Living in the dorms had its perks for everyone. Some liked living close to friends, some liked being able to sleep in since the school was closer, and in Todoroki's case, he loved being away from his father and closer to Midoriya.
The boy enjoyed seeing Midoriya constantly, and learning new things about his personality as time went on. Although they were still in the beginning stages of their relationship, they spent a lot of time together, so it wasn't unusual for one of them to show up at the other's room unannounced. Todoroki used the time spent together as a way to learn things about the green haired boy that he hadn't known before.
He had just entered Midoriya's room when it happened.
Todoroki knew that Midoriya Izuku was a fanboy through and through, since it was apparent within the first five minutes of meeting him usually. It didn't bother Todoroki, really, he just never understood. His father wasn't as much of a "hero" as everyone else thought, and he didn't really give Todoroki time to watch tv or do fun things while growing up, so he never really got into the same things most kids his age did.
What Todoroki hadn't known about, however, was Midoriya's fixation on anime. Everyone knew he had a fascination with heroes, so a fascination with anime wasn't exactly a big stretch - especially considering the fact that they live in Japan. When Todoroki found out, he wasn't really surprised - he just added it to his mental list of his boyfriend's (many) interests.
What was surprising however, was how he found out.
Todoroki knocked on the green haired boy's door, not too long after dinner, but got no answer. He waited a few seconds before going in anyway, knowing Midoriya wouldn't mind. He walked in slowly and quietly, trying to not disturb whatever was going on.
Midoriya was lying on his stomach, laptop in front of him and pillow under his arms to support himself, legs spread out behind him. The laptop was facing the opposite direction of Todoroki, allowing him to have a clear view of his boyfriend's face - especially the tears streaming down said face, shiny from the laptop's glow.
"Izuku?" Todoroki asked cautiously. He didn't know why he was crying, but knowing his boyfriend's crying habits it could really be anything.
"Oh, Shouto," Midoriya chuckled nervously, closing his laptop and wiping at his face. "I didn't hear you come in."
"Why were you crying?"
"It's... nothing, really. Just an anime. Come over here." He replied, moving over slightly and patting the bed as an invitation.
He hesitantly went over, sitting next to his boyfriend and putting a hand on his shoulder. "Are you sure?" Todoroki inquired.
"Yeah, it's just..." Midoriya began, looking at a loss for words. "Here, I'll show you."
Opening his laptop, Todoroki didn't know what type of anime he was expecting. Did Midoriya like romance? Did he watch action? Comedy? The last one seemed unlikely, considering the tears, but Todoroki has seen Midoriya cry over way less. One time they went to the aquarium and saw a turtle that seemed to be smaller than Midoriya's hand - the tears he produced in that moment must've been enough to fill a tank.
A genre that hadn't crossed his mind was the sports genre. He didn't really think of Midoriya as the sporty type, but that just added fun to the learning.
Still, he didn't really know how an anime about volleyball could bring someone to tears.
"Look, watch this." Midoriya drew Todoroki out of his thoughts as he pressed play. The scene playing out on the laptop was of an orange haired boy with a bike talking to a blonde girl. The orange haired boy had a bandage on his face, and was talking about someone he considered a "partner."
Still confused, Todoroki looked at his boyfriend for an explanation. Midoriya paused the episode before speaking.
"So basically, Hinata - that's the ginger one - got into a fight with Kageyama, this tall black haired boy who constantly looks like he's mad at the world. They were just starting to get along, and Hinata looked so sad I couldn't help but start crying. I felt like I needed to protect him..." Midoriya trailed off, blushing.
"Like the turtles?"
"Exactly! Like the turtles!"
"Why didn't they get along in the first place?"
"When they were in junior high, they were on opposite teams and had a match against each other. Kageyama's team won and he said some rude things which started it all, but now they're in high school and on the same team."
"Who was the girl then?"
"Yachi, she's the team's second manager; she'll take over when the third years-" he paused abruptly, staring at the screen, eyes watering again. "When the third years leave... but I love the third years a lot, I don't want them to leave."
"What are they like?" Todoroki asked, hoping to keep his boyfriend from crying. It seemed to work, as Midoriya began explaining their names, positions, and personalities.
Truthfully, Todoroki could do this all day. Listening to Midoriya talk was soothing, no matter what he talked about. Midoriya could wax poetic about anything, and Todoroki would hang on to every single word as if it were an angel speaking them. One may as well have been, Todoroki thinks.
