Work Text:

Dancing in Denki’s dorm room, carefree and happy. It’s the day before graduation, and neither of them are too worried about the ceremony. There are bigger things to stress over, like actual villains and bodily harm. For now, all they have to think about is the sweet little song playing from Denki’s phone and getting his bags down to his mom’s car when she arrives.

“Can you take this babe to be your only?
And this babe to be your only?
Let's get married.”

Sero feels like this song is sort of calling him out. He's had the idea for a while now. Marrying Denki is the plan, because he knows this mess of a man is the one. The person he wants day in and day out. Even when he's fried his brain and stumbles about like an infant, or breaks the rice cooker, or does nothing but quote Vines to win an argument.

"I wish it was next week already. We'll be in the apartment and won't have to worry so much." Sero mentions, burying his head in the crook of his boyfriend's neck. He smells like lemon. "It'll be here soon babe. And then we can do whatever we want. Sorta." They sway, enjoying the warmth that the spring sun allows through the windows.

In the pocket of his cargo pants, Sero feels the weight of the box carrying a very special ring. He bought it three months ago and has been plotting the perfect moment to pop the question. Maybe now?

Denki's going home tonight to get some well-deserved rest before the graduation ceremony. Sleep will be a rare commodity once they are sidekicks.

The room is bare, with the last of his clothes packed into duffel bags which sit on the mattress he's used for almost 3 years. "Honey, I want to ask you something..." Sero's voice comes out low and soft. Those golden eyes stare at him, interest brimming in them.

"What's up?" he says, so casual, like his life isn't about to take a dramatic change. Sero's left hand moves to the pocket in question, but before he can do so, Denki's phone rings. "Mom? Oh, so you're here. Alright, chill, I'll be there."

Sero stops his course of action. Now's not the time. They've got to get him packed in Ayane's sedan. That would be Denki's mom. "Mom's here. Gotta get going!". Sero gives him a smile, moving to pick up two of the bags.

As they take the elevator down, Denki reminds him, leaning in to kiss his cheek. "You wanted to ask me something?". Sero blushes, knowing that he can do something far better tomorrow. "Oh, it's nothing. I'll text you about it later." There's suspicion in the other's eyes, trying to search for the question, like he can find it there. "Alright! You know where I be." Denki quips, and all is mostly forgotten.

Out at his mother's car, they share a kiss. It's just like their first. Honey sweet and slow motion. Ayane teases her son a bit over him being so lovesick. "Look at you, getting all sappy and soft. You'll be the first hero couple who gets posted on the news." She's a sweet woman, with a snappy sense of humor. Sero retorts, "Nah! Bakugou and Kirishima probably have that on lock."

The moment is cut short when Ayane receives a phone call. Denki's brother wants to take the new graduate out for dinner. "Seems that my chariot awaits!", he's beaming with excitement. Denki and his brother are close. Having dinner with him will be nice.

They share another chaste kiss. With his hair pushed back in that white head band and wearing his old skinny jeans with the rip in the butt pocket, he looks young and fresh. Sero loves when he dresses like this because it's so honest. It makes him beautiful. "Tomorrow we're gonna be moving on!" Sero whispers excitedly.

"God we're old." Denki jokes. He always says that.

