eye of the storm

Summary:

When Hizashi entered the living room the next morning while Shouta trudged into the kitchen for coffee, he had to fight back the urge to squeal.

“Shouta, look!” His husband groaned, rubbing his temples while he waited for the machine to kick into gear.

“Give me a second, ‘Zashi. Christ, it’s too early for this.” The blonde rolled his eyes. Shouta was just so grouchy sometimes.

“Seriously, come look!” The dark-haired man surrendered, taking up his now full mug and dragging his feet into the living area.

“What exactly am I looking at here?” Hizashi gasped, struggling to keep his voice down to a reasonable level.

“Whaaaat? What do you mean, they’re adorable!” He made an exaggerated gesture to the teens on the couch. Shouta huffed and turned to look once more.

Izuku is safe with his boyfriend for the time being, and the two spend some time together.

Work Text:

Izuku was lying on top of Hitoshi, one arm dangling off the couch and his face pressed against his boyfriend’s chest. Hitoshi had his arms draped around the smaller boy, securing him. Their chests rose and fell in nearly perfect sync with each other’s. The baby pink weighted blanket covered both of their legs, where two of the cats were asleep. Midnight was tucked away in a crevice between the back of the loveseat and the two boys. Antidisestablishmentarianism has awoken them merely minutes ago, already yowling for his breakfast despite it only being 9:30.

Okay, so maybe 9:30 wasn’t early for most people, but to a man who has been working graveyard shifts since he graduated high school, every second of sleep is precious.

Shouta shrugged, turning back into the kitchen to fix another mug of coffee for his husband. The man in question gasped in falsified disdain, following quietly behind.

“C’mon, you’re no fun sometimes. That was adorable and you know it.” Shouta merely hummed in response. The blonde pouted and leaned back against the counters, crossing his arms before an idea came to him.

“We should make breakfast for ‘em!”

“We?” Hizashi laughed.

“You and I both know I’ll burn this apartment down if I’m left alone in here, and I won’t even hear the fire alarm go off. Come onnnn, Shouta, it’ll be fun!” It sounded like the polar opposite of fun to Shouta, but he relented anyways. Hizashi beamed, practically shooting rays of sunshine across the kitchen. He turned to start digging excitedly through the wall cabinets

“Yess! Alright, there’s pancake mix in here somewhere…” Shouta raised a hand, interrupting him.

“Hold on, pancakes? I thought you meant eggs and toast or something, not that.” Hizashi shrugged and continued to dig through the cabinets.

“Does it make much difference? When you boil it down they don’t have that much of a time difference when you’ve got a party of four.” Shouta dragged a hand across his face, finishing his coffee and immediately making to pour another mug. Hizashi’s voice echoed in from the cabinet.

“Aha, found it! Alright, so-“ He was cut off when his hand bumped a metal jar of… something… and sent it crashing to the ground. A yelp and thud could be heard from the living room, followed closely behind by three indignant hisses and Hitoshi’s groan. Hizashi looked to Shouta, who arched an eyebrow as if to say “are you going to take care of that?” Hizashi sighed, turning to peer into the living room. Midoriya lay across the floor, looking dazed, while Hitoshi propped himself up on one arm and rubbed the sleep from his eyes with the other. Pumpkin and Akiko looked mildly perturbed but not hurt, while Midnight had already bolted into the master bedroom to hide from the world for a while. Hizashi put on a sheepish smile before calling out to the boys.

“Hey, sorry about that! Wasn’t watching what I was doing. We’re making breakfast!” Izuku simply nodded and picked himself off of the ground. Hitoshi brightened some at the mention of food.

“What’s for breakfast?” Aizawa finally turned to talk to his son.

“Pancakes. How late did you two stay up last night?” Hitoshi and Izuku shared a look, Izuku shrugging, before the purple-haired teen turned his attention back to his dad.

“It can’t have been much longer after you went in for the night, I can’t remember doing much after that. The black-haired man sighed.

“Alright then. Do you want coffee?” Hitoshi rolled his eyes.

“What kind of question is that?” His dad tossed his shoulders and turned back into the kitchen to prepare another mug. Hitoshi leaned into his boyfriend’s shoulder. He brought a hand up to his mouth and yawned. The freckled boy smiled slightly, reaching out to invite Pumpkin into his lap. The fat tabby settled down, purring contentedly just as Izuku’s phone went off on the coffee table. Hitoshi looked to his boyfriend.

“Aren’t you going to answer that?” Izuku shook his head.

