Chapter 1
Yoongi had always been the type to let life pass him by. Whether he was lazy, or just being practical, was a matter of opinion. Yoongi even based his college choice on which school was closest to his house. On his first day, he felt some regret in this decision because the school sat on top of a very high hill. Even in the fall season, he and the other students became hot and sweaty just from climbing up the steep road. Yoongi groaned at the fact that he would have to repeat the same procedure every day for the next four years.
Despite it being only the first day, he had overslept and needed to walk faster than he would have liked if he wanted to avoid being late to the opening ceremony. This was the reason for the grim face he wore throughout the time-wasting entrance ceremony. Most of the other students had the "starting a new journey" look on their face. The "hopeful yet filled with uncertainty" look that most new students wear when they enter a new school. For Yoongi, this was not the case. Many of his old classmates who lived in the area were also going to this college. This was why he didn't look as worried, or excited, as the other students.
When the ceremony finally ended Yoongi, along with his new classmates, arrived at their first lecture. Yoongi’s professor, Dr. Okabe, with his practiced-for-an-hour-in-front-of-a-mirror smile, walked to the front of the class and gave a self-introduction. He told the class that he had previously been a high school PE teacher before going back to school and eventually earning his doctorate. He was now teaching the large "BU111 - Introduction to Business" class that was currently in session. Dr. Okabe was also the coach for the handball team. He went on to say how, back when he was in school, he was a star player on the handball team and they had won the regional championship, and that this school seriously lacked handball players so whoever entered the team would become a regular instantly. Then he talked about how handball was the most interesting sport in the world for a while. Just when Yoongi was starting to hate handball, Dr. Okabe announced "Now, let's introduce ourselves!"
This kind of thing was pretty common for a first class, so Yoongi wasn't entirely caught off guard. One by one, the people on the left side of the class started to introduce themselves. They stood up, announced their name, the name of their old school, and other trivial things, such as a hobby or favourite food. Some people mumbled their way through it, a few had some pretty interesting introductions, while some tried to tell lame jokes that lowered the room's temperature by a substantial degree. As each person introduced themselves, Yoongi’s turn approached and he began to feel nervous. After Yoongi managed to finish his carefully thought-out and minimal-length introduction without stumbling over his words too much, he sat down, feeling the relief of having finished something unpleasant but necessary. The person next to him stood up for his turn and said the words that would be the topic of conversation for a long time. Words that Yoongi would remember for the rest of his life.
"My name is Kim Taehyung. I graduated from East High."
Up to this point the introduction was still completely normal, so Yoongi didn't even bother turning his head to look at him. He just stared at the front and listened.
Kim Taehyung continued. "Normal people don't interest me. If anyone here is an alien, a time traveler, or psychic, then come find me. That is all."
Upon hearing that, Yoongi couldn't help but look over. He noticed that the student who had just spoken had sleek hair dyed a blueish-green colour. His sharp face was filled with daring and challenge as the rest of the class stared at him. His seriousness and determination shone through his glinting eyes and long eyebrows. His lips were tightly pursed.
Taehyung, with his provocative eyes, scanned the class slowly and stopped to glare at Yoongi, who had his mouth wide open, and then sat down without so much as a smile.
Was he trying to be dramatic? Yoongi wondered. At that moment everyone in the classroom’s mind was filled with questions. Everyone was confused as to what their reaction should be. ‘Should I laugh?’ they wondered. No one knew. After the fairies of silence danced around the classroom for thirty-something seconds, the professor, with some hesitation, signaled the next person to continue, and the tense atmosphere lifted. After he grabbed everyone's attention on the first day, Taehyung reverted to being a silent university student. As Yoongi would find out later, this was the calm before the storm.
Yoongi’s new school wasn’t exactly what people would call “prestigious” and so most people who went there came from one of the four high schools in the local city and had average grades. This, of course, included Taeyung's school East High. In Yoongi’s class there were people who had graduated with Taehyung and knew what his silence symbolized. Unfortunately, Yoongi did not know any former East High students, and so no one could explain to him how serious the situation was. Consequently, a few days after that intense introduction, Yoongi did something he would never forget, he tried to talk to Taehyung before class.
