Work Text:

In comparison to common belief, Oikawa Tooru’s first series of all-nighters did not happen because of a volleyball match. Yes, it was one of the reasons, but not the main one. They happened during his third year in Kitaichi when he was chosen to be the captain of the boys’ volleyball team. They had a practice match with Shiratorizawa on the first Monday right after their middle exam period of the year in July. So to be sure that he would not have to go to summer classes, he learned – day in and day out.

”You look like shit,” Iwaizumi said once they came out from their English test. He sent a side glance to his best friend, his eyebrows knitting in worry.

”You as just as blunt as always, Iwa-chan,” Oikawa said with a weak chuckle, but he could not deny the fact.

There were black circles under his eyes, his mood was not as lively as usual and he felt quite dizzy. However, he had worked a lot harder than that at some occasions in the past. Some stupid exam period would not stop him in reaching his goal. It was only two more days until Friday and their last exam – he would manage to do it. He looked up when he heard footsteps nearing and his expression turned into a scowl when he recognized the newcomers.

”Iwaizumi-san!” Kindaichi greeted Iwaizumi, waving with a smile on his face.

”Yo, brats!” Iwaizumi said, the corner of his lips turning upwards when the three first years reached them. ”How was the exam?”

”It was nothing special, really,” Kunimi mumbled, looking aside. That kid was the smartest of the three, so Oikawa could easily imagine that it was nothing special for him indeed.

”That is our Kunimi-chan!” Oikawa said with proud in his voice, then his gaze turned to the last first year and he smirked with malice. ”And what about you, Tobio-chan?” Kageyama fidgeted and lowered his gaze slightly - just as Oikawa thought.

”Well-” he started, but trailed off when he registered Oikawa’s looks in front of him. He blinked with his eyes wide. ”Oikawa-san, are you okay?” He asked, but because of the look Oikawa sent him, he stepped two steps back.

’Don’t you DARE pity me!’ From his reaction, Oikawa could see that the message was clear. He turned on his heels and started walking towards the stairs. When he reached the end of the corridor, he shot a glance back over his shoulder. ”I hope you will pass eventually!” He said to Tobio – thinking its total opposite.

Keeping up his façade was not as easily as he hoped it would be. Iwaizumi seemed to be more deceptive and Oikawa knew he started to put the pieces together – that was why he wanted to spend as little time in his company as possible. Whenever he was walking away from him, Oikawa always felt Iwaizumi’s piercing gaze on the back of his head – which freaked him out even more.

When Friday had finally come, Oikawa felt worst than ever. He blinked repeatedly because of the overwhelming sleepiness, the room was spinning and he felt his body heavy. His head was pounding and any kind of noise made his headache 100% worse. The exam papers swayed in and out of his focus, but due to some kind of wonder, he could finish it without any kind of incident.

They were walking out of the classroom when his body gave in. With the stress leaving him, there was nothing that would keep him going. He could hear Iwa-chan’s surprised gasp as he saw the ground nearing with an alarming speed. He squeezed his eyes and prepared for the impact, when he felt himself being lifted up. Two strong arms were wrapped around him and he blinked up, seeing that Iwa-chan was holding him in bridal style.

”If you try to say any joke about this, I will drop you!” He warned and Oikawa believed him without a doubt. Iwaizumi walked to the nurse’s office with him in his arms, then put him down onto one of the beds. He pushed him into lying position, then pulled the blanked to his chin. ”Now shut up and sleep!” He ordered, then turned around.

Oikawa reached out and grabbed his sleeve. Iwaizumi turned back and when he saw the begging, but cautious look in his best friends’ eyes, he sighed. He sat down on the edge of the bed and took his shoes off. Oikawa crawled a little bit away so Iwaizumi could climb under the covers beside him.

”Iwa-chan, you are so comfy!” Oikawa cooed as he wrapped his arms around his friend and cuddled as close to him as possible.

”Just shut up and go to sleep already!” Iwaizumi grunted, running his fingers through silky brown locks.

Within a few seconds Oikawa was out as a light.