Sero does feel at the ring box in his pants pocket when the car pulls away. Soon, his inner voice whispers. He's got to stick with his plan.

~~~~~~~~~~~
About three months ago, Sero had finally saved enough money from his internship to buy the engagement ring. He kept it a secret. Scurrying down the hallway with the small wooden box concealed in his palms, he is under the impression no one sees him. He's wrong. Tooru does and scares the piss out of him later that night by shouting "What's in the box!". He doesn't say.
He finds Mina and Kirishima in the kitchen, halfway through touching up the redhead's hair. With a quick wave, he grabs their attention. "What'cha got there Smeagol? The One True Ring?" Mina teases, eyes narrowing. Kirishima takes a moment to look up from his DS and immediately gawks, seeing the tiny box in his friend's hand. "No fucking way. No way bro." Sero nods. "Yeah way bro."
The ring is a simple gold band adorned with alexandrite and ruby, his and Denki's birthstones. "It's amazing Sero. He's going to lose his mind when he sees it."  Mina whispers, knowing that Denki could be lurking and secrecy was of the essence. Over Sero's shoulder, Bakugou came drifting in. "As if he had much of a mind to begin with. You finally gonna ask him to be lawfully wedded?". The blond has one of his hands shoved into his pants pocket, the other loose so he could reach out to Kirishima's shoulder and squeeze it softly. Sero can see them doing the great walk down the aisle too. He just knows that Denki and he will be first.
"Oh hush. And yeah, I'm planning on it. This is just the first piece." He offers. Once his three friends are settled into chairs and Mina has gotten back to Kirishima's dye job, he runs through his proposal speech. He's not usually so long-winded. About thirty minutes later, and two more snarky comments from Bakugou, he feels like he's ready.
When it comes to Denki, he's never been more certain.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dinner with his family was dope and all, but Denki is beat. The problem is tonight that sleep is intermittent. He passed out around 8:00pm from a full stomach and subsequently finds himself awake again around 2:30am. He now had himself holed up in his bed, phone next to him and fiddling around with his Nintendo Switch.

His mind wanders to Sero's question yesterday noon. What did he want to ask? From the way his eyebrows had drawn together and his eyes had shown shiny with want, the question had to be pretty important. His mind wandered through the possibilities. Could it be about the apartment? Maybe he was worried about moving in together? Was it about working together? Was it...something else? Maybe even...the big question. Denki slunk down in his blankets. He blows out a bit of air and stares at his ceiling for a bit, hoping rest will take over again soon. He really needs to be coherent for tomorrow.

He thinks he hears someone outside. Maybe one of the neighbors is outside having a smoke. It's not completely impossible. Some time passes and he goes back to Super Smash Bros. Maybe he'll keep playing until he passes out. He looks at the spring suit his mother hung up for him after he'd fallen asleep. It's a tan number that he knows Sero has a bit of a Thing about capital T. That'll be a positive he can look forward to.

At 3:00am, his phone buzzes.

Sero [3:00am]: hey are you up?
Denki [3:01am]: yeah lol wassup
Sero [3:02am]: come outside on your balcony
Denki [3:03am]: bro wtf

He swings his legs out of bed. The balcony of his family's apartment is attached to his room. It used to be his brother's but after he moved out, Denki took over. When he gets outside, the sight that he's met with stuns him.

Sero, hanging by his tape, from his upstairs neighbor's balcony. It's such a lovely surprise. He knows his face crinkles into a sleepy grin. His boyfriend is pulling a goddamn Spiderman. Denki only has to lean forward a little bit over his balcony railing to catch the other man in a kiss. This one is deep, and Sero pokes his tongue at Denki's lips. They tangle and Sero has to break their makeout session to swing himself onto his boyfriend's balcony.

"Not that I don't totally love this, but why are you here at 3:00am? We're graduating in like...12 hours?" he asks, rubbing his eyes a little. Sero is regarding him with that same look from earlier the previous day. His lips are pulled into a gentle grin.

"I couldn't wait." He whispers this, and then the scene takes on a whole new thrumming energy. Denki watches as his dearest bends at the knee. "Holy shit."

"Kaminari Denki, you're the biggest fool I know. Everyone told me it was impossible to ask you out because you were oblivious to fuckin' everything. But I waited, and waited, and then sent you a million memes. The past two years have been made better for me because I shared them with you." Out of his sweatpants pocket, he pulls a small box. Denki nearly shrieks. "For real?" he whispers.

"For real," Sero continues, very clearly crying then. When he opens the box, the gold and red stones in it glitter underneath the moonlight. Their birthstones. It's all too much, and the lightning-Quirked boy kneels down because he's too weak to stand. "Let's get married. I know we're young, I know that, but it's you that I want. Forever and ever. Even if you break a million rice cookers and turn into an egghead when you overuse your Quirk."

Denki kisses the tears right off his lover's face, knowing that nothing could top this. "Yes! A million times yes."

Even though it's late and Sero has to get back to the school before Aizawa figures out he disappeared, he's not too worried. Looking at the glinting ring on his boyfriend's finger, he's more confident that he ever has been. They've got all the time in the world.