When Taehyung was sitting quietly in his seat, he looked just like a normal, albeit incredibly good looking student and Yoongi somehow ended up with his unassigned-assigned seat right next to his. Yoongi started the conversation by bringing up the whole introduction incident.
"Hey." He said, "The stuff you said in your intro, were you being serious?"
With his arm crossed on his chest, Kim Taehyung kept his posture, and stared right into his eyes.
"What 'stuff in my intro'?"
"The stuff about the aliens."
"Are you an alien?" He looked very serious.
"... No."
"If you’re not, then what do you want?"
"... Nothing I guess."
"Then don't talk to me. You’re wasting my time."
His glare was so cold that Yoongi found himself stuttering "Sorry" before realizing it. Taehyung then removed his glare from him disdainfully and frowned at the whiteboard. Yoongi would have whipped back a line or two but couldn't think of anything good to say. Thankfully, at that moment, the professor came in. Yoongi turned his head back to his desk and noticed that a few people were looking at him with looks of interest. Yoongi’s face crinkled in annoyance. After he looked back at them, however, he noticed that they all had the same feeble expression on their faces. Some even nodded at him with sympathy. Yoongi later on learned that all those people had graduated from East High.
Given that his first contact with Taehyung had ended horribly, Yoongi figured that he should keep his distance for now, for safety's sake. And so, Yoongi’s first week of college passed by. But, just as Yoongi had, there were always people who wanted to talk to the eyebrow-locking, scowl-mouthed Taehyung. Most of these people were fussy girls who, when they saw that a classmate was becoming isolated, tried to be kind and help out. The fact that Taehyung was very good looking might have had something to do with it. While that’s not a bad thing, Yoongi thought, they should at least check their target beforehand.
"Hi, did you see that TV show last night? The 9 o'clock one." a girl asked Taehyung one day.
“No.”
"Oh, why?"
"I don't know."
"You should try it. Even if you started in the middle you wouldn't be lost. Do you need me to go over the previous story for you?"
"No, you’re annoying."
That's how it always went. Yoongi figured it would be much better if Taehyung could just answer no with a poker face and leave it at that. But instead he had to show his impatience in both his expression and voice. This just made his victim believe that they did something wrong. At the end they could only say "I see… then I'll just..." and ask themselves "What did I say wrong?"
Though Yoongi wouldn't have minded eating lunch alone, he didn't want others to think that he was a loner when everyone else was happily eating out with their friends. That's why Yoongi always ate lunch on campus with one of his old high school friends, a girl named Tara, as well an East High girl he’d met named Seohyun. They started to talk about Taehyung.
"Did you try to talk to him?” Seohyun asked innocently. Yoongi nodded.
"And then he said some weird stuff and you didn't know how to react?"
"That's right!"
Seohyun put her sliced boiled egg into her mouth, chewed, and said "If that guy is interested in you, he wouldn't say weird stuff like that. All I can say is give up! You can see just by his hair and the way he dresses that he's not normal. I was in his class three years in a row, so I know how he is." She used this line as the beginning of her speech. "He always does incredibly weird things. I thought he would try to control himself after he got into college but apparently, he hasn't. You heard his introduction speech, right?"
"You mean the alien stuff?" Tara, who was picking bones out of her fried fish, chimed in.
"Yeah that. Even back in high school he always said and did lots of weird stuff. For example there was a school vandalization incident!"
"What happened?"
"Well, you know that little cart thing you use to draw field lines with? What's it called... Anyway, he sneaked into school at night and, with that thing, drew a gigantic symbol in the middle of the field." Seohyun had a mischievous smile on her face as she remembered the incident. "It was crazy. I got to school early that morning and all I saw were big circles and triangles. I couldn't figure out what they were supposed to be, so I went up to the fourth floor to get a bird's eye view. That didn't help— I still didn't know what that symbol was."
