“Hey Shou?” The word was practically whispered in the dark room, barely audible above the usual hum of the ceiling fan spinning above their heads, “You awake?”
“Noooo,” Shouta groaned into his pillow as he didn’t even bother to open his eyes, “I’m dead to the world. Leave me alone.”
He heard his best friend chuckle, the sound reverberating through the mattress they were sharing, and finally cracked an eye open to glare at him.
The look on Hizashi’s face made him pause before he could come up with an entertaining insult, lips twisted in a pained sort of smile as he stared up at his bedroom ceiling.
“What is it?” He asked tiredly, stifling a yawn.
“Ah,” Hizashi blinked rapidly and turned his head slightly to meet his best friend’s curious gaze, “It’s nothing really, just can’t sleep. I was gonna ask what you wanna do tomorrow?”
Even though they had spent most of the afternoon hanging out, they had plans to spend the entire weekend together.
Hizashi’s mothers were out of town, his Ma had a business conference to attend, and after several reassurances from Hizashi, his Mom decided to go along and make a small vacation out of it.
Hizashi had bounced into the classroom that Friday morning, slamming his hands onto Shouta’s desk and excitedly babbling about his moms needing to be at the airport before school let out and begging Shouta to spend the weekend with him in the empty Yamada house.
“What’s really wrong?” Shouta drawled, completely ignoring the question as he met the blonde’s anxious gaze.
“Nothing,” Hizashi’s voice rose to a higher pitch, “It’s nothing really. Sorry, I’m just- just lost in my head, y’know?”
Shouta frowned, knowing those words all too well. Hizashi tended to blow things off when they were bothering him, citing that he was just being ‘too emotional’ or ‘being silly’ or ‘lost in his head’.
Shouta supposed it came from a lifetime of not being taken seriously. People got so used to Hizashi being able to laugh things off all time or be the optimist that they came to expect it from him.
He hated hearing his best friend try to dismiss his own feelings like that.
“It’s not nothing if it makes you look like that.” He turned on his side, nestling into his pillow and reaching out to poke at the blonde’s cheek.
Hizashi blinked at him with wide, green eyes before he gave a small, sheepish smile, “Don’t use your mind-reading powers for ill, Aizawa Shouta.”
Shouta rolled his eyes and blew his hair out of his face from where it had slipped in front of his eyes, “Very funny. Talk to me.”
Hizashi stared at him for a moment before looking back up at his ceiling and drawing in a long breath.
“What if we don’t get into the same school?” Hizashi asked finally, still refusing to meet Shouta’s gaze.
Shouta was quiet for a moment, “Then we go to different schools. Or we transfer during the first year.”
Hizashi chewed his lip, hating how easy the other teen made it sound, “But...”
“But what?” Shouta urged, letting his eyes drift shut as the warmth of the other’s body made him sleepy.
Hizashi swallowed nervously, “But what if by the time one of us transfers we’ve drifted apart? Or... met new people?”
Shouta reached out blindly without even opening his eyes to smack the blonde’s shoulder eliciting an offended yelp, “Don’t be an idiot.”
Hizashi huffed and was quiet for few minutes, long enough that Shouta began to drift off before the blonde murmured, “I’m just scared I wasted all this time and now I could lose my chance to tell you.”
“Tell me what?” Shouta groaned tiredly, shifting a bit to stay comfortable as the arm he’d shoved under his pillow began to grow numb.
Hizashi drew in a breath and tried to ignore how hard his heart was pounding, “I don’t want to lose you because I really like you, Shouta!”
The words came out sounding like a squeaky whisper, his cheeks burning with embarrassment as he held his breath and waited for the dark haired teen to respond.
“Well yeah, I think that’s why you’ve been clinging to me for almost three years.” Shouta snorted, his words slurred sleepily and obscured by his face being smushed into his pillow.
Hizashi blinked at the ceiling and then turned on his side to face the other, watching as Shouta sighed into his white sheets. He blanched as he realized the meaning of his words hadn’t landed.
“N-no,” Hizashi could feel his face getting even hotter, “Like I- I want to be with you, Shou.”
“You will be with me if we get into the same school.” Shouta drawled, shifting his legs again beneath the blanket.
Hizashi felt his flush begin to fade, replaced by a mixture of awe and frustration at how incredibly confused and clueless a half-asleep Shouta could be.
He tilted his head and huffed, “I’m scared that if you go to a different school, you’ll meet new people and find someone you want to be with. And I’ll... I’ll lose my chance.”
“You’re not making any sense.” Shouta frowned sleepily into his pillow, but still didn’t open his eyes.
Something brushed his nose, followed by the soft puff of air on his lips and when his eyes shot open he found himself nose-to-nose with the other teen.
