Work Text:
Namjoon liked his friends, he really did. And he tried to show them that the best he could: from helping them with math and providing them with music equipment for their very loud and very awesome parties to trying to not destroy their furniture (Jin especially hated whenever he broke something in the his flat). But of course, there were times he despised them from the bottom of his heart. And this time was exactly like that.
Namjoon quietly sat down on the reserved table at a high-class café. This is going to be so awkward. His date (blind date) wasn’t even here and he already felt like leaving. He was so going to kill Hoseok (Jin was involved in this too but Jin is too scary). And Yoongi will get it too for not stopping them. But first, he has to survive this thing right here without fleeing for his life.
The time of the meeting was only minutes away and Namjoon was feeling more and more nervous. His social skills weren’t stellar (though he didn’t have it as bad as Yoongi) so he tended to embarrass himself greatly on dates. He was also terribly clumsy and usually ended up spilling something on his date’s white shirt or new skirt. And sometimes, he managed to hit both. He was good like that.
As a last-minute attempt to save himself from at least the most obvious dangers he moved all the breakable objects on the table further away from him to lessen chances of him destroying anything.
Right when he was done someone stood by his table and cleared his throat.
„Um, excuse me, are you Namjoon?”
Namjoon got startled by the deep voice and quickly stood up to greet the other male. But, of course, he stood up too fast and his chair fell down to the floor with a loud noise. Of fucking course. Seriously, fuck that chair. He’s fine with being single forever as long as he doesn’t have to further interact with people (damn it, he was starting to sound like Yoongi).
A chuckle took him out of his thoughts.
„Wow, never had a reaction like that to my entrance.”
Namjoon turned a deeper shade of red (yeah, he was fine with single forever) and picked up the chair. „Sorry.”
„No, it’s fine. I’m Taehyung by the way.” He offered his hand which Namjoon accepted and happily sat down. First part over.
He needed to be optimistic – it’s going to be fine from now on. Taehyung didn’t seem to be bothered by his awkwardness and immediately started asking him about what he studied and his hobbies. Yeah, those questions were harmless and Namjoon calmed himself a bit. They ordered and everything seemed to go quite well. Taehyung was nice, funny and really good-looking.
So, all was fine and dandy. Until of course it wasn’t. Of course.
It was when Namjoon dropped a spoon from his coffee (thank god it was just the spoon and that it went in a relatively harmless direction away from both his and Taehyung’s t-shirts). Since the waiter was busy, Taehyung kindly offered to go wash the it in the bathroom. It wasn’t really necessary (really nice nonetheless). When he left though, Namjoon at least had a time to hide the wet stain from the water he spilled earlier and had been trying to surreptitiously wipe with napkins throughout the conversation. Even if it was going well, he didn’t have that much of a good feeling from the date and he couldn’t figure out why. He felt like Taehyung was putting on some kind of facade. He seemed weirdly wooden and kept glancing at his hands. His answers seemed almost rehearsed.
Though that could be explained by him just being nervous and Namjoon was reading too much into this. Which wouldn’t be the first time.
After a few minutes Taehyung came back. He gave him the spoon back and sat down with a smile. „So, what were we talking about?” he threw Namjoon another charming smile and put his hands on the table.
Namjoon smiled (slightly more uncertainly) back. „Oh, you were going to ask me about something.”
„Right,” Taehyung looked at his hands and slowly his expression changed into a look of confusion then horror. „So, um… right.” He mumbled more to himself still looking at his hands.
„Is there something wrong?” Namjoon didn’t understand what happened so suddenly.
„Uh, no… no. Absolutely not. I just- I mean- What’s your favourite tree?”
„I… a tree? I mean- I never really thought about that.” Namjoon was quite confused.
„Oh. But you really should. I mean, trees are like really important.”
„Right, sure. I will. Give me second.”
Silence fell over them. It was quite uncomfortable. What went wrong? Namjoon was quickly thinking about some other topic to talk about but his mind only supplied him with different trees he knew and which was scientifically less in danger of getting hit by a lightning. Which wasn’t very helpful. Like at all.
Taehyung cleared his throat. „Um, then what about ooze? What colour do you think a galactic ooze should have?”
„O-ooze? Like slime?”
„Yeah…” he seemed to regret the question immediately.
This was so absurd. Namjoon couldn’t help himself he just started laughing. In the process he managed to knock down the glass of water which shattered on the floor. That, of course, grabbed the attention of the whole café and Namjoon blushed bright red at the sudden looks they got caused by his clumsiness. Now Taehyung will definitely leave and-
„Goodness you have dimples! It looks so cute!” Taehyung smiled at him completely ignoring the broken glass and the stares. Namjoon turned even deeper shade of crimson.
The waiter sent them a look wishing them a slow and painful death (she did look like she didn’t sleep for at least a week) so Namjoon suggested they leave. Taehyung looked disappointed (though that might be wishful thinking on Namjoon’s side) but he offered to pay nonetheless.
It was when they walked out that Taehyung turned shy (and adorable) and looked unsurely at Namjoon. Namjoon found himself smiling. When did this date turn into him wanting to flee the premises into him wanting to spent the rest of the day with this strange cute boy?
„Can we see each other again? I mean… you can say no. I just-“
„Sure.” Namjoon smiled brightly once again showing his dimples.
In the end it didn’t go so badly, Namjoon thought („Of course it didn’t. I arranged it.” „Shut up, Hoseok.”).
It was later that he learned that Taehyung really sucked at first dates too. Apparently, he always asked his dates quite random questions ranging from favourite planets to hypothetical scenarios of them living together in a post-apocalyptic world. The dates usually left within the first ten minutes.
His friends – Jungkook and Jimin – finally set him up with Namjoon and despite his protests, wrote him a cheat-code on his hands to help the date run smoother. When he washed it off while cleaning Namjoon’s spoon, he panicked. And so the best colour for galactic ooze happened.
Which was definitely green with golden sparkles as Namjoon and Taehyung decided on their fourth date. Of course it was.