"Ah, I think I saw that before. Didn't the local news have a story on it? It even had a helicopter view! The symbol looked like some kind of broken Nazca line," Tara said.
Yoongi didn't remember ever hearing about that incident before.
"Yeah, I saw the article. The headline was something like 'Mystery Vandal Strikes East High At Night,' right? Well, care to guess who pulled that stunt?"
"Don't tell me it's him." Said Tara.
"Yup, he admitted it himself. Naturally, he got called into the principal's office. Every teacher was there, questioning him on why he did it."
"Why did he do it, then?"
"I don't know," Seohyun answered, "I heard he refused to say anything. Of course, when you're getting glared at by him, you tend to give up on whatever you were planning to say. Someone said that he drew the symbol to call out to UFOs, others said that it was a magic symbol and he was trying to summon monsters, or that he was trying to open a portal to different worlds. There were many speculations, but as long as he refuses to talk, we’ll never know if those rumors are true or not. To this day it's still a mystery.”
The picture of Taehyung, with his no-nonsense expression, busy laying the lines in the middle of the school field at night, floated into Yoongis mind. Taehyung definitely would have prepared the drawing tools and the line powders beforehand in the storage room. Maybe he even brought a flashlight. Under its dim yellow light, Kim Taehyung looked very sober and tragic, in Yoongi’s imagination. But, truth be told, Taehyung probably really did do it to summon UFOs or monsters, or something. He was probably out on the field for the entire night working on it, but nothing showed up, and all he was left with was a beat down feeling.
"That's not the only thing he did!" Seohyun continued, "Once I came to the classroom in the morning and found that all the desks had been moved out into the hall, and one time there were a bunch of printed stars up on the school roof. Another time he was going around the school putting Ofuda all over the place. You know, those paper talisman things that ward off vampires or something. I just can't understand him, but he is still very popular" Seohyun added. "He's cute, athletic, and smart when he’s not preoccupied with aliens. Even though he’s weird, if he keeps his mouth shut, he can seem normal."
"Where did you learn all this gossip?" Tara asked.
"Oh that’s not even half of it,” said Seohyun, “There was a short period of time where he dated people non-stop. From what I heard, the longest relationship lasted a week, the shortest one lasted only 5 minutes. And the only reason he gave for dumping them was 'I don't have time to socialize with normal humans.' What’s that supposed to mean?”
It seemed to Yoongi that Seohyun was speaking from experience. After she noticed Yoongi’s questioning look, she became a bit flustered.
"I just heard this from other people! For some reason, he wouldn't turn down anyone who asked him out. By third year everyone understood and no one asked him out anymore. I have a funny feeling that history will repeat itself in college, so I am warning you now: give up. This is coming from someone who was in the same class as him.”
“Alright, say what you want,” said Yoongi, “I wasn’t interested in him like that anyways.”
Seohyun put her empty lunchbox back into her bag, and let out a sinister giggle.
"If I had to choose one, I would choose him, Jung Hoseok."
She nodded her chin towards a group of guys eating a little ways away. In the the middle of the conversing group, with a rosy smile on his face, was Jung Hoseok.
"Judging from my analysis, he is definitely on the 'Top Three Hottest First Year Guys' list."
"You’ve checked out every single first year guy in this school?" Yoongi asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Yeah, you only get to go through college once and I want to have as much fun as possible while I’m here."
Even ignoring Seohyuns egoistic comments, Yoongi could tell that Jung Hoseok was quite a different kind of guy than Kim Taehyung. Mainly because he always let off a smile-like and caring impression. Recently, no one dared talk to Taehyung anymore, except for Hoseok. No matter how harsh Taehyung was, Hoseok still tried to talk to him from time to time. Hoseok was so passionate and nice that no one could say anything bad about him. It was as though he had fallen from the sky and been born with the sole purpose of being the nicest person ever. Compared to the often scowling, science fiction-obsessed Kim Taehyung, the choice was obvious.
