Work Text:
Seokjin came from a very wealthy family. His father is a businessman and his mother is a lawyer, both usually being busy with their work. His older brother already has his entire future planned - to study business and to take the position from their father when the time comes. His life is pretty good in comparison to others.
He gets everything he wants.
If he wants a new toy that he saw from his friends and classmates, his parents would hand it to him in a heartbeat. If he gets tired of playing with the toy, they would just throw it away or donate it to some random orphanage. It gets pretty boring sometimes. His hyung is always busy with studying for his lessons that he never got the time to play with Seokjin. He couldn’t remember the last time he played with his brother or whether they ever did at all.
But still, Seokjin couldn’t really complain. He’s living a good life. He has food to eat and he has everything.
He wishes he has more friends though. Seokjin wants to know how it feels like to be friends with someone who isn’t his father’s business partners’ children. He doesn’t like playing with those kids because he doesn’t really like how they talk to him. They’re not nice. Seokjin doesn’t like them.
And so when his father had a treehouse built just for him in front of their house, Seokjin was really happy. He prefers staying there than in their house where he’s surrounded by their maids and butler. They pamper him a lot, let him get away with a lot of trouble he brings them, and Seokjin hates it. He doesn’t like being treated differently. So he finds solace in that treehouse, filled with everything he loves. He has books and food there, and he can just enjoy his time all by himself. Throughout the years, he learned how to be happy all by himself. It’s better. No one can take advantage of him if he’s alone.
So imagine Seokjin’s surprise when a stranger suddenly climbs up his treehouse. He immediately holds a book in his hand, ready to throw it to the intruder if it turns out to be dangerous. But it isn’t. It’s just a harmless little boy who looks too young to be a criminal.
The boy enters his treehouse, eyes widening as he sees Seokjin. He’s pretty cute, in Seokjin’s opinion. He has very fair skin that makes Seokjin wants to pinch him all over just for fun. He has these chubby cheeks and wow, Seokjin just wants to hug him because he’s so sure that the boy would feel so soft just like his plushy.
But Seokjin swallows all of the compliments threatening to escape his mouth, opting to focus on the possible danger ahead. The boy could be dangerous.
“Who are you and what are you doing here? This is my treehouse,” Seokjin says, glaring at the boy.
“I-I’m Yoongi. Can I s-stay here? Mommy and Daddy were fighting and-”
The boy starts to cry, loud sobs escaping his lips
.
“O-okay, stop crying!”
Seokjin is panicking. He doesn’t know what to do. He has never played with someone younger before and no one ever cried in front of him like this. But no matter how long Seokjin tries to wait for the boy, Yoongi, to stop crying, he just wouldn’t.
“Hey! Stop crying!” Seokjin yells, startling Yoongi and making him cry more. He’s wailing so loudly, fat tears escaping his eyes and rolling down his chubby cheeks. His eyes are turning so reddish and Seokjin can feel his heart contracting with how much he pities the boy. He just wants him to stop crying.
“Hey,” he calls one again, softly this time, while crawling close to the boy and placing a hand on his shoulder. “D-don’t cry.” He rubs Yoongi’s shoulder, finally feeling relieved when his sobs die down a little. He didn’t stop crying though. Soft sobs are still escaping his lips.
“S-sorry,” Yoongi stutters, a pout forming on his lips.
It startles Seokjin completely when the smaller boy suddenly wraps his arms tightly around Seokjin’s torso, burying his face against Seokjin’s chest. He starts to cry again and Seokjin immediately hugs back.
It’s weird. No one has ever hugged him before. His father just pats him on the shoulder when he does something good. His mother just smiles at him and his brother couldn’t be bothered to do anything. So having a stranger suddenly hug him out of nowhere is pretty weird. But it doesn’t mean that Seokjin doesn’t like it. In fact, maybe Seokjin could get used to this. Hugs are pretty great. Hugs are amazing. Seokjin loves hugs now.
“I’m Seokjin. You can call me hyung,” he says, feeling the warmth inside his chest as the boy looks up to him without letting go. He looks absolutely adorable.
“Okay, hyung.”
Seokjin smiles softly after that, slowly feeling comfort creep up to his senses.