“No, that’s my mom’s ringtone.” Neither of the boys noticed the two in the kitchen turn to listen in. Izuku continued in a smaller voice, “I’m kind of hoping to avoid it for a little while? I mean, of course I’m going to talk to her eventually, just…” Hitoshi nodded.

“Right, a lot happened yesterday, I don’t blame you for wanting to hold off. Hell, I can hardly bring myself to talk to people when they haven’t done anything, I don’t know how you do it.” Izuku giggled, bringing a hand to cover his mouth.

“You’ll have to get used to get used to it when you transfer to the hero course. Half of us will talk your ear off whether you like it or not.” Hitoshi rolled his eyes with a smirk, sticking out his tongue slightly at the freckled boy beside him.

“It can’t be any worse than your rambling, though.” Izuku scoffed and shoved Hitoshi off of his shoulder playfully.

“I mean, no, but still, it gets rough.”

“I can’t believe the toughest thing I’ll have to deal with if I get into the hero course is your classmates talking to me, as opposed to getting the shit kicked out of me every afternoon.” Aizawa cleared his throat from the kitchen.

“Language.”

The purple-haired teen rolled his eyes. “Sure thing, old man.” He looked up into Izuku’s horror-stricken face and couldn’t help the laughter that bubbled out from his chest. “Oh my god, you should see your face right now!” Izuku pouted.

“Jerk. And I never said that the talkative ones will be the hardest thing, just that it’ll be strange.” Hizashi spoke, suddenly behind them, causing Izuku to jolt in his seat and startle the cat from his lap.

“Whoops, sorry! Anyways, Shouta and I have some errands to run. Breakfast’s on the counter, maybe go get to it before Pumpkin does. We’ll see you two later.” Aizawa spoke from the doorway.

“Don’t do anything stupid, Hitoshi.” Hitoshi scoffed.

“How come I’m the only one who’s a hazard? Izuku could just as well burn the complex down.” The boy beside him squeaked as Aizawa rolled his eyes.

“Please, I’m not stupid.”

“Alright, see you kids later!” With that, Hizashi pushed his husband out the door and left the two teens alone.

“So, pancakes?”

“Yeah. We’d better stop Pumpkin before he shoves his stupid little idiot face in a pool of syrup.” Izuku gasped, faking offense.

“Don’t be mean!” Hitoshi smiled, taking his boyfriend by the hand and leading him into the kitchen.

After they had eaten and completed what little they had left of their homework, the two found themselves laying around aimlessly.

“Man, who’d’ve thought I’d ever want dad to get back so soon. You should try making fun of him with me, it’s hilarious.” Izuku whipped his head around to his boyfriend, shock displayed clearly across his freckled face. Cute, Hitoshi thought absentmindedly, barely able to register what the green-haired boy was actually saying.

“What? No! He’s still my teacher, remember? I’d get stuck running his hell course for sure!” Hitoshi laughed, ruffling his boyfriend’s curls.

“And I’ll chew him out. I have way too much blackmail on him for him to be making your life more miserable than he has to.” Izuku scoffed.

“And I’m sure he’s got plenty on you, too.” The purple-haired boy shrugged.

“Sure, but have I ever gotten slammed headfirst into a wall because I got distracted by an alley cat in the middle of a villain fight?” Izuku gasped, propping himself up on Hitoshi’s bed to gaze at the boy on the floor with wide green eyes.

“Wait, did that really happen?”

“Why don’t you ask him yourself?” Izuku immediately tinted pink, bringing a hand to his cheek.

“No! Hitoshi, he would kill me. I’d like to live a while longer, please.” Hitoshi scoffed, sitting next to where Midoriya lay on the bed.

“I’d like to see him try. You’d just suplex him and apologize afterwards.”

“He can erase my quirk, Hitoshi!”

“And you can kick ass even without it, Izuku. Trust me, I’d know. I experienced it firsthand.” Izuku stammered out an apology as his face turned pink, making the darkened bruise on his jaw contrast against the rest of his skin further. Hitoshi’s expression knitted into a frown, hand reaching out to run his fingers over his boyfriend’s face. Izuku squeaked.

“Um, w-what are you doing?”

“That looks painful. Is it?”

“N-no, I mean, it hurt to g-get it, but honestly bruises don’t hurt unless you press on them.” Hitoshi immediately drew his hand back, only for Izuku to seize it and lace their fingers together. “W-wait, no, you were fine! It’s okay, you’re really gentle, I-“ He groaned and pushed his face into the mattress, ears red. Hitoshi smiled, the thought of cute crossing his mind again as he lifted the other boy’s chin to look at him.