For the rest of September Taehyung kept relatively quiet. To Yoongi, this was quite a relaxing, albeit boring, month. But, even at that time, Yoongi observed some of Taehyung's eccentric behaviors.
First, Taehyung dressed very strangely, often wearing clothes that he seemed to have customized himself. Most of his shirts had holes in them that seemed to have been cut out blunty with scissors. He also had a very strange habit of changing his hairstyle every day. Yoongi observed that there was some sort of a pattern going with his hair. On Monday, he would come to school with his blueish-green hair down. The next day, he would wear either a headband or a single hair clip. Then, the next day, he would wear matching clips, one on each side of his head, or two little ponytails. The day after that was three clips. By Friday, he would have four hair clips attached to seemingly random spots on his head.
Monday = 0, Tuesday = 1, Wednesday = 2, and so on.
As the day of the week increased, so would Taehyung’s number of hair clips. And then the next Monday, the whole process would start over again. Yoongi had no idea why he was doing it. ‘What kind of guy owns that many hair clips anyways?’ He wondered. Following the previous logic, he should have his hair clipped in 6 places on Sunday... Yoongi suddenly wanted to see his Sunday hairstyle.
Secondly, at the end of their last class everyday, Taehyung would completely disappear. When the school bell rang, he would grab his backpack and shoot out of the classroom. Logically, Yoongi thought that he just went home. Later on, Yoongi was informed by some of his friends who had joined after school clubs, that this was not the case. Apparently, Taehyung had been testing out every club the school had to offer. One day, he was running laps with the Cross Country Club, another day he was sewing pillowcases with the Sewing Club. A student Yoongi had met who was on the baseball team told him that Taehyung had tried out for every sports team at school and had gotten onto all of them, but then never showed up again after the initial tryouts. All the team captains had come up to him at various times to try to persuade him into joining their team but he turned them all down. His explanation was "It’s annoying to do the same activity every day." In the end, Taehyung never ended up becoming a member of a single team or club.
Because of the whole sports team thing, the weird hair, and his previous reputation from East High, news of a "weird first year guy" spread throughout the school. Within a month, there was not a single person who didn't know who Kim Taehyung was. By October, people still didn’t know who the college’s president was, but Kim Taehyung was a household name.
After the reading week break ended, Yoongi was walking up the hill to school, the unusually sunny October weather blasting onto his skin. The steep hill never seemed to end. Just what is it that the Earth wants? Yoongi wondered, Is it for me to suffer?
"Hey, Yoongi."
From behind, Seohyun clapped Yoongi on the shoulder.
"What did you do for reading week?"
"I took my little sister to see my grandma in the countryside."
"Boring."
"Fine, what did you do, then?"
"Did a bit of part time work."
"You don't seem like a part-time kind of person."
"Yoongi, you’re in college now, why do you still bring your little sister to see your grandpa and grandma? You gotta at least try to look like a college student."
Yoongi rolled his eyes, "My cousins always get together this time of year.”
The walk uphill was now even more annoying.
Seohyun, long winded as always, went on about how she had met some cute guys at her workplace and was planning on asking them all out at different times and then going on several exciting dates. As Yoongi unenthusiastically listened to Seohyun's date schedule, they arrived at the school gate.
Kim Taehyung was already sitting beside Yoongi’s unassigned-assigned seat staring out the window when Yoongi entered the classroom. He had two blue hair clips on his head. 'I guess today is Wednesday', Yoongi thought. After sitting down, for some unknown reason, Yoongi found himself once again talking to Kim Taehyung.
"Do you change your hair style each day because of the aliens?"
Like a robot, Kim Taehyung turned his face slowly towards Yoongi, and stared at him with his serious expression. His intense gaze was as scary as Yoongi remembered.
"When did you notice?" His tone was as though he was talking to a rock on the side of the road.
Yoongi paused for a while to think about it.
"Hmm... for a while."
"Really?" Taehyung sighed, put his chin on his palm, looking irritated.
"Yeah,” said Yoongi “I noticed because you seem to have a different look and feel everyday.”