"Shouto," Midoriya began, seeming to hesitate. Todoroki gave him his attention (not that he even took it away in the first place), patiently waiting for him to continue. "Do you want to watch it from the beginning with me?"
Todoroki mulled it over quietly for a few seconds, weighing the pros and cons. On the plus side, he'd get more insight to Midoriya's interests and personality. He could also continue to listen to him ramble. The only negatives he could think of were him not liking the show but not wanting to tell Midoriya, since it seemed to mean a lot to him.
"What if we watch the first episode and you tell me if you want to continue?" Midoriya asked, seeming to catch on to Todoroki's hesitation.
"Okay." Todoroki complied, considering the positives far outweighed the negatives. There were hardly any negatives in the first place, anyway. He mimicked Midoriya's position as said boy pushed the laptop to be more in the middle of the two.
So that's what they did: watched an anime about volleyball. Todoroki didn't really get the premise at first, but he continued watching anyway since Midoriya seemed to like it so much. He talked about his favorite characters and their stats, the characters he didn't like as much, and reacted to every detail - verbally, physically, and sometimes both.
The taller boy paid attention to the show since he wanted to be able to understand Midoriya's inevitable rant about it whenever they stopped watching, but he paid slightly more attention to the boy next to him.
Todoroki didn't understand it. How could one person be so cute? Especially while doing something so mundane. It didn't take long for him to learn that Midoriya looked cute doing pretty much anything, but it still took him by surprise most of the time.
The boys lost track of time, not noticing until they heard movement through the hall - Aoyama was always an early riser, generally taking a long time to get ready.
Although they didn't have classes, Todoroki was still shocked the find out they stayed up all night together. Glancing at Midoriya, he was equally as shocked.
"Guess we got too caught up, huh?" Midoriya shyly rubbed the back of his neck, an action that Todoroki tried really hard to not find endearing.
"Maybe we should sleep and continue later? We still have a few hours before Iida will come around to make sure everyone is up. A little sleep is better than none at all." Todoroki suggested, getting up and stretching. He didn't really want to go back to his room, but they both really needed to rest.
"Shouto... do you maybe... want to stay here? It'd be too much to go all the way to your room, and since Aoyama is awake he'd see you and then we'd never hear the end of it! Unless, of course, you don't want to. I don't want to make you stay if that's not what you-"
"Sure." Todoroki cut him off, surprising the both of them. It was the first time they'd spend the night together - although technically it wasn't night - and sleeping next to Midoriya sounded appealing in so many ways.
Midoriya brightened instantly, getting up to get clothes. "You can borrow some pajama pants from me, they're kinda big on me so they should fit you perfectly!" He exclaimed, handing Todoroki the pants and ushering him towards the bathroom. "I know this is all last minute but it should be fine!"
Todoroki vaguely thought about how this was his first sleepover, and how he didn't mind that it was with Midoriya of all people, but he was soon brought out of his reverie by Midoriya's voice.
"So what did you think of the anime?"
"It was... nice. Better than I expected."
"That's so great to hear! Who's your favorite character?" Midoriya asked, sounding ecstatic.
"Yamaguchi."
"Really? Mine's Tsukishima! I know he's kind of a jerk to most people, but I think it's mostly a facade. Since he had all of that with his brother, it's easier for him to just close everyone off. Why is he your favorite?"
Todoroki didn't really think about that. He just kind of knew. It happened before he could think about it, which was odd considering Todoroki always thought before he acted. Yet his brain did nothing when he blurted "he reminds me of you."
Midoriya flushed a beautiful shade of red, and Todoroki hid his blush by taking the pants Midoriya offered and heading to the bathroom.
Todoroki quickly changed, only realizing how tired he was without Midoriya by his side to give him energy. Strangely, he didn't really feel too nervous about spending the night in Midoriya's dorm. After all, they were close before dating, so not much had changed.
Walking out of the bathroom, Todoroki tried to be surprised about Midoriya's pajamas - he really did try - but seeing his boyfriend in an All Might kigurumi only brought a smile to his face. He was head over heels for Midoriya.
Midoriya smiled at him, a dazzling smile that never failed to turn Todoroki's insides into mush - awkward moment from earlier forgotten. He went to one side of the bed, leaving space for Todoroki next to him, which he happily occupied. "Goodnight, Shoto."
"Goodnight, Izuku."
It still wasn't awkward between the two. Not when Todoroki turned to face Midoriya, and not when Midoriya scooter further back, pressing his back to Todoroki's chest. With a smile on his face, Todoroki thought of how he could get used to this as he drifted off to sleep.
