Work Text:
In her life, there are a lot of things Izumi had learned.
Always ask and don't just take, if she asks there is a 90 percent chance of her getting what she wants, the other 10 percent is up to her bargaining skills and how her dad feels that particular day.
Don't ever try and imitate her dad's pro hero moves without supervision (and no, Hitoshi does not count.)
Don't go looking for trouble.
Try not to let trouble find her.
When trouble does inevitably find her, call her dad or run away screaming, drag Hitoshi with her if she must.
And if she has no other choice, kick trouble in the balls and then run away screaming, unless of course they are her size, in which case always go for the throat.
Somehow Izumi is almost positive all those things and more are not the appropriate reaction to high stress situations caused by changing schools, again.
And it's a private school, it's Soumei!
The uniform she wore was neat and pressed, a deep navy plated skirt that fell to her knee's and white knee high socks ended in shiny black loafers, she wore a blinding white blouse and a navy jacket over top, a white neck bow topping the outfit off.
Hitoshi stood beside her wearing navy slacks instead of a skirt (of courses) and had shiny white buttons on his Gakuran.
“Well, it's certainly big.” he said and she sucked in a deep breath and nodded.
They were early, both because Auntie Shouko had to drop them off early to go to work and because Izumi guessed that they might need the extra time to find their new class.
And from the sheer sizer of the building she had guessed right.
“do you think it'll.. be the same?” she asked softly.
In her old school she had been mocked and ridiculed because she didn't have a quirk, and then when she went to school with Hitoshi they had both been mocked and avoided, her because of her lack of power, and him because of his 'Villainous' quirk.
“I think we should expect the worse, that way if it does turn out the same we won't be disappointed.” the pessimistic and yet true words made her shoulders slump before she squared them again and stood up straight.
“Right! well we'll never find out here!” grabbing the purple haired boys hand she proceeded to drag him inside the building to his half hearted grumbling.
Inside the building was honestly a maze, with the building cut into two wings, one being the elementary school and the other being the junior high part.
They learned this when they wandered into the junior high one and a nice upperclassmen not only showed them where they were supposed to go, but even went a step further and walked them to their class.
With a chorus of thank you's and a bow they were left to the most terrifying part.
The actual introduction.
Izumi was nervous, would they like her? Would they like Hitoshi? What if everything was the same as their previous school?.
A careful nudge to her side had her glancing over and Hitoshi gave her a lazy yet reassuring smile.
“Hey, we're gonna be heroes right? This is nothing.” she stared at him a moment before letting out a breath and returning the smile.
Nodding her head once she raised her fist and politely knocked and after a moment the door slid open.
The man that stood there was fairly short, just a few inches taller then Izumi herself and wearing a dark suit and bright orange tie, his hair seemed to be shifting colors slowly and floated like waves.
“Oh, excellent timing, please come in.” with those words Izumi padded into the room with Hitoshi a half step behind her and she stared out at the class room and was struck with how different it was.
Unlike her previous schools it was so much more.. neater, clean in a way the previous one wasn't.
And the students were different too, they weren't rowdy and showing off their quirks, they weren't even using their quirks, they were straight backed like terracotta soldiers and the seriousness of the room was a bit intimidating.
“Class, these are your two new classmates I was just telling you about. Shinsou Hitoshi and Aizawa Izumi.”
at their names both she and Hitoshi gave a bow.
“Please take care of us.” they both said in time with each other before straightening.
“Alright, you both can take the two seats by Iida-san, Iida-san please- Ah thank you.” as if jolted a boy in the middle row had shot up, arm raised rigidly and luckily the seat beside him and just behind it were empty.
Locking eyes with Hitoshi she glanced at the seats and with a shrug the purple haired boy took the one behind her easily and with a soft sigh she took the one in front of him and beside the Iida boy.
They had always arranged it this way, that way no one could kick the back of her seat or try and slip gum into her hair once they.. once they found out.
It was something Hitoshi had started doing when they started getting older, most students to frightened to really mess with him and she had to admit she could always relax knowing her cousin was watching her back.
“Now we'll be going over a refresher course today to judge where everyone is at, I hope you all studied over summer vacation.” the man they quickly learned went by Tadashi-sensei wrote some things down on the board and Izumi pulled her note book out to get started.
Private school was... different.
It wasn't like it was difficult, Izumi had always found school not as stressful as her previous classmates had made it seem, both her and Hitoshi were able to finish the homework easily during lunch and if not by then, then by the time they both finished dinner.
Soumei however was on another level though, while the classes were structured differently they were also a tad more challenging but it was also..fun.
For once the answer wasn't obvious anymore and she found herself looking at the question and having to puzzle it out, she still finished faster then most but she wasn't the first one to finish, either.
During a brief break period where the teachers were changing she chanced a glance behind her and found Hitoshi actually awake and when they locked eyes his lips quirked faintly in a vague look that her father usually wore, like he had caught the canary and also gotten the cream, too.
When lunch finally rolled around she pulled out her bento and when she saw other students moving their desks to sit together she stood and Hitoshi was already standing.
“Hello!” the voice was jarring and she looked up to the boy she had sat beside this entire time, his blue hair and red eyes were striking but also oddly familiar before he bowed, arms held oddly at his sides.
“I am Iida Tenya, it's my honor to welcome you both to Soumei.”
she stared at the boy in shock because he spoke so oddly but he seemed earnest as well and she glanced at Hitoshi who shrugged, already shoving some hamburg into his mouth.
“Oh, uhm.. thank you? I'm Aizawa Izumi and this is my cousin, Shinsou Hitoshi, it's nice to meet you Iida-san.”
the boy stood and she marveled that he was already taller then both of them.