“Oh” said Taehyung, "Well, I think each day is different. Like for color: Monday is yellow, Tuesday is red, Wednesday is blue, Thursday is green, Friday is gold, Saturday is brown, and Sunday is white."
Yoongi could sort of understand what he was getting at. "Then that means if we use numbers to represent the colours, Monday is zero and Sunday is six, right?
"That is correct."
“I see,” Yoongi pondered, "But Monday seems more like a one to me."
Taehyung’s eyes narrowed "Who asked for your opinion?"
"... Ok."
Seemingly unsatisfied by Yoongi’s response, Taehyung turned away. Yoongi just sat there uncomfortably and let time slip by.
Turning back towards Yoongi, Taehyung asked, "Have I met you somewhere before? Like a few years ago?"
"Don't think so."
As Yoongi answered, Dr. Okabe entered the classroom, and their conversation ended for the day.
Yoongi found it surprising that Taehyung actually answered him properly. He thought that Taehyung would be like, “You’re annoying, moron, shut up! Whatever!” But Yoongi was also just as surprised at himself for finding the guts to say anything to him in the first place.
When he came to school the next day and discovered that instead of three hair clips, Taehyung had zero hair clips and had dyed his hair a more natural looking dark brown, Yoongi was kind of disappointed.
Yoongi thought it was a bit extreme to make such a drastic change just because of something he had mentioned off hand. But when Yoongi asked Taehyung why he changed his hair Taehyung just said, "No reason." And didn't show any sort of special expression. But that was the answer Yoongi would have expected anyways.
"Did you really try to join all the clubs?" Yoongi asked next.
And from that day on, talking to Taehyung during the bit of time before their first class became part of Yoongi’s routine. Of course, if he didn't try to start the conversation, Taehyung would show no sign of reacting. If Yoongi ever mentioned how last night's TV show was, or how the weather was, or anything Taehyung deemed a "boring topic,” he would just ignore him. Luckily, Yoongi never liked those topics much either.
"So Is there a club that is more fun than the others? I’m thinking about joining one."
"None." Taehyung answered flatly. "Absolutely none." He slowly let out a breath. "I thought that college would be a bit better but, in the end, it's the same as mandatory education. Nothing changes at all. Looks like I joined the wrong school."
'Well what kind criteria did you employ that lead you to this one?' Yoongi wanted to ask, but held his tongue.
"Sports clubs and cultural clubs are all the same. If only there were some unique clubs in school..." Taehyung continued.
"How come you get to decide if a club is unique or not?"
"Shut up. If I like a club, then it's unique, otherwise it's boring." Taehyung turned his face away in annoyance, marking the end of the day's conversation.
The next day Yoongi came back with more questions prepared. "I overheard something the other day, it's not something important anyway, but did you really dump everyone you ever dated?"
"Why do I need to hear this from you?" Taehyung grumbled, "Did Seohyun tell you? God, I can't believe that I'm in the same class as that idiot even after I graduated high school. She isn't one of those stalking psychos, is she?”
"I don't think so," Yoongi said.
"I don't know what rumors you heard, but it doesn't matter, most of them are true."
"Isn't there someone out there you want to have a serious relationship with?"
"Absolutely no one!" Total dismissal seemed to be his motto. "Every single one was moron, I just couldn’t stand to be in any serious relationship with them. Each one of them would ask me to meet at the train station on Sunday, then for sure we would go to movies, amusement park, or some sporting event. We’d have a lunch date or something or go to a café and just drink tea. At the end of the day they would always say 'see you tomorrow'!"
Yoongi personally thought that that seemed like a totally normal date, nothing wrong with that, but didn’t dare say anything out loud. If Taehyung says it's bad then, for him, it must be bad.
"Then, without fail they’ll text me and say they really like me or whatever and want to make it official. What the Hell! This is a sober subject, at least tell me face-to-face!!"
"Hmm, you are right. I would tell the person directly."
"Honestly, why is everyone on earth is so boring? Everyone only cares about themselves and not about actual serious things! I’ve by bothered by this for a few years now."
