It’s not always about victory

Summary:

Hawks always wanted to go to camp Halfblood. Now he gets to, after a little debacle involving three cyclops, a broken wing and blue flames.

Or

A Dabihawks centric Percy Jackson Au where both of them have secrets and a dark past.

Notes:

This is a short teaser I wrote for the mini bang on the beloved but cursed Dabihawks server, thanks to everyone who helped create the idea for this. Please keep in mind that I am not a native English speaker and if you find any mistakes please tell me so that I can improve, any sort of critic is welcome.

The awesome kiwiliko on tumblr drew this amazing artpiece for this au.

Work Text:

For Dabi, the day had started normal.
Getting up and out of bed had been a pain, as always. Though today not only because his muscles were aching, but also because of his still sleeping siblings whom he shares the cabin with. Many of the Hephaestus kids were long sleepers and only woke up when the horn called for breakfast. Natsuo was sprawled on the floor, he had fallen out of his bed again. Fumyumi was a ball of blankets. She had probably gotten cold over night, and Shoutos bed was abandoned. Their youngest had gone out on a quest a few days ago and would only be expected back in a week. The other 4 Hephaestus kids they shared the cabin with were also still asleep, Norman snoring loudly as Dabi climbed over the mountains of stuff laying around. There were machine parts among tools and clothing, all spread across the cabin floor.

By the time he had gotten ready and out of the cabin Dabi went on with his morning exercises. Joined by Twice, a Jaunus kid who says he likes Camp Halfblood more than New Rome currently living in the Hermès cabin, and Himiko Toga, an overactive ADHD Hermes kid. After about half an hour the other people of their friend group joined them. Magne, one of Aphrodite's daughters and an older campers, and a son of Hecate everyone just calls Mr. Compress. He used to do magic tricks for the smaller kids when they were sad until they started calling him that, after that the name just stuck. The last to show up was Spinner, a guy that looks like a Lizard and is somehow related to Python, the dragon of Delhi. They spared together, well Dabi, Compress and Magne did, while Spinner and Toga mostly joked around. Until Toga looks around wondering aloud, "Has someone seen Tomura? I haven’t seen him and Kurogiri since monday."

"He’s currently with his dad, I think. Kurogiri mentioned something if I recall correctly." Compress, distracted by Togas question gets promptly takled to the ground by Magne, falling with a loud thump.

Dabi and Spinner stop the hand to hand sparring and watch as Magne and Compress roll around on the ground, while Toga just groans, "I’m so jealous of him, Hades is like, the Jackpot when it comes to glodly parents, and for Tomu it’s even better because Persephone likes him! How is this fair? He even lets him keep his ghost butler!"

Twice snorts, "I don’t think Kurogiri is Tomura's Butler, more like babysitter."

"Yeah, you’re right, good point. That doesn’t make it better though, why can’t all gods be like Hades?" she takes out her phone to take a video of Magne and Compress, "I mean my dad isn’t that bad. At least he talked to me like, two times already, but what I’m saying is why cant they do that more often? I thought after the wars stuff was supposed to change."

Spinner shakes his head at her, a small grin on his face, "You’re just jealous cuz you want to meet the ghosts, Himiko. An besides, at least you got Hermes."

"So what? Ghosts are cool! Tomu said that most of them look like they just died but more transparent, I want to see how that soooo badly." she is whining now and Dabi sighs.

"Be positive, at least Hermes hasn’t tried to kill you. I heard Norman was attacked by his dad and got away just in time. Better no attention than... that."

"But-" Toga is cut of by the horn, signaling breakfast and Spinner shakes his head again.

"Alright guys, how about we all agree that most Gods are shit and not worth their title and go get something to eat, I’m starving."
______________________

Seven hours later, Dabi was just coming from training with a few younger campers as he notices a crowd at the camp border. Something weird is going on.

When he arrives at the top of the hill he uses his elbows to get through the crowd, it doesn't take much for them to let him pass. They all know that the older campers could probably do more to help, and the members of their little group have established a reputation for themselves.

Older Camper in this case means an eighteen year old. Halfbloods do not get very old so having someone that got past age seventeen among them is something unusual. Even with New Rome and Camp Halfblood now connected, most older kids go to New Rome to study. Not Dabi, he hates the amount of rules that he has to live up to in New Rome, and he always preferred Camp over it. Compress once said that it wasn’t so bad and then Twice butted in and told them that was bullshit.

