Work Text:
namjoon worked part time at a bookstore, and as part of the employee perks, he was allowed to bring one book (up to a certain monetary value, of course) home every two weeks. occasionally he'd get some children's books for jeongguk, even though he couldn't read yet, because jeongguk liked the colourful pictures.
this time, he thought jeongguk would want to try colouring some pictures, so he brought back a colouring book and a small set of coloured pencils for him.
"oh, thanks, joon-ah," yoongi said when he saw the book and pencil set. "who knows, this might help with his fine motor skill as well."
jeongguk made grabby hands at the book, wanting to see it, and namjoon gave it to him, helping him flip through the book.
jeongguk frowned in confusion at the black and white pages. "no?" he asked, patting the book cover, where the pictures were coloured.
"it's for you to colour, ggukie," namjoon explained with a wide smile. "you can colour it however you want," he added, pulling some of the coloured pencils out. he helped jeongguk grab onto one, and helped him colour in a small section of the first picture, watching with fondness as jeongguk's eyes widened in wonder as the picture started to fill with colour.
"da!" jeongguk exclaimed excitedly, colouring in more parts of the picture.
"there are more colours you can choose from, baby," yoongi said as he pulled out the pencils and laid them on the coffee table. "use whichever ones you want, but be careful not to break the pencil."
jeongguk let go of the yellow one he was holding and grabbed a green pencil. he started colouring in other parts of the picture, and started to hum happily as he did so.
"well, i'm glad he likes it," namjoon said, petting jeongguk's head and chuckling to himself when jeongguk butted his head against namjoon's hand for more pets.
"thanks, joon-ah," yoongi said again. "you could've used your allowance to get a book for yourself. we could get him some colouring books too."
"i know, but i wanted to. don't worry about it, hyung," namjoon said. "well, i better head back to the university now. i'll see you guys around soon."
"yeah, see you."
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
when seokjin came home that night, jeongguk was still busy colouring while yoongi was in the kitchen preparing dinner.
"hi, baby, did you miss me?" seokjin asked as he bent down and kissed jeongguk's forehead while yoongi rolled his eyes, but then smiled to himself. romance might be dying, but love certainly wasn't.
jeongguk squealed as he nearly tackled seokjin and proudly showed off the picture he was colouring. it was surprisingly quite neat, not too far out of the lines, and seokjin wondered if maybe they got a budding artist in their hands too. what a multitalented child.
"that's pretty good, ggukie," seokjin said, actually impressed. "you're quite good at a lot of things, hm? when you're older you can choose if you want to learn anything more seriously, okay?"
jeongguk went back to colouring, ignoring seokjin who made a wounded noise before he wandered off to the kitchen.
"hi, my other baby, did you miss me?" he greeted as he sidled up right behind yoongi, hugging him from behind and pressing a kiss to his cheek. "where did he get the colouring book from?"
"namjoon brought it over today," yoongi replied, still stirring the stew he was making. "jeonggukie's pretty fascinated with it."
"i can see that," seokjin commented.
he turned around to watch jeongguk, and saw him finishing up with the picture on the left side of the book, which was in front of him. he stared at the picture on the right side of the book, which was closer to the other side of the coffee table, and rolled the coloured pencils over towards the other side gently. the raised wooden edge of the coffee table prevented the pencils from rolling off onto the floor, and jeongguk stood up, walking around to the other side before plopping down on his bottom again and started colouring the other picture.
"why did he--"
"i know."
"so he's just been rotating himself instead of the book???"