His father would probably scold him for letting a stranger enter his treehouse, especially someone who isn’t a son of one of his business partners. But Seokjin finds himself not caring. Yoongi is his friend now (they don’t know each other that much yet, but Yoongi gives best hugs and Seokjin really likes it), and Seokjin doesn’t plan on letting his father take Yoongi away from him.
Seokjin allows Yoongi to stay, reading him stories and letting him eat from his precious stash of food. Yoongi just stares at him with wide eyes filled with adoration, clinging to every word Seokjin says. Seokjin almost blushes with how much attention he gets. He’s not used to the attention. No one ever pays attention to him when his brother is around. But Yoongi- he just looks at Seokjin as if nothing else in the world matters and Seokjin really wants him to be his best friend.
“Hyung, I have to leave now. It’s dark and halmeoni would get worried,” he says, making Seokjin frown immediately. He doesn’t want Yoongi to go. Yoongi is his best friend and he wants to spend more time with the smaller boy.
“Will you come back to play tomorrow?” he asks, keeping a soft grip on Yoongi’s small wrist.
Yoongi smiles widely, gums showing, and Seokjin almost cooed at the sight. “Sure! I wanna play again tomorrow!”
Giggles escape Seokjin’s mouth. He couldn’t remember the last time he felt this happy.
“Okay, but I’ll miss you.”
“You will?” Yoongi asks, eyes wide. Is he not used to people saying that they’ll miss him?
“Of course, you’re my best friend now,” Seokjin answers so genuinely.
“Okay, hyung. You’re my best friend too. And I’ll come back tomorrow!” Yoongi leans in to press a kiss on Seokjin’s cheek before hurrying to climb down the treehouse to go back to his home.
Seokjin is left with flushed cheeks and a loud heartbeat. Yoongi really is something else.
❀
Since then, Yoongi has started to visit him regularly. They would spend all day up in the treehouse, giggling and laughing about Seokjin’s ridiculous jokes that he just randomly came up with. Yoongi bought a Walkman cassette player one day and Seokjin fell in love with music. Sometimes, he would hum along to the tune of the song, and Yoongi would look at him, smile, and tell him that he sounds amazing. Seokjin loved his own voice from then on.
Seokjin got a dog that same year for his birthday and he named it Jjangu.
Jjangu is absolutely adorable with his white fur. Seokjin loves running his hand through his fur and Yoongi does too. The thing is, Jjangu hates Seokjin’s brother but he loves Yoongi so much. Jjangu always runs towards Yoongi and gives him long licks on the face whenever Yoongi comes to visit, and Seokjin loves hearing Yoongi’s giggles whenever that happens.
“If that dog bites you, it wouldn’t be my responsibility,” Seokjung, Seokjin’s older brother, says threateningly before walking away with a huff, most probably to go back to his room to study and become even smarter.
“I don’t like your brother, hyung,” Yoongi whispers once Seokjung is far enough to not hear them.
“Me neither.” Seokjin laughs, turning his attention back to Jjangu who is barking happily on Yoongi’s lap.
Seokjin’s parents immediately accepted Yoongi the moment they caught him sneaking into Seokjin’s treehouse, much to their surprise. Seokjin initially thought that they would definitely kick the boy out and scold Seokjin for playing with a stranger. But after seeing how close the two are, they just decided to allow them to play together as long as it makes Seokjin happy.
It has been a full year since their accidental first meeting, and Seokjin continues to love Yoongi more and more. He’s pretty sure he’ll never find another best friend other than Yoongi.
“Mom and Dad are fighting again,” Yoongi says with a small pout. Seokjin has learned through the year of spending time with Yoongi that the younger boy pouts pretty often, but unintentionally. He just apparently got used to speaking in pout and Seokjin is not really complaining. He thinks it looks absolutely adorable on Yoongi.
“Are you okay? Did they scare you?” Seokjin asks worriedly, shifting closer to Yoongi to provide him comfort. “You can stay here if it gets too much. I’m sure Dad would let you. He likes you more than my other friends.”
Yoongi chuckles softly, turning to look at Seokjin straight in the eyes. “It’s okay, I have halmeoni. She takes care of me all the time so I wouldn’t be scared.”