Speaking of Twice, when Dabi finally gets to the first row of the crowd he is there, and unlike everyone else he isn’t just staring. Twice is fighting something, or several somethings, not so far away from the border of the camp. It doesn’t take Dabi long to get an impression of the situation: there are three cyclops fighting against Twice, who had probably told the other campers to stay inside the border. As Dabi takes another look he sees that Twice is not fighting alone. With him are two other people, one of them a boy about Shoutos age, with features that look distinctively bird like, black hair and a nasty gash on his forehead. He looks lifeless, probably (hopefully) unconscious and is being carried by the other guy. Said guy keeps weaving in and out of view, ducking behind trees for cover.

While Dabi can’t make out many features of guy number two besides weird looking blonde hair, he can see the bright red wings. One of them hanging useless to the ground and the other one protectively wrapped around the boy. But their appearance isn’t what matters right now, while Twice is a good fighter he shouldn’t fight alone angainst these monsters. Dabi just needs a weapon, since cyclops are fireproof. There. One of the Campers was holding a short sword, that would do.

"Give me your sword."

"Wha-?" Dabi takes the sword out of the surprised guys hands. "But Twice said to stay in Camp!"

"Fuck Twice!"

And with that Dabi is off. Taking on the first cyclops isn’t very hard, they are not that intelligent, but the sword is unbalanced and he isn’t used to it. Dabi really preferes to fight with his fire or a bow. He’s more of a long range person. Once the first cyclops dissolves into golden dust Dabi takes in his surroundings once again. Twice is still fighting but now only one of the remaining cyclops is paying attention to him. The other is currently charging at the two newcomers.

"Shit." As a reflex Dabi raises his hand and lets out a huge burst of blue Flames, engulfing the cyclops in it. He can feel the surprised stare of guy two on him, but he is currently more focused on the angry cyclops now charging at him. While his fire hadn’t done much damage it had made the monster angry. Dabis flames burn hotter than normal fire and he can see that his opponents skin is singed and an angry red, so it did do something. He ducks under the blow that comes for his head, adjusts his stance and swings at the cyclops’ stomach. It doesn’t dodge and the sword cuts deep into the flesh. Now Dabi attacks from behind and a few moments later this monster dissolves into dust too.

He turns around when he hears a pained scream. Twice. The last cyclops seems to be more of a threat than the others and is currently holding Twice up by his throat.

Dabi feels dizzy, he is the grumpy one in his friend group, the one who would distance himself and never talk about what’s bothering him or open up about his feelings, but seeing one of his friends like this makes him angry. (He would never admit it, but he is scared for his friend too) Twice is coughing and clawing at the hands holding him.

Move, Dabi needs to move.

Before he can actually do something other than taking a few steps, something bright red flies past his face, barely missing him and hits the cyclops in the back of his head. Golden dust coats the air as it dissolves and the only things left are Twice coughing on the ground and a red feather now slowly gliding through the air.

Dabi turns around. Behind him stands the guy with the wings, sill supporting the boy with one wing and arm, the other hanging down and his stance tells Dabi that it was this guy who had thrown the feather like a knife.

"We need to get you guys into camp. To the infarmary."

_________________________

Turns out the injured boy is Tokoyami Fumikage, a son of Hecate and Compress’ half brother. He really is only twelve years old, just like Shouto. The other guy though, he is weird. His name is Hawks, or so Dabi is told by Magne who picked up on the gossip in the Aphrodite cabin a day after the debacle. They are currently on their way to a meeting with Chiron because they are the representatives of their respective cabins. Compress would probably join them later.

Most people are already there, the only ones still missing are Nico, Tomuras older brother, his boyfriend Will from the Apollo cabin and Chiron himself. What is odd though is the guy Magne and Dabi had just been talking about standing in a corner of the room. Dabi eyes him suspiciously.

"So whats this meeting even supposed to be about?" he asks. Magne has walked torwards a few other campers who are talking to Compress, but now turns back to him.

"I think it’s about the new ones and the increasing of monster activity recently. Did no one tell you?" Dabi doesn’t answer. He usually doesn’t talk to many people outside his friend group. Always keeping away from his siblings, talking to them wasn’t something he was planning in the future. To them he was just the weirdo with blue flames who appeared 5 years ago with some even weirder girl in tow and a mass of burn scars. When he came to camp these back then people had taken some time to get used to it, and sometimes it still scared the newbies, but now most people respect him. Some brave ones even ask him for advice sometimes, and he had taken on teaching when he isn’t on a mission. It is fun to torture the kids with exhausting exercises.

