Work Text:
As midnight approaches, Kobayashi slumps backwards in her seat, struggling to keep her eyes open. She stretches her legs out under the kotatsu and leans her back against the couch, the show on the TV blurring into just a bunch of shapes that mean nothing to her. A cup of coffee sits in front of her, but she has forgotten to drink it. To put it simply, she is utterly exhausted.
When Tohru exits the bathroom (Kobayashi thinks she was cleaning it in that in-depth way she is so good at, but she honestly can’t remember), Kobayashi hears her sigh. She turns her head, and gets to see her dragon maid/dragon girlfriend shaking her head with a slightly exasperated expression on her face.
“What?” Kobayashi mumbles.
Tohru walks over, her tail swishing against the floor, and crouches down beside her. “Miss Kobayashi,” she says (because, despite Kobayashi’s suggestion that Tohru call her by her given name now they are dating, Tohru seems to love calling her Miss Kobayashi). “You look exhausted.”
Kobayashi chuckles, blinking slowly. “Must be the exhaustion.”
Tutting, Tohru wraps her in a hug and nuzzles her hair with her nose, and her voice comes out muffled as she says, “You work too hard.”
“I know.”
“You need more rest.”
“I know.”
Tohru kisses her hair, pulling back (and giving Kobayashi an unintended view of her large chest) to look at her. “Seriously, if you need to stop working so many hours, we can make by with less money. It doesn’t even have to be permanently. Just until you’re not sleep deprived like this.”
Kobayashi looks at Tohru with tired, aching eyes, and smiles. “I’ll seriously think about it. But… tomorrow.”
“That’s fine by me. Now, I insist you go to bed, Miss Kobayashi,” Tohru says, grinning.
“I thought you were my maid. Not my mother,” she mutters.
That makes Tohru laugh, but she soon shuts up, not wanting to wake up Kanna. Still, she grins broadly and says, “I know. But both have your best interests at heart. Now, go to bed.”
Even though she is fully prepared to go to bed, Kobayashi can’t resist the chance to bicker. “And what if I don’t want to?”
“Don’t forget that dragons are much stronger than humans,” Tohru says, fighting back laughter. “I’ll just pick you up if you don’t move.”
Kobayashi chuckles again, before yawning. “Okay, you win.”
With slow movements, Kobayashi gets up and gets ready for bed. In the bathroom, she brushes her teeth and uses the toilet, impressed by how clean it is in here. She wanders into the bedroom, where she gets into her pyjamas, deliberately avoiding looking at her body in the mirror (today has been a good day; she doesn’t want to ruin it by getting dysphoric), before slipping into bed.
Pulling off her glasses, Kobayashi lies down, pulling the blankets tight around herself. Within seconds, Tohru has joined her in bed, snuggling up to Kobayashi, and she hums contentedly.
“Finally, you’re in bed,” Tohru whispers.
“Yeah, yeah,” Kobayashi says, closing her eyes. “Now let me go to sleep.”
Tohru kisses her softly, lips tasting like toothpaste. “Good night, Miss Kobayashi. Sleep tight.”
Kobayashi smiles and burrows her face into Tohru’s neck. “Night.”