“She must be really kind.”
“She is.”
“I want to meet her someday. Do you think I can?”
Yoongi’s eyes light up immediately as excitement consumes him.
“Yes! Halmeoni bakes delicious cookies, hyung!” he yells, almost startling Jjangu who’s still sleeping on his lap.
Seokjin pats the dog gently to calm him down before smiling at Yoongi. “I love cookies. I’d love to meet her.”
❀
Seokjin went to meet Yoongi’s grandmother a week later, after getting permission from both of his parents. Yoongi leads him happily to their own house, a hand tightly grasping Seokjin’s. Seokjin could feel his cheeks heat up at the contact, still not used to someone else holding his hand like that.
But it only took a few minutes of hand-holding and Seokjin is already used to it. He tightens his hold on Yoongi’s hand, confidently following the smaller boy inside the house.
Seokjin met Yoongi’s grandmother that day, and just like what Yoongi had said, she baked a set of cookies for Seokjin and Yoongi to enjoy. She just watched them eat the cookies and pats them both on the head, saying something about how they’re such good friends. Yoongi proudly boasts about how he’s ‘Seokjinnie-hyung’s best friend’ and the old woman just laughed and gave Seokjin a warm smile.
When Seokjin got back home that night, he couldn’t help but smile the entire time while having dinner with his family and even until he went to sleep.
❀
Yoongi went to a sleepover one night, and Seokjin couldn’t be any happier. He could see how his parents absolutely adore the younger boy too. He couldn’t blame them.
Seokjung still looks pretty upset about the whole thing, but Seokjin finds himself not caring.
Yoongi eats dinner with them, acting all nervous and shy around Seokjin’s parents. Seokjin just smiles throughout the whole dinner, holding Yoongi’s hand tightly under the table to calm him down. Yoongi loves to hold hands and Seokjin loves to indulge in whatever Yoongi wants.
They played inside the treehouse the whole night before their butler called Seokjin to tell him to get ready for bed.
Seokjin grabs Yoongi by the hand and leads him to his bedroom, the smaller boy gasping in awe as he looks around the huge room. “This is bigger than my room,” he mutters, making Seokjin laugh a little.
“Come here, sleep next to me,” he says, patting the large space beside him on the bed to invite Yoongi.
Yoongi doesn’t hesitate at all. He climbs on the bed, giggling at how soft it is. He lays down on the bed, sideways and facing Seokjin. He has never been this close to Seokjin before.
“Is Jjangu gonna sleep here?” Yoongi asks, but Seokjin shook his head.
“Dad wouldn’t allow Jjangu to sleep in my room. He has his own bed to sleep in.”
Yoongi pouts, making Seokjin sad too.
“But I’m here! You can play with Jjangu tomorrow. Let’s just sleep, for now, okay?”
Yoongi nods, shifting closer to Seokjin and taking his hand to clasp it with his. Seokjin stares at their joined hands, smiling softly before tightening the grip as if he never wanted to let go. “You really like holding my hand, don’t you?”
“Yeah,” the younger boy admits. “This way, I would know if you’re leaving.”
Seokjin frowns, leaning closer to press his forehead against Yoongi’s before closing his eyes. “I’ll never leave. You don’t have to worry.”
“Promise?” Yoongi asks.
“I promise,” Seokjin answers.
No one says anything more, the tight hold serving as the completion of their promise.
Seokjin feels a soft peck on his cheek before Yoongi settles once again to press their foreheads together and drift off to sleep.

Seokjin comes from a really wealthy family. He gets everything he wants, and everything he could ever ask for. He has a big house, lots of toys and food, and butlers and maids to do everything for him.
But most importantly, he has a treehouse and he has Yoongi. And well, Jjangu too.
And Seokjin soon realized that he doesn’t need hundreds of toys and friends. He doesn’t need a new set of expensive clothes every other day. He just needs Yoongi and Jjangu in their treehouse, and he’ll be happy. And maybe a little hand-holding and forehead kisses from Yoongi would be great too. And the delicious cookies Yoongi’s grandmother loves baking for them.
