi, "Are you going against your promise? Fine. I'm going to bed." Jin was comfortably wrapped in his pink Hello Kitty blanket when he heard it. "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine...." Jin did his best not to laugh at Yoongi's out of tune singing but he couldn't help himself from grinning widely. Seokjin knew Yoongi would stop singing the moment the turned to look at him, so he stayed still. "You make me happy when skies are grey- I swear to god, if you tell anyone this!- You never know, dear, how much I love you.-Fudge, Jin if you laugh at me!- Please don't take my sunshine away. "I'm done. Don't you dare ask me to sing that bloody song again." Suga fumed and got into bed beside Seokjin. In the darkness, Yoongi heard a soft thank you and pretended to already be fast asleep.

"Fungus, have you decided on what you want to do after high school?" Jin asked on one of those rare nights Yoongi craved Seokjin's companionship, his touch, his voice, his presence. Yoongi didn't answer immediately. He hummed contentedly as Jin ran his fingers through his hair, a low deep throat purr emitting as Jin kissed his nose. A gentle nip on his ears indicated Jin was impatient and wanted a response. Eyes closed, Yoongireplied monotonously, "I want to be a rock." Jin's windshield cleaning laughter irritated Yoongi tremendously. Rubbing his eyes open, whatever he wanted to say, to curse, to spit, died on his lips as he took in the profile of Kim Seokjin under the moonlight. God, he was beautiful. Yoongi had always wondered why Seokjin liked him in the first place. Jin was relentless in his pursuit of befriending Yoongi and on one sweaty hot summer evening, Jin kissed him. Yoongi didn't reject Jin but he didn't respond either. After a few more awkward kisses and nervous sexual tension between them, Yoongi decided that he didn't exactly hate Seokjin's touch or his lips for the matter. Somewhere along the way, he fell hard and doubted he could ever feel that way for anyone ever again; man or woman or whatever in between. But there was no way in heaven, earth or hell will he ever admit that to Jin. "I want to be a policeman." Yoongi said slowly; Jin's laughter came to an abrupt end and smiled. A beautiful smile but Yoongi thought it was a sad one. "I want to be a doctor. Does this mean after this year, we can't be together?" Jin asked softly. A lump formed in the base of his throat, constricting his airways, stinging his eyes and shooting sharp bursts of pain to his heart. Yet, he remained motionless. The quiet, warm droplets painting his face and Jin's hand reflexively holding onto Yoongi's arm made him cuss at the world. In the end, he decided to say nothing.
