Let's do a little spin on PotC, shall we? (former) Commodore Javert, anyone? And the wily former captain of the Royal Navy turned seafaring rogue Jean Valjean?
Bonus points for Javert taking a job aboard a less-than-legal ship as a last ditch attempt to put some money in his pocket (to be spent on drink), finally succumbing to the ever-present urge to end his disgrace, tossing himself overboard during a storm, and regaining consciousness back aboard the ship, only for the first thing he sees to be Valjean tending to him (because he was aboard the ship as well, don't you know, and happened to see the former commodore make a rather rash decision and decided to do something about it).
Double bonus points for the two of them looking out for each other during skirmishes like proper badasses.

So here he is, purchase already made and walking towards the docks where Shanks had promised he’d be discreetly waiting. Considering that Benn isn’t there to remind Shanks of what ‘discreet’ means, Buggy is half expecting a firing squad.

“Children, I am feeling a bit abandoned here. I was in the middle of being threatened?”

He almost steps out of the bushes without checking. Almost. But he knows he is a liar and he learned a long time ago to question the tales he tells to himself.

Zoro shakes his head. “Only the cook knew what I was talking about.” Hardly surprising. “And he laughed, at least until Perona sent a ghost to make his acquaintance. Then he wept. And he said that the All Blue is an impossible Sea.”
Sanji sighs, it’s nothing he hasn’t heard before but still, it is pretty disappointing.
“So I think it’s in the New World,” Zoro continues. “I mean, Mihawk says that that’s a crazy sea, far worse than the first part of the Grandline is. So it makes sense right?”

“But you said you were there for weeks!” she reminds him. Like he needs any reminder. “How did he survive then? If he didn’t take any of the food?”
“Zeff used to have two legs.”
Nami gasps and Sanji is selfishly glad for it. It means she gets it. It means he won’t have to say it outloud.

But no, Usopp’s always known what Buggy was. And he’s always idolized him.

Nami sticks her tongue out at her sister but does as she is told. After all, Nojiko is right, like she usually is.

“Why is he training you?”
“He wants us to be marines,” Luffy says with a wince.
“No, he wants you to be a marine,” Ace corrects with pride. “He has already given up on me and Sabo.”
“But he’s still training you,” Usopp points out.
“Yeah, but only because he doesn’t want to have to kill me.”

They are being kind and Nami wants to argue. Wants to tell them that she can just wear the dress and they should stop being so stupid. That she doesn't need their concern or consideration. But she cannot wear the dress, can she?