A cold shudder runs down his spine and he feels a presence behind him. Turning around he sees Nico di Angelo standing in front of him, looking tired as always.
"How’s Shiggy? Did he talk to you about the weird ghost we met on our last quest?"

The ghost king hums, "I took care of it, nothing is going to haunt you if you were afraid of it."

"Haha very funny." Dabi elbows him. "If you’re looking for your boyfriend, he isn’t here."

Nico makes a dismissing gesture with his hand, "Oh Will is coming in a bit, who’s the guy with the wings?"

"A new one, though I don’t know if he’s a halfblood or something else, like spinner. Magne says his name is Hawks or some shit. He came yesterday, together with some Hecate kid and 3 Cyclops. Though Twice and I took care of those."

"You mean you and Hawks took care of them, cuz Twice didn’t kill shit." Katsuki suddenly butts in.

"Shut it brat, you aren’t even supposed to be here, get out." Nico makes a shoo motion with his hand and Katsuki obliges, knowing that antagonizing one of the veterans is never a good thing. "Is Twice okay?"

"Yeah, he got a nasty bruise around his neck but it's nothing that can't be fixed with ambrosia." Dabi grunts, "The kid is not entirely wrong either, birdy over there really saved Twices’ ass before I could even move. Still don’t know how he did it." Nico eyes him questioningly, but doesn’t ask because in that moment Chiron and Will enter the room. Will takes his place next to Nico and Chiron steps in front of the ping pong table that still has snacks all over it. Surprisingly they are not all gone yet.

"Alright everyone, let's get to it. I called you all to this meeting because of the alarming rise in monster activity and because of our new camper here." He mentions in the direction of the bird guy. "Do you want to introduce yourself?"

Dabi almost snorts, this is like in one of those books where the girl that just came new to the school has to introduce herself in front of the whole class. Not that he has read any of those.

"Sure thing. Uhh my name's Hawks, nice to meet you all." the guy waves aimlessly and a few chuckles can be heard. Hawks grins at that and continues, "Thanks for the healing and treatment and all that. 'Cuz of the Apollo kids my wing is fully healed, and yes, my wings are real." he looks at Chiron as if to ask if there is anything else and Dabi can only repeat his earlier parallel to the book situation.

"Who’s your goodly parent?" Magne asks. She is standing right next to Dabi, arms crossed and looks very imitating right now. Though Dabi knows her and can see the curiosity in her eyes.

"Nike."

That name throws Dabi out of his musings, the other campers look as surprised as he feels. Shouts fill the room and at least four campers are gaping like fish. Magne to his left is openly staring, not knowing how to comprehend, eyes wide while Nico to his right is probably the most collected, right after Chiron. Dabi himself tries not to let his surprise show. Nike is not known for having many kids because they are mostly targeted and captured for their victory streak. Just like she was, and to Dabis knowledge the last one died about 160 years ago.

"Quiet down everyone, I know this is unusual but we are to welcome Hawks like we welcome everyone else: with open arms." Chiron makes shushing motions "Thank you, Hawks, you can either stay for a bit and listen, or wait outside. I will later appoint someone to show you around."

"I think I’m gonna listen, Thanks." he sits back down, though the chair is the wrong way around, laying his arms across the backrest of the it. Dabi concludes that the guy has probably a hard time sitting on chairs with high backrests. Seems complicated with the wings.

"Then lets move on shall we, we need to discuss the monsters."

Dabi sighs, leaning back in his chair, this is going to take a while.

Hawks did not know things would turn out like this, not that he is complaining. He just never would have guessed that there are actually good things that can happen to him.

Wow that was dark, he should probably stop thinking like this.

Stumbling across Tokoyami while on a mission had been the best thing that could have happened to him though. Getting to Camp Halfblood was even better. Though his wing had been fucked up in the process, but at least he is away from them. Though, currently, he is dying of boredom. The meeting with the highranking campers, or whatever Chiron had called them, is currently coming to a close (finally). All the snacks on the ping pong table are gone, and he would be able to go make a tour around Camp soon. Hawks realises that he had a place to stay now. Now people knew who he was, now they couldn’t take him away anymore. A small smile spreads across his face.

"Hawks!" Chiron stands before him. Huh looks like they wrapped up their meeting. "Come with me, I will assign someone who can show you around." Nodding, Hawks falls into step next to the centaur. Around them campers leave the house and they follow.

