Chapter Text
19 BBY
Mace fell backwards.
He fell out and through the window of the Chancellor’s Office.
He grasped at his chest, where Anakin’s ‘saber had burned from one shoulder to opposite hip.
If he had been any closer, he would have been sliced in two.
Instead, he choked on blood as part of his ribs came free of the rest and dug into flesh and muscle.
He reached out desperately for the Force, to stabilize his ribs even as he released his pain.
He reached out and tried to catch himself on something as he fell level after level, past tens of vehicles of all sorts.
He passed out as his ears popped, not knowing if he had managed to redirect himself to land and accepting of that and the surety of his death, even as he found himself reaching out for his former Padawan one last time and wanting to know she was alive but unsure if it was nothing more than desperate hope.

Mace came to in starts and bursts, in excruciating pain and in incomparable sorrow.
He would wake and reach out to the Force, trying to heal anything of his wound as he also reached out for any Jedi to be found and brought back to the Temple. The pain was beyond anything he’d ever felt, along every inch of his body and if he screamed, it was hoarse and with blood bubbling out from behind his lips. It was nothing to how he felt thousands of Jedi die, watching as a shatterpoint as large as Coruscant broke and crumbled and his whole universe went with it.
Tears ran down his face as he felt so many friends abruptly fade from his mind.
He sobbed when Depa died, when she reached out one last time and whispered <<Goodbye, my Master. Take care of Caleb for me.>>
He reached out with energy he didn’t have to spare and tried to give everything he had to her, to help her survive. It wasn’t enough as their pair-bond shattered and the last he felt of her was a whisper of her reaching out to her Padawan <<I’m proud of you, Caleb. Survive.>>
He couldn’t stop crying even as he passed out again, not caring if he was found and killed when he felt every light he’d known go out.
