Work Text:

Akutagawa turns over and blindly reaches out to touch Atsushi only to realise that his boyfriend isn’t in bed anymore. He groans as he sits up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He walks over to the window and peeks out the curtain – the sun has barely risen. He’s sure that Atsushi doesn't have anything planned so why is his boyfriend up so early when he usually spends his free days sleeping till noon?

It’s only then that Akutagawa spots the day on the calendar.

Oh.

It has been precisely four years since Dazai and Chuuya had broken up and disappeared from their lives.

Honestly, Akutagawa thinks it’s kind of silly that Atsushi is still so affected by it. But – a soft smile graces his lips – that's just the way Atsushi is.

Akutagawa grabs the extra blanket from the closet before he heads to the living room. As expected, he finds Atsushi sitting by the window, a mug of coffee in hand. He already knows that it’s caramel latter even without looking.

Atsushi jumps slightly when Akutagawa dumps the blanket over him but then a gentle smile envelopes his face when he sees his boyfriend.

“Ryuu!”

“Stupid Jinko,” Akutagawa grouses as he takes a seat next to Atsushi and grabs his hands, rolling his eyes when he feels how cold they are. “You forgot to turn the heater on again.”

Atsushi blinks and he turns to look at the heater and realises that Akutagawa had already turned it on for him.

“Thanks, Ryuu,” Atsushi says softly. “You're always taking care of me.”

Akutagawa scoffs but he can’t deny the way his heart flutters at hearing that.

Atsushi sighs and turns to look back out the window. The streets are empty yet Atsushi looks as if he’s looking at someone. Some couple.

“Do you think they’re happy, Ryuu?”

Akutagawa shrugs. Perhaps he’d lie and say that sure, he thinks they’re happy regardless of whom they’re with, if he were someone else. As it is, he doesn't have anything to say.

“Maybe,” is the best he can offer.

“I hope they are,” Atsushi replies. “I hope… I hope that we can be as happy as them too when they were together.”

Akutagawa’s mind immediately drifts to a box that’s lying hidden in the drawer. Atsushi smiles and that’s it. He gets up and goes to retrieve the box, ignoring Atsushi’s questions. When he returns, he all but tosses the box at Atsushi who only just manages to catch it. His mouth falls open when he realises what it is.

“Ryuu – ”

“We’ll be happier,” Akutagawa interrupts and his face is already red. “We’ll be the happiest.”

Atsushi throws his head back and laughs before he smiles at him. “Yes.”

“What?”

Atsushi holds up the box and shoots him a pointed look. Akutagawa’s eyes widen.

“Oh… oh…”

Atsushi laughs again as he hugs Akutagawa tight, and he feels like this happiness can never be destroyed as he feels Akutagawa wraps his arms around him.