“You okay?” The boy nodded. “Just ask me, Izuku, it’s okay.” He brought a scarred hand to his mouth, the gears turning in his head as he struggled internally.

“Um, y-you can… keep doing it- only if you want to! You d-don’t have to if-“ Hitoshi cut him off, cupping a hand over his freckled cheek.

“It’s all good. Don’t worry so much, I’m not going to bite!” Izuku laughed weakly, leaning into the touch with a sigh.

“You asking me not to worry is like asking Aizawa-sensei not to be terrifying.” The purple-haired teen laughed loudly, nose wrinkling as he wheezed out.

“God, you’re really intimidated by him, aren’t you? I don’t see why, he’s about as threatening as a kitten.”

“You didn’t see him threaten to expel whoever came in last on the quirk assessment, and then drag me over to him when I tried to use my quirk for the softball throw and tell me I’d be a burden on my teammates, then reset the score and basically tell me ‘if you fuck up you’re out of here.’ I think I have good reason to be at least a little scared of him.” Hitoshi’s brow furrowed.

“I mean, I would imagine it’s frustrating when one of your students showed up with a super powerful quirk and seemingly no effort put into controlling it. I don’t think he was entirely unfair in that regard.”

“I didn’t really have the time to learn to control it, though! I only got my quirk right before the entrance exam.” Hitoshi sputtered.

“Wait, run that by me again?”

“Oh, I haven’t told you! My quirk came in super late. I was essentially quirkless until I was 15- the doctors think I only got it because I had enough muscle mass to use it without blowing up.” Hitoshi stared at the green-haired boy beside him, violet eyes wide. He brought his free hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose.

“Wait, quirkless? Oh man, so I said all that horrible shit to you at the sports festival and it wasn’t even near true!” Izuku giggled, putting a hand on his boyfriend’s knee and looking up at him.

“Well, yeah, but I understand why you said it. You were trying just as hard to win as I was. That’s nobody’s fault.” Hitoshi still didn’t look convinced. “Come on, I know you didn’t mean it. Even if you did then, I know you don’t now. Geez, and you tell me not to worry.” He cracked a grin at the other boy. “Hypocrite.” Hitoshi smiled again, moving his hand upwards to run his fingers through emerald curls. Izuku sighed, eyes closing in contentment. Suddenly, a white cat jumped in out of nowhere, landing on the freckled boy’s shoulders and mewling at Hitoshi. The teen groaned.

“No, brat! Y’all’ve already been fed, if I give you anything else then Pumpkin will... sit on me or something.” The cat mrrped in upset before jumping off of Izuku’s back and running back to the living area.

“Wow, the great hero, intimidated by a cat sitting on him.” Hitoshi tossed his hair dramatically before pushing Izuku upright and shoving a pillow at him.

“I’m sorry, we can’t all be built like you are.” Izuku narrowed his eyes, grabbing a pillow of his own and meeting Hitoshi’s eyes.

“Is that a challenge?”

The two boys stared at the mess of sheets, blankets, and pillows strewn across the room.

“You know, in hindsight, maybe this wasn’t the best idea.” Izuku laughed.

“Maybe? Hitoshi, it looks like a war zone in here.” The purple-haired teen shrugged.

“Guess we should clean up before Aizawa gets home, then…” Izuku squawked.

“Oh, no, do you know when they’re getting back?”

Hitoshi shook his head, placing a hand on his boyfriend’s shoulder. “No, but they usually aren’t back until the evening unless they specify. Don’t worry. Well, do your best.” Izuku laughed, a hand coming to cover his mouth.

“No promises. Come on, let’s get started. The sooner we get this done the more time we’ll have!” He bent over to begin picking up the stray pillows, occasionally shimmying one back into its case. Hitoshi followed close behind, returning blankets and sheets back to the bed. Reaching the corner of the room, he pulled a blanket off where it was draped over his guitar. An idea crossed his mind.

“Hey, freckles, do you sing?” The green-haired boy flushed, doing an impressive imitation of his classmate with the acid quirk - the name was lost on Hitoshi at the moment.

“W-what did you call me?” The purple-haired boy grinned.

“Freckles. Why, do you not like it?” He shot Izuku what he hoped was puppy eyes. Apparently they worked, because the other boy turned even pinker and held up his hands, dumping the pillows in his arms onto the floor.

“N-no, I mean, yes? I-um, I like it, I-“ he groaned, pulling the hood of the hoodie he was wearing up over his head and stretching it down to cover his face.

“Hey, c’mon, don’t hide from me!” Hitoshi grinned, kneeling down to peer under the hood. “Come out?”