"Then, what kind of person would you consider 'interesting'? Is it going to have be aliens after all?"
"Yeah I’m fine with aliens, time travelers, stuff like that. So long as they aren’t normal, I don’t care if they’re a boy or a girl."
"Why do you always insist on something other than human? What’s wrong with humans?"
Taehyung looked at Yoongi exasperatedly. "Because humans are no fun at all!"
"That... maybe you’re right."
Honestly, Yoongi thought, Taehyung kind of had a point. If Yoongi suddenly found out that a student in his class was half earthling and half alien, even he would think that's cool. If Seohyun, who was currently trying to spy on him and Taehyung from across the lecture hall, was a detective from the future, that would be even cooler. If Hoseok, who was smiling constantly for some reason, had any sort of supernatural power, then Yoongi’s school life would be as exciting as it could get. But none of it was possible. No aliens, time travelers, or supernatural powers existed in the world. And, if they did, they wouldn't just appear right in front of him, a humble citizen, and say, "Hello, I'm actually an alien.”
"THAT'S WHY!” Taehyung suddenly stood up and knocked his chair down, causing everyone to turn and look at him. "THAT’S WHY I AM WORKING SO HARD!!"
"Sorry I am late!" The always-optimistic Dr. Okabe rushed into the classroom.
When he saw everyone looking at Taehyung, who was still standing, his fists clenched, eyes fixed on the ceiling, he became just as surprised.
"Er... class is about to start…"
Taehyung sat down immediately and glared at the corner of his desk. Yoongi and the rest of the class turned back around. Then Okabe, obviously disoriented by the commotion, wobbled to the stage and let out a soft cough.
"I apologize for being late. Um… Then let's begin!"
He began to teach and the class atmosphere reverted to normal, the sort of atmosphere Taehyung hated the most.
It may not seem like it, but deep inside his heart Yoongi was really envious of Taehyung's attitude towards life. Taehyung still had aspiriations to meet someone from the supernatural world, aspirations that Yoongi had abandoned long ago. And Taehyung always enthusiastically tried to achieve his dream. He believed that, if sitting around waiting would not achieve anything, then he needed to call the supernatural beings out himself. Yoongi realized this was the reason Taehyung did strange things like draw white lines on the school field, paint symbols on the school roof, and paste cursed paper talismans everywhere. Waiting achieves nothing, so why not perform some weird ceremonies to call something exciting out? At the end of the day, however, nothing ever happened. Maybe that was why Taehyung always had that "damn-the-whole-world" look on his face.
"Hey, Yoongi." After class, Seohyun, with a mystified face, cornered Yoongi. “What kind of magical spell did you cast?"
"What magical spell?"
She pointed at Taehyung's now vacant seat. "This is the first time I've seen him talk to a person for so long! What did you guys talk about?"
“Oh, ah, what did we talk about? I just asked him some normal questions, that's all really.”
"Well I am personally very shocked!" Seohyun huffed.
Tara popped up from behind. "Yoongi has a history of liking strange guys." she said with a knowing smirk.
"Well, It doesn't matter if you like strange guys, Yoongi. What I can't understand is why Taehyung would talk to you for so long? I don't get. It’s not like you’re that interesting or anything"
"Maybe Yoongi is as weird as he is?" Tara suggested.
"Oh! that would make sense!”
"Actually, I want to know too." Said a new, cheerful voice. Yoongi looked up and saw Hoseok approaching, with his perpetually smiling face. "I tried talking to Taehyung a few times already, but nothing came of it. Could you teach me to talk to him?"
Yoongi acted like he thought about this for a while, but actually didn't really think at all.
"I dunno."
Despite Yoongi’s unenthusiasm, Hoseok smiled, “I am so relieved now. He can't go on being isolated from his classmates like this, so it's great that you've become his friend.”
Yoongi shook his head uncertainly. The only expression Taehyung ever gave Yoongi was a scowl. How did that make them friends?
