Work Text:
It was one of those regular sundays where some would visit their parents, have some afternoon tea and talk about the weather and other meaningless subjects. Enjoying each others presence and have this homey family feeling like nothing in the world matters except this right now.
Some would sit in their garden, drinking freshly made lemonade and read a book while doing some sunbathing, enjoying the last warm days until autumn comes around.
Some, but not everyone.
For Bakugou Katsuki it was the first sunday after he was kidnapped by the league of villains and rescued by his so called friends and classmates as if he was some damsel in distress. It was the first sunday after he was told that with his attitude and powers he was more suited for a villain instead of a hero, a born ruler. Tch. As if they knew anything about him!
Katsuki sat with his parents in their living room, forced to attend some family time. While his father was reading the sunday papers, his mother drank her tea and was lost in some gossip magazine. Katsuki just sat there with an empty teacup in his hands, doing nothing. Silently brooding while they lived their happy life as if nothing happened. He felt like suffocating. The room suddenly felt a lot smaller and crowded then it was. He felt the urge to leave as fast as possible when he stood up and hastened towards the front door, ready to throw on some shoes.
“Hey brat! Where the heck do you think you're going this late?” His mother Bakugou Mitsuki demanded from him, her thin eyebrow raised in confusion. She put her teacup aside and walked into the direction of her son, ready to stop him.
Katsuki didn't bother to look up nor stop his actions. “Out. I need some fresh air old hag!” And out he was.
Katsuki wasn't even looking where he was going as he ran across the streets, passing building after building. He just wanted to be as far away as possible from his parent's house. The streets were mostly empty apart from some lone strangers he didn't know but didn't care about either.
As he stopped to take a break he looked around to see where he was and immediately recognized that he had run into the forest where he played as he was around four or five. In front of him the small makeshift bridge he once fell down and into the tiny river beneath it. A small scowl now adorning his face when he remembered what happened afterwards.
Deku's round freckled face was hovering above his own, his small hand offered towards his own to help him up. “Are you alright Kacchan? You're not hurt are you?” Deep emerald eyes sparkling with worry Katsuki didn't need as his own face darkened in anger as he swatted the others boy hand away. “Buzz off Deku! I don't need your saving! I'm perfectly fine on my own, quirkless!” Even though he was a small preschooler his words stung deeper then needles. The hurt in the green haired boy's eyes almost drowning him. “I...I'm so.sorry Kacchan! I didn't mean to...” Izuku began. Katsuki just rolled his eyes. “Don't care stupid. Now MOVE!” His hands sending small explosions to scare the other boy off as he stood up.
Katsuki shook his blond head. The memory was as clear as glass and he almost felt bad for it. Katsuki sat down and let his legs wing back and forth as he looked over the scenery in front of him. He picked up a few small stones from next to him and skipped them over the water. Watching them sink down deeper and deeper. He thought back to all the shit he had done these past years and his mind wandered more then once back to Deku. What he had done to him all these years... If that wasn't something that classified him as a villain....
Maybe those bastards were right after all. He was a shitty guy regarding all those things. Hell if they picked him based on what they saw during the sports festival and thought of him as a villain, he didn't want to know what they would've said when they knew about his previous escapades. With all the shit he had done back then he definitely was more of a villain then a hero. At least that had to be what he was in the eyes of his former childhood friend.
“Tch. Thinking back to what I did to that useless extra Deku I always was more of a villain. Hell, I even burned the notebook from that little fucker and told him to jump off a roof and kill himself. Damn, I'm such a pathetic loser. Maybe they were right, and I'm more suited for a villain. It's not like I ever did something selfless or heroic like that shitty nerd. That little fucker was more heroic without a frickin' quirk then those around him with one...” Katsuki angrily huffed as he skipped more stones. If what he had done to that fucking nerd back all those years ago didn't classify him as a villain then he didn't know.
“I don't think that you're a villain.”
Katsuki was interrupted in his musing from no one other then the green haired threat he was thinking about not a minute ago. His scowl deepened at the sudden intrusion. He crossed his arms over his chest before he spoke. “What the hell do you want you idiot! Are you stalking me or some shit like that?”
Izuku laughed a bit as his green eyes watched the taller boy on the bridge. “Sorry to disappoint you. But sometimes when I need to clear my head, I take a small run and sometimes this is where I come to take a break because this place is rather peaceful and since it holds so much precious memory to me I...” Midoriya nervously tapped his feet as he observed the blond boy sitting in front of him. He let his gaze wander around to take everything in. It sure was a long time ago when he was here. Nothing much had changed though but still. With the setting sun it was a sight to witness.
Katsuki grew more and more impatient. Not only was he disturbed by that useless loser but now that loser stood even more useless around and acted like there was nothing to worry about, muttering about shit he didn't care about. A vein throbbed on the forehead of the blond boy. He gritted his teeth. “Are you just standing there and creep the fuck out of me or what? If you're staying here then at least sit down or whatever, I don't care but don't just stand there and act all peaceful. And stop with that mumbling. I hate when you're like this!” His tone was harsh but the smaller boy didn't seemed to fazed with his behaviour as he settled himself down. Only mere centimetres apart from Bakugou.
