Just Like The Kids

Summary:

Recovering from trauma is rough and weird and ugly, but life doesn't wait for you to heal

Notes:

This started as a daily challenge and turned into something I saw potential in. I'm still basing the chapters on the prompt list Shazza made, but I won't be using all of them and I'm taking my time with it.

All chapter titles are lyrics from the song that inspired the tone of this fic, Kids by PUP (I HIGHLY recommend it!!)

Chapter 1: I've Been Navigating My Way

Chapter Text

"Josuke, there's someone here to see you."

"Okay, cool."

Tomoko poked her head in the door, speaking low. "There's a girl here to see you," She rephrased, raising her eyebrows on the word 'girl'.

"Okay? Cool?"

The door opened again almost as soon as Tomoko shut it. "Heyyy, hero boy!"

Josuke smiled, relieved that it wasn't one of the pushy girls from his class. Yukako sat on the edge of his bed, wasting no time in making herself comfortable. "Please don't call me that."

Yukako turned her attention toward the small television set up in his bedroom, looking at the movie Josuke had been half-watching. "Sorry I didn't come visit you in the hospital, those places give me the creeps."

"It's fine. I didn't wanna be there either."

"But hey, I'm here now, right?"

Josuke nodded, blowing a stray lock of hair out of his face.

Yukako leaned towards him, pushing his hair back. "What's up with all this, huh? Retiring the pomp now that you're a big hero?"

Josuke leaned away as much as he could, wincing at the ache in his shoulders. "No! Leave it alone! I just can't style it right now, alright? It hurts to move around too much...or uh, at all."

"Is that why it's so greasy?"

Josuke sighed, damn this girl can be annoying. "It's not that bad...is it?"

Yukako suddenly stood from his bed and headed for the door. "I'll be right back, okay? Don't run away! Ha!"

Yukako returned a few minutes later, arms full of spray bottles and combs. "Okay! I think I've got everything I need. You've got your own styling gel, right?"

Josuke groaned. "Yukako, please don't-"

"I'm gonna start with the dry shampoo, okay? Get rid of all that extra oil."

"I'm not gonna stop you, am I?"

Yukako smirked at him, brandishing her tools. "I believe the words you're looking for are 'Thank You'."
.....

"Ow! Fuckin' hell, Yukako, I'm tender headed!"

"I'm not being THAT rough, you're just being a baby!"

......

"Jeez, how many jars of this goop do you go through in a year? Your bathwater must be so slimy."

"Don't judge my artistic process, sister."

"At least it smells good. I'm sure the birds that raise their babies on your head appreciate it."

"I'm not gonna be injured forever, Yamagishi, and as soon as I can reach some ass, I'm kicking it."

.......

"Phew! Okay, time for the big reveal!" Yukako stood and retrieved Josuke's handheld mirror, stretching her arms as she went. "Damn, no wonder you're so buff, that was the most intense arm workout I've had in months!"

Josuke chuckled. "What can I say, beauty is pain."

She sat beside him and proudly displayed his reflection. He would never admit it, but she'd done a phenomenal job.

"That's pretty good. Solid B plus."

"Yeah, right!"

She moved to collect the supplies that had been strewn around his bedroom. "So? Do you feel better now?"

"I felt fine before."

"Sure you did. That's why you've been all cooped up in this dark room for a week."

"I'm bedridden, Yuka!"

As she prepared to take her leave, Josuke took another look at his reflection. He looked handsome, confident.

He looked like he did before Kira.

"Hey Yukako? Uh, T-thanks for doing this for me."

She smiled warmly. "You're welcome, hero boy."
