If he was being honest, Shouto didn’t know why he agreed to this in the first place.
If he absolutely had to pinpoint a reason, he’d put it down to Uraraka and Midoriya’s near constant goading over the past week. The “Come on, you know you want to”’s from Uraraka and the “It will be fun, trust me”’s from Midoriya (who he absolutely couldn’t say no to when he looked like that . Shouto wasn’t entirely sure it wasn’t a secondary quirk or something.) wore him down to the point that he was here, at 11pm—after Aizawa’s set patrol time of the 1-A dorm ended. Apparently Hagakure had checked, but Shouto was just going to go with it—gathering up a blanket and a pillow to head down to the common room with the rest of the class for their ‘new and improved class sleepover.’
Shouto was half-convinced that this was an excuse to party thinly veiled with welcoming Shinsou into their class, but who was he to judge.
So, he had gathered up sleeping things, his slippered feet tip-toeing to the door of his room before he had stopped, bringing him to the present moment, still standing in front of his door, a recent revelation on top of his mind.
This was his first sleepover.
What if he messed it up?
Yes, he had been instructed to bring very specific things (“Pillow, blanket, and yourself . That one's most important.”) but what if he had forgotten something? What if he just went down and spoiled everyone’s fun? What if they laughed at him for never having gone to a sleepover before? What if—
“Todoroki? Are you in here? Almost everyone’s downstairs so I came to check if you fell asleep or not. You can come downstairs and sleep if you want—Kacchan did that because Kirishima told him to participate—or you can stay asleep if you want I guess…I would—I mean we would—I mean it would be nice if you came you know because like…I don’t…Can you hear me?”
Shouto opens the door, almost smashing his face into Midoriya’s raised fist.
“Hi, I was just about to come down.”
Midoriya takes a step back, shock flying its way across his face before it settled into a soft smile. Shouto tried to push past him but he stood strong in the door, the image complete with a set of matching All Might brand pyjamas.
“Something’s bothering you.”
Shouto pauses for a second before stepping forward, fingers tightening around his pillow.
“Nothing’s bothering me. Come on, let’s go downstairs.”
“Hmm,” Midoriya thinks for a second, placing his hand on his chin, “no.”
Shouto groans. “It’s seriously nothing…just…”
Midoriya hums, and Shouto knows he’s been trapped. At this point it’s either spill to Midoriya or die, and at this point Shouto doesn’t really know what would be worse. He goes with the option that won’t end in his death.
“This is my first sleepover and I’m kind of nervous,” he rushes out, and Midoriya’s face softens an impossible amount, his eyes becoming large and rounded as he took in the sight of a nervous Shouto clutching onto his pillow and blanket like they’re a lifeline, a light pink colour dusting across his cheeks, shifting his weight from foot to foot.
“Actually…it’s my first sleepover as well,” he says, and Shouto looks up. Midoriya’s soft smile has returned to his face and he leans up against Shouto’s door frame. Shouto lets his arms relax a bit while he tries to not burst out in flames when Midoriya runs a hand through his green curls.
“It…is?” Shouto asks tentatively, and Midoriya lets out a small laugh.
“Yeah. I didn’t really have…” He pauses, “friends. When I was a kid I mean. So I never really got to sleep over at anyone’s house. We’re kind of in the same boat here, y’know?”
Midoriya shoots him another smile before turning around and marching out the door to the staircase.
“Now come on, I was gonna ask Uraraka for fun sleepover games we could play, and I’m pretty sure someone bought chips a few days ago. Also, you have to congratulate Shinsou on finally getting into the hero course, and be my first time sleepover buddy. Don’t bail out on me now.”
“I told you I was coming before, didn’t I?”
Midoriya laughs, holding the door to the staircase open for him and his blanket-pillow combo in his arms.
“Yeah, but this time I’m making sure of it!”
When Shouto and Midoriya finally got downstairs their 18 classmates cheered and Shouto immediately got roped into a class storytime around the chip bowl with Momo, who was telling Shinsou about the internships they had all done.
Maybe there was a reason he had agreed to this in the first place (and maybe half the reason was currently sitting beside Uraraka, laughing at something Kaminari said.)
Shouto decided that he was glad Midoriya (and Uraraka, but mostly Midoriya) had convinced him to come to the sleepover. Even when Kirishima almost woke up Bakugou and he almost killed Midoriya. Even when Momo had dumped an entire large bag of matryoshka dolls on his head. It had been fun, and told Midoriya so when they were laying down to go to sleep.
“‘M glad you had fun,” Midoriya said, his cute sleepy voice a little bit slurred, “I had fun too.”
Shouto hummed and turned around, burying his face into his hands with a knowing look from the still-awake girls, who giggled at his distress.
Still fun though, he thought as he fell asleep. Still fun.
(He was having decidedly less fun in the morning, waking up to an angry-ass teacher and Midoriya wrapped tight around Shouto’s left side, a blanket covering both of them while Shouto pretended to sleep to not hear Aizawa yelling at the rest of the class about how much of a hazard what they had done was. Was it worth it when the rest of the class held that photo above his head as blackmail for the next month. The answer was a firm, firm yes.)