Chiron seems to look for someone until he calls out: "Nico!" a man with black hair and really intense eye bags turns towards them. If Hawks had to guess, he would say the guy is about 30, which is unusual for a halfblood.

"Sorry Chiron, gotta go, Dad said to come back right after the meeting, something important about the ghosts."

"Ah of course my boy, then go. Tell Tomura to be back by tomorrow, we will be playing capture the Flag."

"Will do, see ya." and with that the guy turns around again, and goes off into the direction of, what Hawks thinks, are the cabins, tugging some blonde dude who Hawks knows is an Apollo kid along with him. Chiron next to him sighs, looking around contemplative and Hawks wonders why he hadn’t done this when everyone was in the room with them and not now, when everyone is scattered around.

"Ah, but of course." Chiron seems to have spotted someone and is now moving towards them. Hawks just follows along.

It only takes him a few meters to realise that they are heading in the direction of a group of three people, one of them is the woman who asked him about his mother, the second he doesn’t recognize and the third is a guy with scars all over his face and arms. He was with them in the meeting just a few minutes ago. Hawks is sure of that, and it’s definitely not because he was staring at the guy every few seconds. What? No? That’s just because of his scars. They look cool and his fire had been impressive in the battle with the cyclops. That is all.

Yeah right.

"…. That’s not very positive news guys!" as they get into hearing range Hawks can make out that the one he doesn’t recognize seems to be worried over something. The other two just shrug at his wild gesticulations.

"Just tell it the others, Natsuo." the guy with the scars quips. He doesn’t seem very bothered. "Hi Chiron."

"Chiron, what's going on?" the woman smiles at them, up close she doesn’t look as intimidating as when he met her earlier. Or it is just because she isn’t trying to be intimidating right now. Whatever.

"Ah yes, Magne, Dabi, Natsuo, can one of you please show Hawks here around?"

"Well you see, I still gotta inform my cabin about the meeting so I can't but Dabi here just told Nastuo everything so he can do it while Nastuo tells the other Hephaestus kids." she is grinning at them, "Sorry for the harshness earlier by the way. I’m Magne, representative for the Aphrodite Cabin."

"I’m Hawks, but you knew that." he can't help but grin back, she just has that aura around her.

"That’s wonderful, thank you Dabi." Chiron concludes and before anyone can react he is already on his way. Didn’t even let the guy say anything to his new role as Hawks’ guide. He feels kind of sorry for him.

apparently being used to it the guy heaves a sigh and closes his eyes. His scars look even cooler up close and the staples plus the black hair and the coat make him look edgy. He brings up his hand and rubbed his temples. Magne just slaps him on the back, "Alright guys, gotta go now, the others are probably waiting for the news. You coming Natsuo?"

"Yeah sure. Your wings look really cool dude." and off they go. Hawks looks after them.

"Thanks I guess." he mumbles, though he is pretty sure Natsuo can't hear him anymore and his attention shifts back to the other man in front of him. Dabi sighs again and then opens his eyes.

Holy shit.

Hawks gulps and grins at him not really sure what to say. All while Dabi just stares at him with an intensity that makes him almost shift, almost. He learned how to withhold the urge to do that a long time ago.

“Okay Birdie, let’s not waste more time.” without any other comment Dabi turns around and trots off. Leaving behind a speechless Hawks.

Birdie?!

When he catches himself he runs to keep up with Dabi.

Man this Guy has long legs.

But Hawks is fast and in no time he is next to Dabi again. "Thank you by the way," Dabi just grunts, "for saving me and Tokoyami out there. I’m pretty sure we would have been cyclopsfood if you and your other friend didn’t turn up." they wouldn’t have. Hawks knows that. If Dabi and the guy, who he was told is Twice, hadn’t shown up, he would have run all the way to the camp or fought the cyclops with one of his longer feathers as swords. He would have won.

Dabi glances at him, then just nods.

Not a talker then, but Hawks can work with that.

"I always wanted to come here, I’ve heard so much about this place!" this time Hawks thinks he can see curiosity in the guys eyes when he looks at him, but it's gone just a moment later. Hawks just proceeds to talk, "I’m so happy to finally be here, like I always thought I would die before I got the chance." he laughs, playing it as a joke and maybe Dabi can see that is isn’t, because he doesn’t laugh.

"Theres the arena." he points somewhere to their left and Hawks can see what is in fact an arena and… is that a climbing wall with lava running down the sides? That’s intense. Not that his own training hadn’t been as intense as this, because it was far worse, but still.