“Perhaps after school you would let me give you a tour of the school? I have heard it can be a bit confusing for new students.”
she was confused but there was a faint hope in her heart and a slight smile tugged her lips up.
“if you wouldn't mind, uhm.. do you... would you like to eat lunch with us, Iida-san?”
the boy looked surprised before a smile lit up his face and Izumi stared harder because it looked really familiar.
“I'd be honored.”
There were a lot of things Izumi found out about Iida-san during lunch and the tour of the school building.
One of which being he spoke with his body a lot, grand gestures and sweeping arm motions, his posture was always straight, almost rigid but he could also be somewhat silly when it came to rules, even going so far as to shout at a boy for running in the halls.
What fascinated Izumi the most though was the exhaust pipes coming out of the boys calves before it hit her, fist slamming into her palm.
“Ingenium!” she said suddenly and Hitoshi jerked to look around them while Iida-san swung around to stare at her.
“That's who you reminded me of! You know, the engine hero? He's been around a while and the exhaust pipes on your legs reminded me of it- here, give me a moment.” with those words she dug around in her bag before pulling a note book out.
'Hero Analysis for the Future #9' was written on the cover and she flipped through it until she got to the entry on Ingenium, the man himself sketched out with as much detail as she could manage and she moved to stand beside the tall boy to show him.
“He's really popular because of his personality, he knows how to handle people and calm them down during an emergency and has the most rescues of someone with twice as many years under their belt!, he focuses more on rescue then villain apprehension and just two days ago he teamed up with All Might to evacuate a mall when a villain with a poison gas quirk held it hostage!.” the talk of heroes was something that came as easily to her as breathing and Hitoshi stood beside her with an easy smile because even if he wasn't as 'Spazzy' as she was (his words, not hers.) he still liked heroes just as much as she did.
“Oh!” the boy beside them said in surprise and there was both pride and joy on his face and his smile was blinding.
“Yes I know him, he's my older brother actually!.” the words were said with so much happiness that for a moment Izumi didn't even register what he said.
And then his words finally hit and her eyes widened in surprise while Hitoshi's eyebrows nearly touched his hair line before squinting at the boy and humming.
“wonder how I missed that.” he muttered but the girl wasn't listening to him because this was cool! To know another person had a pro hero as a relative besides her and Hitoshi, though maybe it was more common in private schools? They did have added security, after all.
“I'm glad my brother has another fan, he is a wonderful hero.” the words were said with now recognized familial pride and Izumi hummed and nodded though Hitoshi patted her shoulder.
“Don't let her fool you, she's a fan of All heroes, and even if she is a fan of your brother another has already taken her heart.” the words were dramatic and her face flamed while her hand whipped around, smacking the purple haired boy upside the head with her notebook and he took it with good grace and a slightly maniacal grin.
“I was seven!” she hissed and he snickered and spied the confused look on the boys face.
“She had a crush on Pre-” the rest of his words were cut off as she slapped her hands over his mouth with wide eyes and flaming cheeks.
“You said you'd never tell!” the strangled voice hardly sounded like hers anymore and she shook the boy frantically.
The soft laugh from their new classmate had them both stopping and watching him curiously but he merely smiled.
And that's how they became friends with Iida-kun.
__
Of course it would eventually come out, their classmates grew curious and after a few days of relative peace it came time to bite the bullet.
“Ah.. well I'm actually Quirkless.” she said to her fellow classmates and the stunned silence that rippled through the crowd made her stomach twist.
“Quirkless? But.. you said you wanted to be a hero?” one girl said and there were a few murmurs.
“Yeah.” she nodded and wished Hitoshi would hurry back from the bathroom.
“How would you do that if you don't have a quirk?” a boy called from the back of the pack and her hands clenched into fists in her lap but she didn't allow her back to bow.
“Hard work, it's not like I expect it to be easy.” she shrugged but kept her head up, eyes locking with the boys until he looked away.
“Is that Cousin of yours quirkless, too?” she tried to find who said that before another voice spoke.
“And if I was?” with a slight shifting of the group of students Hitoshi made his way towards her and she stared at him with a raised eyebrow to which he shrugged, hand rubbing the back of his neck and he sighed.
“I'm not, if you're honestly wondering my quirks brainwashing.” he shrugged and waved a hand before he leaned against her seat, hand on the back of her chair and purple gaze locking on everyone who had crowded around her until they backed up a bit.
“So wait, mind control?.” the girl from before asked and Hitoshi nodded and Izumi's nails dug into her palms as uneasy mutters broke out.
When she heard a faint whisper of 'villain' she was about to stand up when another voice broke through.
“That's enough!” and like a typhoon Iida swept in, face pulled into a disapproving frown.
“What does it matter what or what not their quirks are? They are still your fellow students here and should be shown respect regardless, I find it admirable that both Aizawa-san and Shinsou-san aim to be heroes for it is a career fraught with dangers and peril! I would be honored to stand by their side when that day comes.”
the words struck her like a physical blow and Hitoshi looked no better.
When.
When that day comes.
As if he fully believed they would be heroes, like it was a given fact.
The only person who ever believed that was her dad and auntie, and Hizashi.
As soon as he had started his gestures and scolding words their classmates had tucked their proverbial tails and slunk away and Izumi felt tears burn her eyes.
“Really, you would expect better from them, are you both- Aizawa-san!”
The tears that came didn't hurt, in fact they made her feel lighter as she cried them.
It was nice to have someone believe in them and she wondered if this was what having a friend was like.
(it was a nice feeling, though she felt bad for frightening Iida-kun.)
