I was prepared mentally for the pain. It still came rushing in a stampede and throttled me, a stain of blood and shredded skin on the sidewalk. It is as if they need to counterbalance all the tender, gentle gestures and words with fits of sudden and enormous violence as if the softness grows to be too much, too great for them to bear, a craving for hurting and to be hurt in its wake. They do delight in wickedness, after all. Oh, to be able to worship the scars they leave on one another, to be able to caress and kiss the spoils of the wounds they inflicted, the mend the hearts they've broken. Wicked, lovely, obstinate men. Onwards to the patching of this whole mess.