Here they sat, an oddly peaceful silence between them. A bit tense but not awkward. Together they watched the sunset, painting the sky in hues of orange, red and yellow. Sunlight dancing over the stilled water. Only the sounds of the chirping birds were heard.
He didn't know how long they sat like this, side by side, not saying anything. But he felt the need to say something. The silence almost killed him.
Katsuki took a deep breath before he spoke. “I think I should quit being a hero.”
Izuku looked at him confused. “Huh? Why Kacchan?”
Bakugou looked his former friend directly into the eyes. “After all the shit I pulled the past years, I don't think that I fit into the description of a hero, shitnerd. I think that maybe... Maybe those idiots were right and I'm better off as a villain.”
“And you think so because...?” Izuku asked, his head tilted to the side and staring at his taller companion. Green hair fell into his freckled face, covering his eyes.
Katsuki didn't meet his eyes, instead he stared back to the creek under his feet. Some ducklings were swimming there. His face was indifferent and hard to read, ruby red eyes fixed onto their owner's lap. “Fuck! You should know better then anyone else why I'm more suited in the role as a villain then a hero you idiot! Have you already forgotten what I put you through all those years? Have you forgotten all those bruises you have because of me? How many times I tested my quirk on you and how many times I hurt you over and over again, shitface? You of all people should at least consider me as a villain am I wrong?” His voice was shaking, fists clenched and teeth gritted. He dared not to look the smaller boy into his eyes. After all those years of torture he put the smaller boy through he didn't know if he deserved being a hero.
As he felt a warm hand on his shoulder, Katsuki looked up. “You alone determine what you are. If it's a hero or a villain is in your hands. No one else can take this from you. You alone decide which path you're going. If you don't like how your life is going right now, change it. No one else can change that but you. It lies in your hands alone.” Izuku smiled at him reassuringly.
“That doesn't answer my question Deku!” Katsuki hollered at him.
Izuku just shrugged his shoulders at his outburst. “Wrong decisions don't make you a villain Kacchan. Giving up on your morals and dreams make you one. We can learn from our past and use that knowledge to become even better then before. If you truly want to become a hero and advocate for your ideals then so be it. Even All Might made some wrong decisions and look where he is now! No one is perfect and those who accept their weakness and try to overcome them instead of crying about it are those who are destined to become the best heroes. ” His green eyes are fixed on Katsuki's ruby red eyes, his smile as beaming as always.
Katsuki was speechless for a moment before he bursted into roaring laughter. “Since when are you this fucking wise fuckmunch? Do you really believe in all this shit?”
Izuku didn't respond to his harsh words, instead he smiled at him as if he hadn't heard those insults. “Yeah I do believe in what I said. If I had heard on all this shit people said about me or told me to do, I wouldn't be here right now. I wouldn't sit right next to you now on the bridge we played on when we were younger. I wouldn't be All Mights successor. Instead I would've jumped from a roof like someone told me to. But instead I choose to follow my dream and become a hero despite everything I was told back then. I never gave up on my morals or dreams because someone told me. I choose my path, no one else.” His smile never left his freckled face.
Izuku's words hurt Katsuki more then he would've admit. He gripped his chest where his aching heart sat and was now fuming with rage. “See that's what I was talking about! Which hero would tell someone to jump from a roof and kill himself? I'm no better then those cruel villains that are running around and kill all those people just for fun! God dammit Deku! I told you to kill yourself if that doesn't make me a villain then what else?! How can you be so chill about all this shit?” His face was red, tears pricked in the corner of his eyes as he jumped to his feet and was now towering over the small green haired boy. His figure was shaking with rage. He couldn't believe that after all those years that shitty nerd was still so positive and even tried to support him during his crisis.
Izuku stood up as well, walking closer to the fuming blond and held his passionate gaze. Although he was a few inches smaller he stood his ground. He wouldn't let Katsuki face this alone. Although the blond was horrible to him, he knew that he would make a good hero some day if he had the time.
“Don't think too much about it Kacchan. Like I said, you can't hold on too much on your past. Let it help you in becoming a better hero. If I was able to forgive you for your wrong doings, then you should do too.”
Katsuki rose his lowered head and looked directly into the smiling face of Midoriya Izuku. What was wrong with this boy? “How can you forgive me for all this shit!?” He pushed the green eyed boy away from his personal bubble and took a few steps back to make some room between them. “I don't even need your fucking forgiveness! So don't act all high and mighty you useless shit!” Katsuki growled out in frustration. He was so confused! He could feel his palm heating up, ready to strike as he was once again taken aback by Deku's behaviour.
Instead of looking scared or intimated, Midoriya just smiled at him, his scarred hand once again on Katsuki's shoulder as he came closer once again and slightly leaned into the blond's ear.
“I know Kacchan.” His voice was barely above a whsiper.
Izuku gave the taller teen a small peck on his cheek and walked away, taking him by surprise. He left the blond boy alone with his thoughts as he headed towards his home.
Katsuki stood there for a few minutes before he snapped out of his stupor. “What the fuck? Deku you idiot come back here!” He angrily hollered but the smaller boy left a long time ago.
