The first time Yuga meets Midoriya, there’s nothing exciting about the other boy at all. In fact, he seems completely hopeless, and the only reason Yuga rescues him in the first place is because he’s in the way, because the robot attacking the helpless boy makes for a good target. He doesn’t know at the time that it makes him look better, but, really , he doesn’t think he needs all that much help looking good to begin with.
Later, when he sees the way Midoriya destroys himself trying to save somebody else, all he can think about is how utterly disgusting such a Quirk looks, and he counts himself lucky that he has something as beautiful as he is- and he ignores any nagging thoughts reminding him that he’s come close to destroying himself a few times in the past. He won’t be seeing Midoriya again, he’s certain of it, and he can forget just how cool he looked for that split second before he began to unravel.
It comes as no surprise when Yuga is accepted to UA, though it is surprising to see Midoriya there that first day. He decides that he might be worth keeping an eye on after all, despite how plain and unglamorous he is, because there still might be something exciting about him that Yuga’s missed.
In fact, it seems that everyone has their eye on Midoriya in one way or another, as he begins to show everyone just how eye-catching he can be, regardless of what his appearance may suggest. He’s plain, but he’s dazzling in his own way, and always manages to command attention even when he doesn’t seem to be trying at all, something Yuga grows jealous of.
But his jealousy only further encourages him to try to stick closer to Midoriya’s side. Theiy’re classmates, yes, but if they could be closer he could begin to understand what makes him so exciting. His infatuation with him grows to the point that of course he can’t refer to it as anything other than an infatuation.
Yuga can’t help but be taken in by the way Midoriya manages to stand out in every way, but also manages to fit into his group easily, to be a part of everyone else. He isn’t any different from the rest of them, when Yuga gets to the root of it, and he fits in- in a way that Yuga doesn’t know if he ever could. There are drawbacks to standing out, he supposes, and there are even more drawbacks to being overlooked, and somehow Midoriya strikes that perfect balance that is simply dazzling , and even though he tries to think of another word for it, he can’t.
And so, he begins admiring a boy who should, by all accounts, be far too plain for someone as glamorous as him. Yuga certainly did not expect his first crush to go like this, but, at the very least, there is one thing about it that he had hoped for. He always thought that if he liked someone, he would not have to work hard to get them to notice him; even though he might have that problem with others now, Midoriya is the type to notice anyone, and doesn’t seem to have any problem sharing his attention.
Now, the only problem is how to get Midoriya to pay special attention to him, and how to learn from the time they spend together, so that Yuga can fully come to understand what’s so exciting, what’s so dazzling about Midoriya.