Don’t think about it.

"Looks fun, do you guys just train there or are there events too?"

"Training, a few contests and fake battles, buels when someone challenges someone else or was just really stupid. Sometimes theres bets.”

"Define really stupid." Dabi gives him a look and Hawks laughs again. "Alright, alright but what-"

"Don’t ask. You really don’t want to know." he turns again and this time Hawks keeps up. "There is also a campfire in the evening, the whole fucking cliché with signing and telling stories and all that shit." he doesn’t seem to like the ides of that but Hawks smiles nonetheless.

"Sounds like fun, any other events I should know about?"

"The horn signals when it's time to eat, you have to be at your assigned training lessons and tomorrow’s capture the flag planned." he sounds very disinterested in all of it. "There are the training grounds for when the arena is used and archery." Hawks looks where he is pointing at and can see in fact multiple targets for archery in the distance. Nodding in acknowledgement he turns to Dabi again.

"What’s capture the flag?" Dabi stares at him for a few second before huffing, if he didn’t know better, Hawks would think he is trying not to laugh.

"Seriously birdbrain? You don’t know what capture the flag is?"

"No, that’s why I’m asking. Also, why can’t you just use my normal name?"

"Capture the flag is the shitty game we play here to keep the campers entertained. There are two teams, blue and red, each one has a flag and their territory on one side of the river in the forest over there." he nods in the direction of a forest at the far end of camp. "Don’t go in there alone though, that would be really fucking stupid. Every Team hides their flag somewhere in their territory and the other team has to get it and carry it across the river into their territory, whoever does that first, wins. Should be easy to understand, even for a birdbrain like you."

Hawks ignores the insult and just nods. This should be interesting enough.

That evening, when they all sit together at the campfire Hawks thinks back on the rest of the tour. Dabi had been relatively silent and even when he talked it was full of swearing or insults. But Hawks had never felt attacked, the way Dabi said the things were just not right, the venom in it was missing. Now the scared man is nowhere in sight while the other campers sit around the fire. The apollo cabin is singing and some other campers have joined in.
Hawks had befriended some of the others, there is this really cool girl who is wearing mostly rabbit themed clothes. He had seen her kicking ass in the arena after Dabi had dropped him off at a very dusty and abandoned Nike cabin. They had instantly clicked and she is now sitting next to him.

This is nice.

The next day the first thing Hawks does is visiting Tokoyami. He is still recovering and happy to see him, apparently the infarmary gets boring after a while. They chat until the horn signals breakfast and then walk to the big house with the help of a very nice Apollo kid.

After that, everything goes smoothly. He meets a few more people and traines a bit. Then lunch rolls around and right after he is confused to find everyone crowded in front of the big house.

Miruko grins at him when he approaches.

“Ready for your first capture the flag?” ah, right. Dabi had said something like this yesterday, had he not? Alright, he can do this.

________________________________

Hawks team fights viciously and thanks to his wings they have a huge advantage. That is, until he gets almost scorched by blue flames suddenly shooting from beneath him.

"Holy Fuck!"

He barely dodges the next set of flames, almost dropping the flag of the red team he is carrying. On the ground he can make out a familiar figure and remembers where he had seen these flames before. In his head he watches the cyclops getting burned by them and shudders.

Why does everything with this guy have to be so cool? Well, not literally but-

He dodges another attack that barely misses the tip of his feathers.

Come on, where is the river?

An arrow flies past him. Why did they have to put the Apollo cabin and Dabi on one team again?

There, the river! With a few powerful beats of his wings he is across it and tumbles to the ground. Some Teammates are waiting for him, helping him stand and cheering. Some of his feathers have been singed.

That was a really close call.

"Did you not learn how to aim properly?" a very rude sounding voice interrupts his thoughts, it comes from the other side of the river. He looks for the voice, and his eyes find the source quickly. It is silent now, not even birds chirping. A girl just shoved Dabi and is now threatening him, or at least she tries, because Dabi looks not impressed at all. Until now, the guy had always been slouching, making himself looking smaller than he actually is, thanks to his coat you also can't make out his actual statue. But now, with only sport clothing on and a bit of armor it is clearly visible that he is not as much of a twig as one would think. Now he is standing tall, towering over the poor girl and glaring her down.

"As far as I’m concerned I wasn’t the only one who fucking missed the bird. Weren’t you one of the archers?" His voice is as cold as ice and Hawks suppresses a shudder, "I saw what you did, kid, your stance was wrong and if you keep holding the bow that low you will never actually hit something, not even and overgrown chicken like him." He makes a motion in Hawks direction.

