Chapter Text

Since they adopted Koharu, Maya had changed. She looked stressed all the time, so thoughtful, living on her own little world. One where Claudine couldn’t reach her. She had never seen the brunette so puzzled by something before, she didn’t even look happy. Her purple gaze was usually so bright, but on these days it looked tormented.

The raven baby girl was playing with some plastic cubs of different colors on the floor. And Maya watched her, silently. Entranced.

“Maya, what’s gotten into you?” Claudine said, taking the baby on her hands. The brunette was too concentrated on the blue plastic cube.

Then Claudine gave her the baby. “Take her.”

Maya blinked twice, processing her wife’s action. “Oh- Yeah, sorry Ma Claudine.” She took the baby on her arms. Making her sit on her lap.

“Alright, we need to talk.” Claudine crossed her arms and sat down at her side on the couch.

Maya’s eyes looked at her alarmed. That sentence was always nerve wracking for her.

“It’s about the baby.” Claudine mumbled. “And her idiot mommy.” She pinched Maya’s cheek.

Koharu laughed.

Both gasped at the adorable laugh. “She liked it.” Claudine pinched once more Maya’s cheek and Koharu kept giggling. Maya lifted her, and the baby stood up. With just one year, Koharu’s standing was firm.

“She likes you.” Claudine smiled at Koharu, who was too busy pinching Maya’s cheeks. “Are you not happy… about her?”

Maya’s heart broke. Claudine’s voice came out soft and weak. And the smile on her face was a sad one, not her usual lovingly smile. “No, I’m the happiest. I love both of you more than anything else in my life.”

Koharu’s small hands were all around her face, touching, pinching and squeezing the skin available.

“But you don’t seem like it.”

Maya sighed. “Because I’m scared.” She’s been reflexing about how to be a good mother all those days, she was scared she might hurt her child or her wife in some way. She didn’t want Koharu to grow up feeling ignored like herself, she didn’t want to push her into doing things she did not want. To push her to her own physical limits in order to be the very best without knowing how tired she feels.

She wanted to be the best mother, a loving and supporting one. One who helps their child to become the best on whatever they want to be. She wanted Koharu to grow up feeling loved, taken care of, happy in all aspects of her life. Just happy.

She looked into the rosy pools in front of her. “I want to give her everything, precisely the things I did not have.” She made the baby girl sit again, against her will. However, even in that position her Mother’s chin and cheeks were still at her reach.

“That’s what have gotten you all weird?” Claudine’s eyes snapped wide open. “You and I are the best team Maya, she will be fine.” The silver blonde kissed her on the forehead. “We will be fine.”

Maya smiled, of course she knew it. But she was afraid of forgetting it along the way. Koharu watched Maya’s face angrily. Small tears started to form in her red eyes.

“Besides, I know you and I can assure you that you will be a good mother Maya, and even if you fail at something, you are not alone. We are in this together.” Claudine cupped Maya’s cheek. "This is another challenge for you and me to overcome."

The baby girl started crying on Maya’s arms. Claudine chuckled. “Seems like she’s the jealous type.”

Maya sighed. “Listen little bird.” Koharu’s crying waned a little bit. “My attention is all yours again, don’t get mad.”

A hint of proudness filled Maya’s chest.

She’s just like me.