“No, y-you have too much power!” The purple-haired boy laughed and straightened up, pulling Izuku against his chest in a hug.

“Aw, no, I’m sorry Izuku! Please come out of hoodie town, I’ll stop calling you that.” Izuku immediately pulled the hood back over his shoulders and looked up at Hitoshi.

“N-no, I didn’t say I don’t like it! It’s just embarrassing. I l-like it, I’ll get used to it! Just, uh- maybe don’t call me that in front of your parents?” Hitoshi laughed.

“Sure thing, freckles. Did you hear my question?”

“Hm?”

“I asked if you sing.” Izuku shrugged.

“I mean, anyone does, it’s just a matter of whether it’s good or not. I’m not very good at it but I can.” Hitoshi snorted, ruffling the shorter boy’s curls.

“Please, you can’t be any worse than pops’ singing in the shower. He’ll go through whole musicals in there, tries to sing multiple parts at once. It’s hellish.” Izuku giggled, hand flying to cover up his mouth.

“Okay, maybe not that bad, but still not anything terrific.” Hitoshi bent to pick up the pillows that had been lost to the floor earlier, Izuku making to help him just a second later.

“I think I’ll be the judge of that. I can play something while you sing?”

The other boy nodded, smiling brightly. “I think I’d like that.”

“Great. We should probably eat first. After we finish cleaning up, of course. What do you want?”

“Oh, I don’t mind anything, I’ll be happy with whatever.” Hitoshi sighed. Damnit, I’m asking you because I don’t know what to make! Come on, Izuku!

“How about kurume, then?” The freckled boy hummed in agreement. Hitoshi smiled, leaning over to kiss his boyfriend on the cheek before he waltzed off with the blankets, leaving a very pink Izuku in his wake.

Once they had finished picking up the mess of pillows and blankets left around and had lunch, the pair retreated back to Shinsou’s room and sat close together on the bed. Hitoshi was scrolling through his playlists, searching for any song that both he knew how to play and Izuku knew the words to.

“God, why don’t you know any music?”

“I know a lot of music! Just not much with words. And none that you know.” He leaned over the taller boy’s shoulder, looking to see if he recognized anything. “What’s Two Trucks?” Hitoshi’s cheeks flushed a light pink.

“Nothing important. Ugh, I need a break from this.” He tossed his phone off to the side. Izuku tilted his head.

“So, um, what do you want to do?” Hitoshi looked to the other boy out of the corner of his eye, face still tinted.

“Can you close your eyes for a second?”

“If you put an ice cube in my shirt again or something I will never forgive you.” Hitoshi laughed, running his fingers through his hair.

“Come on, that was one time! Just trust me, freckles.” Izuku blushed right on cue, shutting his eyes. Hitoshi smiled softly, leaning over and putting his hands on his boyfriend’s shoulders. Izuku tensed.

“Hitoshi…” he warned.

“What? My hands are empty, come on! Just relax.” The freckled boy did so, perhaps a bit more tense than he had been before, but it was better than nothing. Hitoshi closed the distance, kissing the green-haired boy quickly. He huffed out a little laugh when he felt the other boy’s face heat up.

“Really? Goodness, you’re so easy to fluster.” Izuku squeaked.

“Hi-Hitoshi, you can’t just d-do that and then make fun of me right after!” The purple-haired boy shrugged.

“Just watch me. Speaking of, you can open your eyes now.” He did just that, sneaking up through his eyelashes at the taller boy. Hitoshi’s face was dusted pink.

“Was that… was that okay?” Izuku giggled, Hitoshi catching his hand and lacing their fingers together before the other boy could cover his smile. The shorter boy stretched upwards, trying and failing to reach his boyfriend’s height.

“Ugh, why do you have to be so tall?” The purple-haired boy laughed, bending to reach Izuku’s level and pressing their foreheads together.

“Why do you have to be so short? This isn’t doing wonders for my back, y’know.” Izuku huffed, his nose wrinkling as he looked to the side. Hitoshi smirked and kissed the other boy again.

“Come on, freckles, don’t be like that. We can always get you a step stool or something. Or maybe heels?” Izuku rolled his eyes, shoving Hitoshi’s face away from his playfully and meeting him with a fiery spirit in his green eyes.

“K-keep that up, and you’ll stoop low enough for me to reach in no time.” Hitoshi’s laugh rang out through the room, crisp and clear. Izuku smiled to himself.

“I suppose so, but for now…” He pulled the other boy closer to him and peppered kisses over his cheeks, forehead, and hair. Izuku flushed deeper with each one, laughing and trying weakly to pull away.

