Chapter Text
Wei Wuxian knew that he was drowsy, that he felt like he was floating, though he knew that he was perfectly still on a bed, but maybe thinking that he was on some sort of place swaying with the wind or the water seemed like a better option. It was. Wei Wuxian was a free spirit, never wanting to be tied down to something or someone, and yet there he was in an unfortunate down spiral of consequences on the choices he barely had control over.
Through the haze, he could make out some sounds; familiar voices over the constant beeping that was almost nonexistent to his ears which had already gotten used to it.
“You told me that nobody comes to take care of him,” there was one voice. He remembered it belonged to a strict man, the strictest in the place. Wei Wuxian knew that the man was only trying his best for him, but he refused to live as miserably as he did.
“Yes, but uncle, wouldn’t it be too soon?” there was another voice. Ah, Wei Wuxian remembered that this was the man who always came up to his room, never letting a day pass without having even just a short conversation with him. This man always made sure that he was fine and was taken care of.
Wei Wuxian tried to move, he think he did. He was slowly gaining control over his body once more, the feeling of him limbs and the tips of his fingers returning. He was coming back down from the intense medication and he couldn’t be even more glad of it. It meant it was time to talk with the kind man.
“It is a prototype scheduled to be released in a few years, it is good to make it learn as early as now,” there came the first voice again. What were they even talking about? Wei Wuxian couldn’t grasp the context.
“Fine. We’ll let it try.”
Wei Wuxian slowly had vision, he realized it was him getting enough strength and control to open his eyes. In his view were three blurry white figures standing at the side of his bed. He could remember the tallest, it was his doctor, Lan Xichen. He always had a soft smile waiting for Wei Wuxian to come up from the haze. He would always be asking if everything was fine and if nothing was hurting. Wei Wuxian would give Lan Xichen an award, if he could, an award that was the best doctor in the entire universe.
The smaller one to his left was the hospital director, Lan Qiren. Wei Wuxian wanted to jump off his bed at the sight of the old man. He only ever went to see Wei Wuxian if he snuck out of his hospital room, but he was there now, so Wei Wuxian questioned why Lan Qiren visited.
The one at the middle, he couldn’t decipher who. A nurse, perhaps? Wei Wuxian had never met them yet. Once his vision cleared up, he saw the blank look on the golden eyes the man in the middle held.
“He’s a looker,” Wei Wuxian managed to say despite the hoarse voice and scratchy throat from the lack of liquid, “Who is he?”
Lan Xichen helped him sit up on his bed, propping a pillow on his back and another behind his head as the bed was tilted upwards. The doctor handed him a glass of water which Wei Wuxian accepted and downed in a few seconds. Wei Wuxian kept taking glances on the new, strange man who just stood there, unblinking.
“Doctor, who is he?” Wei Wuxian asked again.
“He’s your new personal caretaker,” Lan Xichen answered and before he could speak further, Wei Wuxian had already piped up again, a bright smile on his face.
“Hi! I’m Wei Wuxian. You can call me Wei Ying. Are you single?” He asked, sticking his hand out for the other to shake, careful to not move it too much lest he wanted blood to run up the IV again.
The man blinked once then turned to Lan Xichen.
“Response: not found.” he spoke in a neutral tone.
“Ah, Wei Wuxian, you should ask him simpler questions,” Lan Xichen said, “He can’t comprehend much questions yet, I still have to update it. You can help by teaching him the proper responses through simple conversations for now.”
Wei Wuxian chuckled, “Doctor, that’s funny. I didn’t understand anything that you said.”
“Ask him his name,” Lan Xichen responded.
“Okay then.” He nodded, turning to the man with the beautiful golden eyes, “What’s your name?”
“I am LWJ-2301.”
“What kind of name is that?” Wei Wuxian asked.
“It is the name given to me by Lan Xichen.”
“He’s a robot, Wei Wuxian,” Lan Xichen told him and everything actually made sense.
“So I just keep calling him LWJ-2301 like it’s no big deal?” Wei Wuxian asked, “I’m not calling you that! Your name is Lan Zhan! Got it? Lan Zhan.”
“My name is Lan Zhan,” the robot repeated, “I am your personal caretaker.”
