Chapter 1: Day One: Warmth

Chapter Text

Nothing about summertime had ever seemed appealing to Leone Abbacchio; everything about the season was infuriatingly annoying to him, from the insufferable heat to the amount of children running around to the abundance of mosquitoes and other pests. He sighed, lightly dabbing the sweat off his forehead with a napkin. Why had he agreed to come along today anyway?

“Leone, could you pass me the salt?”

Right, that right there, that had been why he came along on this horrible picnic. Bruno looked at him from where he sat across the table. “Yeah, sure,” he muttered out, picking up the salt shaker and placing it next to Bruno’s plate.

Bruno smiled at him then, and he could feel his cold heart melt under his gaze. “Thank you!” he exclaimed, his voice as melodious and sweet as ever. Leone nodded, quickly averting his gaze.

These feelings he had for the other man were definitely nothing new, nor a surprising at all. Bruno had, quite literally, saved Leone’s life, becoming synonymous to the light that shines over the Earth in the process. Everything about him made Leone’s heart beat faster in his chest and all of his insides feel warm and fuzzy; he made him feel things he’d never felt before, and that scared him.

None of the other people sitting with them at the table mattered, not when all of his attention was focused on Bruno. He watched on as Bruno took small bites of his sandwich, while listening to someone else speak.

“Leone, can you come with me for a second?” Bruno asked, head tilted to the side. Not waiting for a reply, Bruno walked off. Leone didn’t miss a single beat, following close behind.

Once Bruno stopped, just under the shade of a tree, Abbacchio spoke up again. “Is everything alright?”

Bruno nodded, turning to face him with a small smile on his lips. “You were staring again.” Leone felt his cheeks heat up at the comment, but, before he could speak, Bruno’s hand was on his cheek. “I’m sorry I dragged you along today. I just thought it might be lonely without you here.”

He wasn’t entirely sure what he should answer to that. None of his usual words would do right now. Should he say it was alright or should he apologize for staring? He should have been paying attention to their workmates, of that he was aware, but he couldn’t bring himself to. They were all so painfully boring and dull.

Lucky for him, a response didn’t seem to be necessary at that time, as Bruno leaned in close to press their lips together. Leone hesitantly wrapped his arms around Bruno’s waist, pulling him closer to himself. Their lips moved together in perfect sync, as they had so many other times before.
The warmth of Bruno’s body against his own was familiar and comforting. It made Leone’s heart ache for more of him. This was the only kind of warmth that Leone truly loved to feel.