“Hit-Hitoshi, come on, st-stop it!” he sputtered between bouts of laughter. He squirmed under the taller boy’s hold. Hitoshi smirked and pulled him closer.

“I could, but now honestly, where’s the fun in that, Izuku?” He kissed him on the lips once more, the freckled teen kissing back and the guitar temporarily forgotten.

They were interrupted eventually by Antidisestablishmentarianism coming back into the room and demanding to be fed once again. Hitoshi shooed her out, annoyed, and shutting the door behind him.

“Alright, back to the playlist. Um… have you ever heard of Fleetwood Mac?” Izuku beamed, bouncing excitedly.

“Yes! What songs do you know?” Hitoshi grinned, excited to have finally found a band they both knew.

“Um… Songbird, The Chain, Dreams…”

“Never Going Back Again?”

“Yeah, I know that one. Wanna do that one then?” Izuku nodded quickly.

“Yes! That’s one of my favorites. I’m telling you, though, I’m not a good singer.”

“And I’m telling you that you can’t get worse than pops belting Les Mis in the shower. Come on, I’ll start warming up.” The purple-haired boy stood and took his guitar off the stand, starting up a digital tuner and plucking the strings.

Finished with tuning and warming up, Hitoshi nudged his boyfriend, who had started playing with Akiko somewhere in the process.

“Hey, you ready?” Izuku looked up, smiling, and nodded.

“Yeah, let’s start!” Hitoshi started to play, popping the strings to create the plucky melody Izuku had heard a million times before. The freckled boy came in on cue, joining the song quietly.

She broke down and let me in

Made me see where I've been

Been down one time

Been down two times

I'm never going back again…

Hitoshi turned to look at Izuku, violet eyes wide. What had Izuku been talking about, his voice was fucking angelic! No good at singing my ass, he thought with a smirk. The boy’s voice came out half an octave higher than the original song, but he still managed to make it fit the high notes of the melody and keep the style of the original.

You don't know what it means to win

Come down and see me again

Been down one time

Been down two times

I'm never going back again…

Izuku stayed focused on the cat at his feet, humming along with the guitar in the gaps between lyrics. Soon enough, the song was finished, and he looked up to see Hitoshi with a beautiful, perfect, how did he ever get this lucky smile on his face. He slung the strap off his shoulder and laid it to the side.

“What the fuck are you on? That was gorgeous.” He grinned wider when Izuku turned pink, avoiding his eyes.

“N-not really, I can’t match the pitch at all a-and-“ Hitoshi silenced him with a peck on the cheek, making him turn an even more vibrant shade.

“No, shut up, it was perfect. We should do another, do you know any more of their songs?” Izuku looked shyly at him from under his lashes.

“Um, I like Gold Dust Woman and Landslide…” Hitoshi grinned, picking up his guitar again for the next song.

“I know both. Gold Dust Woman first?” Izuku nodded, smiling a little. Both boys failed to notice Hotoshi’s phone buzzing on top of the nightstand.

Hizashi turned the key in the lock, him and Shouta stepping into the apartment. Immediately he recognized the song Landslide- was Hitoshi playing the guitar again? It had been months since he picked it up last. He smiled, hanging up his coat alongside Shouta’s. Before his husband could call out to the two teenagers, Hizashi heard a voice that he distantly registered as Midoriya’s ringing out alongside the guitar and smacked a hand over Shouta’s mouth, pressing a finger to his lips and signing for him to listen.

Well, I've been 'fraid of changin'

'Cause I've built my life around you

But time makes you bolder

Even children get older

And I'm gettin' older, too...

Holy shit, who was this kid? He sounded like a different person when he sung - well, maybe that was just the power of Stevie Nicks, but still! If he didn’t know the identities of everyone in the house he never would have guessed that Midoriya was the one behind the singing. Hizashi turned to Shouta and signed,

“Holy shit, I need to get this kid on Put Your Hands Up.” The black-haired man raised an eyebrow and signed back.

“You think he would? Please, he’d have a heart attack before he even made it through the door.” Hizashi shrugged just as the song ended, laughter bubbling through the door not a heartbeat afterwards. Shouta looked to the closed door, a mischievous glint in his eyes that Hizashi would’ve missed if he hadn’t known the other man for 15 years.

“We’re back.” Maybe the yelp that came from Midoriya would have happened no matter what circumstance they announced their return under, but the blonde still pouted and smacked Shouta lightly on the arm.

His husband was just no fun sometimes.
