Chapter Text
"Well, I can't argue with that! So I'll have to change the subject a little bit... Please, tell us about your personal life here in Japan! Do you enjoy the culture, compared to American culture?" Before you could answer, she'd asked another question: "Do you enjoy your job? You're a teacher at U.A., it must be stressful to teach the next generation of heroes. Have you found yourself a boyfriend or girlfriend?" She finally stopped speaking, clearly hoping you would only answer the last question. You narrowed your eyes at her slightly, annoyed. The others - save Soothsayer - had been asked about villains they fought and other heroes they'd met. You and Soothsayer, however, had now been asked, almost immediately, about your personal lives.
"You asked the others about their work as professional heroes. But you want to know about my personal life. Ms. Yui, to be quite frank with you-"
"Please, call me Ito!"
"Ms. Yui. My personal life is none of your business. I like Japanese culture, or I wouldn't have stayed. I like teaching the students at U.A., or I wouldn't have agreed to a full year after my first few months." You leaned back in your chair, crossing your arms. The woman was clearly stunned by the bluntness of your response.
"I was just... trying to get a better understanding of you-"
"Ms. Ito. You asked Dragontooth about his first villain fight as a pro hero. You didn't ask him about his husband. You asked Heavenly Owl if he'd ever teamed up with Captain Celebrity, but didn't bother him about the engagement ring that wasn't on his finger during his last interview. You say you want to get a better understanding of us, but when Soothsayer started to describe her quirk in better detail, you asked Gray Savior to explain his, instead." Dragontooth cleared his throat, looking at the ground awkwardly. Gray Savior was playing with the engagement ring you'd mentioned, twisting it on his finger and blushing slightly. Gray Savior stared at you with open fear and confusion - and Soothsayer was giving Yui the exact same disappointed look you were.
"I'm afraid I don't understand what you're getting at, Silver," Yui said, a mixture of panic and annoyance in her face. You grimaced, but Soothsayer answered instead.
"I believe what my friend Silver is trying to say, is that you have treated the two of us differently than the other heroes sitting here. Where you focus your attention on what defines the other three as heroes, you've focused entirely on our personal relationships, or our fashion sense. Your next question for Silver was-" she paused, her entire body fading as if she were turning invisible for a moment. She resolidified and continued as if nothing had happened "-and I quote, 'Where did you get the inspiration for your newest hero costume?', a question that you did not ask Dragontooth, Gray Savior, or myself."
"I'm not sure what questions you want me to ask, exactly," Yui sat stiffly in her chair, every line of her body showing her annoyance. Apparently, no one had called her out like this before. Scratching the side of your nose, you thought for a moment before leaning around Heavenly Owl and Dragontooth to look directly at Soothsayer. She'd turned your way, as well, a knowing smile on her lips.
"Soothsayer," you said in your most insulting impression of a reporter's voice, "what made you decide to be a professional hero?"
"That's a wonderful question, Silver, thank you. I have to admit, however, that I did not choose this profession. The very first time I experienced the Other - my quirk, you see - i was struck with a vision of myself, defending the weak as a professional hero. I did not choose to be a professional hero: fate ordered me to be one."
"Thank you, Soothsayer," you said, reminding yourself that this overdramatic nonsense was part of the character she played. Sitting back, you turned your attention back to Yui. "Questions like that, Ms. Yui. And one other thing, before we get too far off-topic: there is absolutely no justification for asking someone about their significant others. I used Dragontooth and Heavenly Owl as examples, but really - why on earth would you ask someone who risks their lives on a daily basis to risk their significant other by telling you about them on national television? Every one of the heroes in this room has enemies, Ms. Ito. Telling them about our lovers is handing them our weaknesses in a glittery bow."
"I-uh-" Ms. Ito was saved by a commercial break and the arrival of the final guest. Turning, you saw All Might standing to the side of the stage, grinning at you. You felt a tiny blush spread over your cheeks when you saw the pride in his eyes.
