Insult

Summary:

Miles gets sick of Raymond’s comments about his choice of job.

Work Text:

Even years after they bumped into each other at that crime scene, Miles knows Raymond still can’t accept that Gregory’s son is a prosecutor. He doesn’t make irritating comments so much these days, but Miles can just tell… Raymond doesn’t like his choice of job.

And Miles can understand why Raymond feels this way. Raymond utterly adored Miles’ father, and it broke him when Gregory died. So to learn that Miles was taken in and manipulated by von Karma hurt him, and Raymond clearly feels like Miles is… offending Gregory’s memory.

But that is where Raymond’s argument starts to annoy him. Because Manfred von Karma manipulated him and his actions as a prosecutor in the early years of his career weren’t the most ethical, but he has changed. Just like Wright, he fights to find the truth in court, from the other side of the courtroom. And it is an utter insult to pretend Gregory would hate to see him standing behind the other bench in court.

So one day, he brings the topic up. When he and Raymond play chess in Miles’ office, Raymond makes an off-handed comment about how Gregory loved chess, and, “He’d have loved you to follow in his footsteps, Miles.”

“That’s enough, Raymond,” Miles says, staring at his partner. “I love you and I appreciate how much you idolised my father, but please stop with these comments. I did follow in his footsteps; just like my father, I stand in court and find the truth. What badge I wear is irrelevant. Please, when you say things like this it is an insult to myself and my father’s memory.”

Raymond stares at him. “I’m sorry, Miles.”

Miles reaches across the table and squeezes Raymond’s hand. “Just don’t do it again, all right?”

Raymond smiles slightly. “Okay.”
