Work Text:
It was another boring day in UA High. Despite the open windows and the AC, the sweltering heat didn’t seem to want to leave. Everyone had ditched their uniform jackets. Mr. Cementoss was droning on about some famous writer, Sero didn’t bother to remember his name. He glanced around him. Mina had fallen asleep, snoring lightly on her desk. Jirou had her earbuds in, loud enough for Sero to faintly hear some electric guitar. He could see Kaminari doodling something, but he wasn’t close enough to see what it could be. Either Cementoss noticed none of this, or he did and just didn’t care enough to scold them.
Behind Sero, Tokoyami had got out a small fan and held it up to his face. Poor Tokoyami, Sero thought. He must be burning up under those feathers. It was at times like these, he was envious of Todoroki, who could just regulate his body temperature.
Sero was snapped out of his slump by the bell ringing, signalling that it was time to move on to the next class, that was likely to be just as hot. He cracked his back and stood up, gathering his things.
“Sero, wait!” Midoriya said. “My pencil broke, do you have an extra?”
“Yeah, sure,” Sero said, digging around in his bag. “Here.” He tossed the pen to Midoriya.
Midoriya’s eyes widened, and he suddenly did a backflip, avoiding the pen entirely. It clattered to the floor. The room was silent, all eyes on Midoriya. A second later, he seemed to realize what he had done. His freckled face flushed pink.
“Uh, sorry!” he apologized. “I guess my reflexes just kicked in. I didn’t expect you to throw it, and I just saw a small object coming towards me…” he trailed off.
“Well,” said Cementoss, looking utterly unimpressed. “You certainly managed to dodge that pen quickly. If only you used those skills in combat training.”
Midoriya’s face went even redder. “S-sorry, sir.”
And just like that, the moment was over, and everyone fell back into their monotonous, sultry daze. But Sero had decided that if he ever wanted to prank Midoriya, he’d have to account for those reflexes.
“Look, man,” Kaminari tapped Sero on the shoulder. He held up his crude drawing. “It’s Mr. Cementoss,” he said. Kaminari had drawn a speech bubble coming from their teacher’s mouth. He was apparently saying “blah, blah, blah”.
“Nice.”
