Chapter Text
“Your guardian spirit... oh, wow, it’s kind of abnormal.”
/
Kaidou has spent his whole life wondering about his guardian spirit.
The words on his wrist tell him that his soulmate can see his guardian spirit—his abnormal guardian spirit. He thinks he’s guarded by a demon, or a dark force, or something so strange and powerful to look after the Jet Black Wings.
Guardian spirit. Guardian spirit...
That really is an amazing power. To see the guardian spirit of the Jet Black Wings...! His soulmate must be a formidable opponent against Dark Reunion, a strong and fearless warrior, connected to Kaidou by fate.
He’s always been excited to meet his soulmate. He knows he already loves his soulmate, knows they can fight alongside each other in battle, knows they both have special powers.
Sometimes he thinks he and his soulmate can defeat Dark Reunion together. He daydreams and writes about that more than he’d like to admit.
So... no, he isn’t nervous to meet his soulmate. He’s never been nervous—only excited and fearless!
/
That is, until the new transfer student arrives. The new transfer student who can see guardian sprits.
He’s never been this nervous in his life. His blush is rising from his neck to his ears and his heart is beating out of his chest, and he’s grabbing Saiki by the shoulders and shaking him and yelling
“Oh my god, Saiki, the new kid is my soulmate—!”
and Saiki looks more than unamused. He gives him a neutral expression.
“Good luck,” he says. “That guy’s a handful.”
“You met him? What’s his name?”
“Toritsuka.”
Toritsuka...
His hands are trembling. He can’t sit still. His soulmate is in his school and he knows his name and he can finally meet him...!
He starts to fill in blanks in his mind. He knows he already loves Toritsuka, knows he can fight alongside Toritsuka, knows he can defeat Dark Reunion with Toritsuka.
Kaidou looks down at his wrist. The words guardian spirit stare back up at him, and he blushes so much that his face is a bright red color. He’s practically jumping up and down.
He grabs Saiki by the arm when he tries to walk away.
“What do I do? What do I say?!”
“Just tell him he’s your soulmate. It’s not a big deal.”
Kaidou hides his face in his hands. How could Saiki say that? This is the most important moment of his life, and he feels like his heart is about to explode because he’s so nervous and jittery.
“It is a big deal—he’s my soulmate!”
“Then just go talk to him. You two are meant to be.”
Meant to be. Meant to be... guardian spirit...
He’s daydreamed about his soulmate—Toritsuka—his entire life, but the thought of just talking to him is... scary. Putting a face to a name...
He’s shaking. Saiki’s gone, and he almost doesn’t notice. Toritsuka’s name is repeating in his head like a chant, sending a shiver down his spine.
Kaidou brings his wrist to his lips and kisses the words, holding his hand to his heart and sighing.
He wants to find him, even though he’s nervous. It’s like a mission: find the Jet Black Wings’s soulmate somewhere in the school!
But... it feels different than any regular mission. So, so much different. It’s not a fight against Dark Reunion—it’s a search for his soulmate.
It’s different... but he’s willing to accept the mission.
/
Kaidou can guess by the crowd of people asking about their guardian spirit, that the boy in the middle is Toritsuka. His heart skips a beat when he catches a glimpse of him.
More blank spaces are filled in his mind. Toritsuka has messy purple hair with a white bandana, and he’s wearing his school uniform in a lackluster manner that reminds Kaidou of himself.
He’s... handsome. Really, really attractive, and Kaidou’s way too nervous to talk to him. What does he say? He knows he’ll inevitably say what’s on Toritsuka’s wrist, but...
Holding his wrist close to his heart, he makes his way through the crowd. Toritsuka doesn’t notice him—he’s smiling brightly while chatting with a few girls about their guardian spirits. Kaidou wants to make himself known, but he’s far too shy.
His face is red, and his heart is beating out of his chest—his soulmate is right in front of him...! He wants to reach out to tap his shoulder, but he just stays put.
Kaidou takes in a deep breath. His mind races with what to say to his soulmate, what’s written on his wrist, what he says to the boy he’s destined to meet.
This might be even scarier than fighting Dark Reunion. And if he doesn’t say something now, he’ll blurt out whatever’s on his mind—
And that’s exactly what he does.
Great job, Jet Black Wings!
He speaks confidently, a sly look on his face, as his soulmate turns to look at him for the first time.
“Guardian spirit? Sounds dumb.”
