Puppy Dog Eyes

Summary:

Hizashi chats to Shouta after the latter gets home late.

Sentence 1: “I’m as much of a master at martial arts as I am the puppy-dog pout.”

Work Text:

When Shouta returns home after a very long night time patrol, he is pounced on by Hizashi.

“Hey, Shouta!” he says, yelling the first word in English, his arms flapping as he pulls Shouta into a tight hug. He kisses Shouta on the cheek and then helps him take off his coat. “How was your patrol?”

Shouta shrugs, wanting to curl up in bed and sleep for hours. “All right, I suppose. How was the radio show?”

“Awesome! I missed you though.”

Shouta says nothing.

“Uh, Shouta, that’s when you’re supposed to say ‘I missed you too’,” Hizashi says.

Yawning, Shouta mumbles, “I missed you too,” in the flattest tone possible.

Hizashi grins and hugs him again. “Aww, how sweet!”

As Shouta goes through his routine to get ready for bed, Hizashi follows him, babbling about work and anything he can think of.

“So, I was thinking, do you want to go out for a meal tomorrow night? My treat?”

He smiles. Shouta looks up from washing his face and says, “Sorry, but I’m afraid I can’t make it tomorrow.”

And Hizashi just stares at him, looking rather upset. His eyes seem so wide and his bottom lip twitches, and as his hands wring together, Shouta wonders if his husband might burst into tears.

“Really?” Hizashi says.

And then Shouta feels bad and says, “I was only joking, ‘Zashi, of course we can go out.”

He hugs Hizashi, and when they pull away, Hizashi smiles too.

“You weren’t the only one joking, Shouta. I’m as much of a master at martial arts as I am the puppy-dog pout.” And as he says it, he swings his arms like he’s practising Judo (which he hasn’t done since they were teenagers).

Shouta rolls his eyes. “Honestly.”

And Hizashi laughs and kisses him.