"And you could?" her voice is shaking, but Hawks has to pay her some respect for even being able to speak while being subjected to that glare.

Dabi looks at her for a few long seconds. Then he claps his hands loudly, scaring a few birds out of the trees that surround the clearing they are standing in. Without looking up he takes away the girls bow, three of her arrow and shoots, one after the other.

All three hit. One after another a bird comes down from the sky, landing in the clearing between them. Dabi shoves the bow back into the girls hands.

"My fire is long range, but it's also wide spreading and glaringly obvious. Everyone with a survival instinct runs away from it. An Arrow is harder to spot, shouldn’t announce itself in form of heat and thus, should have a better chance at hitting the target. Learn how to shoot before you criticize me again." He turns on his heel and vanishes between the trees.

Gods, that was hot.

_____________________________

This time Hawks sees it when Dabi vanishes before the Campfire starts. He heads for the beach, obviously to be alone and obviously, Hawks follows him.

Dabi stands there when Hawks sets his feet onto the sand, the faint glow of the campfire still visible behind him. How is he supposed to start a conversation now? Why did he follow him? What was he thinking?

He probably wasn’t.

Right. There's that. There is a faint glow radiating of Dabi. "Are you smoking?" Dabi turns around. He looks at Hawks for a few seconds, with that emotionless stare of his.

"No." he in fact, is not smoking. The glow had been his phone that Hawks had mistaken for his flames. "What do you want, Birdbrain?"

"Nothing, I just- uhh" he doesn't know what to say. "The sea and the stars are beautiful tonight."

? You can't say something like this to a guy like Dabi!

He is going to think of him as weird, tell him to shove off, with no chance to talk to him ever again. But to his surprise Dabi doesn’t do that. He just turns to look at the sea and then the stars. They are especially bright tonight, as there is no moon in sight.

"Yeah, I suppose they are." there is still no emotion in that sentence, but Hawks considers the fact that he didn’t tell him to go away a success. Dabi sits down and in that moment, with the faint glow of the campfire still lingering on him, Hawks realises how pretty he looks. Many would probably see the scars as ugly, but to Hawks Dabi just looks incredibly beautiful.

Breathe.

Right, he almost forgot how to do that.

"Do you want to stand around all night, Birdbrain?" Dabi isn’t looking at him and Hawks could swear that he is a bit red around the nose. Huh when did that happen? Probably just the lighting. He grins at Dabi and sits down next to him. One of his wings hits Dabis back, though he doesn’t seem to mind. They sit in silence for a while, no one knows what to say.

"What do I have to do for you to tell me were the scars come from?"

Stupid question.

Dabi tenses, "You don’t want to know that, birdie."

Huh. Interesting.

"I do actually, maybe one day you will tell me and until then, I will just get on your nerves." Hawks grins at Dabi as he turns to glare at him, "I have a few scars myself actually, fights with monsters and all that stuff…" he trails of, not knowing if this would be appropriate.

"Do people ever tell you to stop talking?"

"They do, but I usually don’t listen, or I’m busy talking." now Hawks is grinning again, "What you did after capture the flag was amazing by the way. Really badass too, and you almost got me during the game. Some of feathers have black edges now." He can see a small smirk on Dabi's face and takes it as a good sign. "This girl really had no idea what she was doing though, there were a few arrows that I saw during the Game, but none of them came even close, like, they were all at least a few meters away. But your fire came really close. It scared the shit out of me." Dabi is chuckling. It’s almost silent but Hawks can still hear it. He grins.

Holy shit this guy is everything he ever dreamed of.

____________________________________

Nights like this repeat themselves. They sit and talk, well, Hawks talks and Dabi mostly listens. Hawks talks about everything and nothing in particular, about his day, things he experienced, places he traveled to.
One night when they sit at the beach again, Hawks talking animatedly, gesturing with his hand and the stars shining down on them, Dabi can't look away.

Huh he really had grown fond of the Bird, hadn’t he?

Hawks pauses, “You alright Baconboy?”

Dabi has had a shitty day. Really shitty. But now, sitting here, he just can't look away. He can’t stop the small smile tugging at the edges of his lips either.

“Yeah, I’m good. I just wanted to tell you something.” Hawks shifts to better look at him and his wing his Dabis back. He doesn’t mind and still can't look away.

Fuck.

“Have you ever heard of the name Touya Todoroki?”