"You need to continue helping him so that he can get along with the class. We're all in the same program and we all have the same classes together after all, so we're counting on you! If there is anything we need to tell Taehyung, we can just ask you to pass the message!"
Yoongi did not know what to think of this development.
"Please?" Hoseok asked sincerely.
Faced with his request, Yoongi could only give vague responses like "umm" and "ahh...” Hoseok took that as a yes and gave a yellow-tulip-like smile, then went back to his other friends.
The next day Yoongi found out that someone had decided there was a problem with their unasigned-assigned seat situation and had brought it up to Dr. Okabe who decided that everyone in class now needed to officially change their seats monthly. Dr. Okabe called on Hoseok to help assigns the seats and Hoseok was more than happy to help out. He wrote all the seat numbers onto little pieces of paper, placed them in a hat, and let everyone draw from it. Yoongi got the seat in the second to last row, one seat from the window. Somehow, he again ended up next to Taehyung, who got the seat right next to the window.
Yoongi noted that Taehyung was becoming more and more talkative as time went by. He even began to start conversations with Yoongi before class, unprompted.
"Why hasn't something interesting happened yet?!" Taehyung exclaimed on morning, "Like profs getting murdered inside a locked classroom or something."
“Where is this idea coming from…"
"I joined the Mystery Study Group."
"Oh? What happened?"
"It was terrible! Nothing interesting happened! All the club members are detective novel fans but there isn't anyone in that club who even resembles a detective. And I also tried out Supernatural Study Group, which I actually had high hopes for."
"Really?"
"Yeah, But they all turned out to be a bunch of occult maniacs. Does that sound fun to you?"
"Not really."
"Ah, man, this is too boring! Why doesn't this school have any decently interesting clubs?"
"Dunno, guess, there's not much you can do about that."
"I thought that, in college, I would encounter some kick ass clubs! This is like trying to go into the Major League but then you discover that the school you're attending doesn't even have a baseball team."
Taehyung looked as if he were some sort of banshee, ready to go to a hundred Buddhist monasteries and lay curses. Taehyung looked up at the celling and let out a groan.
Should I pity him? Yoongi wondered.
Yoongi didn't even know what kind of club Taehyung would want to join. He wondered if even Taehyung knew the answer to that. Yoongi always heard him saying he wanted to "do something interesting." What is "something interesting?" Does that involve solving a murder mystery? Searching for UFOs? Exorcism? Yoongi was pretty sure Taehyung had no idea either.
"I think it can't be helped if there aren't any interesting clubs."
Yoongi said, figuring he would just say what was on his mind.
"I feel like humans are usually happy to just go along with how things are. Those who aren’t will try to invent or discover something that will change things a little. Someone wanted to fly so they invented airplanes. Someone wanted to travel easily so automobiles and trains were made. But those things were created by people with special talents. Only a genius can convert those imaginings into reality. We’re just ordinary people who should just live our ordinary lives. We shouldn't act impulsively just because we feel adventurous."
"Shut up." Taehyung snapped, cutting off what was probably the longest phrase Yoongi had ever spoken. But Yoongi really did believed what he had just said. Yeah, it would be nice if aliens and stuff existed. But the world doesn't have those. Long live the Laws of Physics! Thanks to those things humans can live in peace, however boring it may be. Though Taehyung may be upset by this.
The warm October sun made everyone in the classroom sleepy. Just as Yoongi was nodding his head and going to sleep, a powerful force exerted itself on his shoulder and he almost fell out of his chair.
"What do you think you are doing!?" Yoongi whispered angrily. He turned his head around and saw Taehyung, one hand still on Yoongi's shoulder, smiling a smile that was as bright as the tropical sun. Yoongi realized that this must be the first time he’d ever seen him smile. If smiles could be measured in temperature, then Taehyung’s smile was as hot as a tropical rain forest.
"I got it! Why didn't I think of this before?" Taehyung exclaimed, with eyes brighter than Alpha Centauri. "If it doesn't exist, I can just create one myself!"
"Create what?"
"Create a club!"
