Work Text:

"Do it." it was a firm whisper.

Those dark eyes stared up at him, determined, taunting him, but also held a hint of fear in them.

He understood that fear. He had made peace with it, when he took up this job.

But never did he realize the same job would bring him to this point in his life, where he had to chose -

Whether to pull the trigger and resume his job as everybody's worse nightmare or throw away everything and pull the man into his arms.

"Do it." this time, it was a command.

"If you lower your guard now, I'll pull the trigger."

"Then do it." He said. He couldn't help it. Saying it out, pushing the burden away, made him feel relived somewhat.

"Wha-"

"Pull the trigger, Tae." he said, and threw away the gun.

"WTF Guk!" Tae cursed and the grip on his gun tightened. "You know they'll come after you."

"Then let them. I don't care anymore." He was tired of running. He was tired of taking orders.

He was tired of his current life. And he was definitely tired of fighting with Tae.

"Guk...please. Please pick up your gun." Tae begged, but Guk just shook his head. He had made up his mind and nothing could change it.

Not even Tae.

"Please..."

"No." Guk took a step towards Tae, and the other flinched.

"Stop. Don't you dare...don't come closer!"

Guk didn't listen. "If you want to shoot then get on with it."

"Why are you doing this?!" Tae's voice trembled, and his hand shook. "Stop..."

"Stop...Guk-" Tae whispered the words over and over again, chanting it, as if trying to engrave them in his head.

Guk took another step, and one more, until he was in front of Tae, the barrel of the gun pressing against his chest, right above his heart.

With one finger, he positioned it right over his heart, and Tae's eyes widened. "Do it now, Tae. You won't have a chance the next time."

"Why?"

"Why...what?"

"Why did you stop?" Tae asked, his voice barely above a whisper, the gun in his hand shaking hard.

And Guk felt the hard press of metal on his chest, as Tae were trying to drill into his heart by pushing the gun as hard as he could.

"Don't you already know the answer? Tae?"

Tae's lips trembled. "It wasn't supposed to end this way."

He bowed his head and turned away his face. "We weren't supposed to-"

"Fall in love-" Guk completed his thought. "I know."

"But Tae," Guk touched Tae's chin, his fingers lifting Tae's head and forcing him to meet Guk's eyes.

"Love doesn't see whether you're an enemy or a friend." Guk said, wiping away a tear trailing down Tae's cheek.

"It only sees our hearts and connects the strings. The rest is up to us, whether to break that connection or go ahead and explore it.

"If I knew-

"I would still love you, Tae." Guk interrupted him. "No matter angel or demon, I know I would still fall for you."

"But-" Tae lower his gun. His hand fell limp on his side, and Guk closed the distance, his arms circling Tae's waist.

Tae still refused to meet his gaze.

"Look at me, Tae." Guk held him close, flush against his body, their breaths mingling and Tae's sniffles filled his ears.

"Guk...what are we going to do?"

The question made him chuckle. "I don't know." He had no idea.

He had no idea how they were going to fight the system. He had no idea how they would overcome the backlash they were going to face from this world.

He only knew one thing - he would do anything to protect the person in his arms.

He would do anything for Tae.

"I don't know what the next step will be."

"But-" he turned to face Tae, and smiled.

"I know I'll do anything to protect you, to prove to you that all is not lost. To show you that our love is much stronger then the hatred breeding in this world."

Tae smiled.

"Do you believe me?" Guk asked.

Tae nodded and leaned in, giving him a quick peck on the lips. "Of course, I believe you Gukkie." The earlier, fear and hopelessness had disappeared from Tae's eyes.

It made Guk happy.

"I promise you."

"I promise you that no matter how impossible things look right now, we'll emerge from it, winning and happy."

"I promise you, Tae."

Guk whispered, sealing their promise with a kiss.
