I Love Being With You

Summary:

The explanation was actually really simple: Yaoyorozu liked him and he made her smile. In return, he also liked her and she made him strive to do his best.

Notes:

This work was made for the Unexpected Duos, a BNHA Rarepair Exchange. It was my first time being part in a fandom event like this and it was so much fun!

I must admit that at first I thought of another plot, but then I realized that it'd take too long for me to write it out :'D So I went with something shorter, and I have to admit that it ended up being incredibly fluffy. I always thought that Momo and Denki are super cute together and I ended up shipping them even more after writing this fic kshdaksd This was also a fun way for me to challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone and write more with the kids instead of my usual villain focused works.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

He takes her to the park in their first date. It’s something simple and cute; she shows up with a frilly dress that screams expensive, while he goes with simple clothes that his parents bought because they were on sale.

People stare at them sometimes, and Kaminari can’t really say if it’s because they know they’re from UA’s hero course or because he’s going out with a rich girl - maybe a mix of both. Either way, he doesn’t mind, especially when Yaoyorozu buys him ice cream as a treat, when they stop to play with dogs or when they share a piece of bread, throwing small crumbles to the fish.

They smile and have fun, so much that it surprises them when the sky starts to get dark. They both rush to the station, only stopping to laugh at themselves once they’re both inside the train that takes them back to school. At least, according to Yaoyorozu’s calculations, they’re going to make their way back to the dorms in time to avoid Aizawa’s scolding.

There’s even enough time for them to kiss before getting on the dorms. Yaoyorozu stops him before they enter, putting her hands on his shoulders as she leans him, taking the initiative. It catches him by surprise, but it’s by no means something unwelcome; soon he finds himself relaxing, almost melting at her soft touch combined with what remains of her perfume, as he closes his eyes and kisses her back.

Her dark eyes are shining and she looks splendid when he leans back to take a good look at her face. Yaoyorozu’s gorgeous and it takes him some time to actually process what happened: she asked him out, he took her on a date, they had lots of fun together and they even kissed.

It was perfect, and far better than his own awkward teenage dreams. Everything felt incredibly natural, and the boy felt free to be himself around her, making bad puns and jokes about literature. It’s clear that Yaoyorozu had the same opinion as him, and Kaminari would be lying if he said that he wanted to get to know more and more about her.

The girl smiles, reaching out to hold his hand. She gives it a gentle squeeze, not minding the fact that they’re both tired and a tad sweaty from dashing to the station.

“Can you teach me how to skateboard?” she asks, and the question, while unexpected, makes it clear that she wants to go out with him again soon. This is enough to make his heart almost explode in sheer joy, and he can’t contain the smile on his own face.

He nods and kisses her once again, on the cheek this time. Of course he can!

In their next date, Kaminari decides to teach her how to skateboard. Yaoyorozu not only shows up with a brand new board - definitely bought just a few days ago, with her parents endless fountain of money - but is also quick to balance herself on the skate, much to Kaminari’s amusement.

Her hair’s also done differently this time. Instead of the usual ponytail, Yaoyorozu decided to braid it. Still, there’s a part of her fringe that rebels itself and stands out on its own, adding some extra charm. It looks great on her and he definitely wants to braid her hair himself next time.

Kaminari does his best to teach her how to jump and do some simple tricks, always making sure to stand by her side not because he’s afraid she’ll hurt herself just by skating, but rather because he doesn’t want her to try anything incredibly dangerous - not that he’s the best example when it comes to that, but he wants to make up for the times he tried to do something far too risky and failed.

Once they’re done skating - with no accidents - Yaoyorozu suggests that they should have a go at the arcade. Kaminari told her about some games he likes over the week and she really wants to play with him. She’s clearly excited and not as tired as he thought she’d be, and watching her eyes glow once she sees the different game machines makes Kaminari chest get warm and fuzzy.

The feeling doesn’t last long enough, because soon she’s walking around holding his hand, guiding him to one of the machines. From there, their gaming marathon begins: they challenge each other on rhythm games, she gets a high score in one of the shooters, and he gets some big wins in one of the fighting games.

They try to grab a plushie in the prize machine before leaving, but end up deciding that it’s way easier to just buy one from a store after wasting fifteen minutes trying to make it work.

Thankfully, they do happen to pass by a store when they’re going back to the dorms. They’re selling Pokémon plushies and it’s only fair for them to pick one for each other. She chooses a Pikachu for him for very obvious reasons, while he goes with Eevee for her because he can’t truly pick one evolution and to be fair, he thinks that it really goes well with how powerful and versatile her quirk can be.

“I never thought you’d be good at shooters, Yaoyorozu,” he comments once they leave the store, Pikachu plushie in hand. He squeezes it, keeping it close to his chest. Yaoyorozu can’t help but him to be really cute like this, and she has to admit that the plushie really helps when it comes to making him look so lovely.

The girl smiles at him, playfully pinching his cheek just so she could kiss it afterwards. They smile at each other before she opens her mouth to speak again.

“Me neither,” she replies with a small giggle, making her plushie kiss Kaminari’s nose. “I guess that was… Shocking even for you, right?”

Kaminari can’t believe that she’s starting to catch on his ridiculous puns - not only that, but she also made one based on his own quirk. It’s cheesy, but the situation is so adorable and unexpected at the same time, that the only thing Kaminari can do is not laugh, but outright snort.

She laughs along with him as they walk together, not minding the people that recognize them from the sports festival this time.

It doesn’t take too long for Kaminari to discover that one of the biggest perks from dating Yaoyorozu was the fact that she was not only willing to be his private tutor, but also that she told him he’d get a special reward from her if he did well in the next exam. Needless to say, this was more than enough incentive for him to study extra hard so he could impress her, and Yaoyorozu congratulated him and told him that they’d go on a special date next night.

Much to his surprise, she takes him to an opera and Kaminari cries not a river, but an entire ocean. She pats him back as he gently sobs in amazement, completely engaged in the story, musics, outfits - everything. It’s something different from what he usually does, something he always wanted to do too, and he’s so, so thankful.

It’s actually incredibly sweet, and Yaoyorozu tells him that they can see as many operas as he wants, as long as he keeps up with his studies. This, of course, serves as some very effective incentive, and Yaoyorozu would soon end up finding out that her boyfriend cries at pretty much every opera - and sometimes, even in some concerts.

Sometimes, Kaminari can’t believe that he’s really this lucky. Yaoyorozu is definitely an amazing girlfriend, someone that makes him want to become a better person just to see her smile. She brings out the best out of him, believes in him, and he can’t really thank her enough for that.

“How did you even got her to date you?” Eijirou asks him one day during lunch. This is enough to prompt the other boys to stop and stare at him because of course they’re all asking this to themselves since day one.

Kaminari clears his throat and smiles. Finally, he managed to get his time to shine. The attention he’s getting and the purposeful suspense makes it seem like he did something extraordinary to date her, but in the end there’s no secret nor grand scheme. In fact, the answer is very simple and anyone that bothered to watch them interacting could figure it out.

“One: she likes me. Two: she finds me funny. The same goes for what I think of her, so we’re in very good terms,” he replies and takes another bite of his meal, doing his best not to snort at the other boy’s still shocked gazes.

There isn’t much for him to say besides that, however: in the end, it’s much simpler than solving a math problem.

It wasn't even about luck. Kaminari just had to be himself.