Shouta stared him, their noses touching as Hizashi’s jade green eyes seemed to search his for something, “Sometimes you take things too goddamn literally, you know that?”
“Zashi?” He breathed, his lashes fluttering before the blonde surged forward and caught him in a chaste kiss, his hand balanced gently on the side of Shouta’s neck as their warm lips met.
It only lasted a moment, Shouta not even having time to let his eyes slip closed or reciprocate the gentle pressure, before the blonde pulled away from the kiss.
His eyes were soft as he shifted just far enough away to meet the other teen’s eyes again.
His lips curved into a smile, “I want to go to the same school and move into an apartment together and kiss you and take you on dates that you’ll complain are stupid cheesy and introduce you to people as my boyfriend.”
Shouta blinked at him rapidly, his lips tingling as he felt his cheeks grow warm.
His heart was pounding in his chest as those jade green eyes bore unabashedly into him.
His fingers twitched under the blanket they were sharing, reaching out to ghost over Hizashi’s own hand trapped between them. Hizashi watched him as their fingers brushed and entwined.
“I think...” He licked his dry lips, momentarily distracted by the taste there that could only belong to the blonde before he smiled, “I think I’d like that.”
“Oh thank fuck!” Hizashi breathed in relief, not letting Shouta get out a full laugh before he was catching him in another kiss. This time Shouta was more prepared, his lips parting easily to meet in a deeper kiss than before.
Hizashi let out a delighted gasp as their lips moved together, tentatively brushing his tongue against Shouta’s lower lip.
They kissed hungrily, legs tangling together as they shuffled into the middle of the bed and Hizashi tilted his head to deepen the kiss.
He pulled back after a moment, cheeks flushed warm and eyes sparkling with delight as he took in Shouta’s own pink blush and closed eyes.
“I’ve wanted to do that since the first day you walked into class.” The blonde murmured, pressing forward to give his best friend another gentle kiss.
“D-Don’t say stuff like that.” Shouta opened his eyes enough to glare at the other, trying to frown when Hizashi giggled at his darkening blush, but unable to wipe the half-smile from his lips.
“I’m just so happy you feel the same way.” Hizashi said breathily, his hand trailing up to tangle in Shouta’s dark hair.
Shouta took a steadying breath to calm his racing heart, “We might be the biggest idiots on this planet not to have realized it sooner.”
“Tensei is never going to let me hear the end of this,” Hizashi agreed, smiling gently, “He’s been pushing me to tell you how I really feel for months now.”
Shouta pushed forward and rested his forehead against the blonde’s, “... Nemuri has been trying to convince me that confessing shouldn’t be a big deal because we were practically already dating.”
Hizashi laughed joyously, “We kinda were...”
Shouta groaned and squeezed his eyes shut as he shook his head. Hizashi ran his fingers through his hair soothingly as the blush faded from his cheeks.
Eventually, Shouta cracked his eyes open again to take in the sight of the blonde who was watching him with half-lidded eyes.
“Do you wanna... like... get dinner tomorrow?” Hizashi’s cheeks were flushed an adorable shade of pink and Shouta’s heart skipped.
“Zashi, we already have plans to get dinner together tomorrow.” He deadpanned with a smirk as his best friend - boyfriend? - sputtered.
“I know!” Hizashi shot him an indignant glare, “You know what I mean, I’m trying to ask you on a... a date. A for-real date.”
“A for-real date?” Shouta hummed as he hitched his arm up and around Hizashi’s head, twirling his fingers in the messy blonde hair.
“Mhmm,” Hizashi was biting his lip and Shouta wasn’t sure if he was doing it because he thought he had anything to be nervous about or if he was failing miserably at looking coy.
“Hmm, like a for-real date between two for-real boyfriends?” Shouta looked away, feigning casualty as he felt his own blush return at the words.
Hizashi squeaked and closed the little distance between them, wrapping his long arms around Shouta’s middle and pressing his hot face into the crook of Shouta’s neck.
“Yes!!” He exclaimed too loudly, his voice muffled by the skin of Shouta neck.
Shouta couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face even if he wanted to, “I guess if you’re paying then sure.”
He shrugged, though with the blonde wrapped around him like an octopus it was hard to move more than an inch or two, and ignored the offended hiss that Hizashi let out.
“I know that when I get famous after I get my degree and can produce my own radio show that things will be different, but you don’t have to treat me like your sugar daddy just yet.” Hizashi joked as he snickered quietly.
Shouta gave a soft chuckle as he let his eyes slip closed again, enjoying the warmth of the other teen wrapped around him.
“Are you falling asleep already?” Hizashi asked in a quiet tone, his nose brushing against Shouta’s chin as he raised his head.
Shouta gave a noncommittal hum and kept his eyes closed even as he felt the blonde shifting against him.
Finally, Hizashi seemed to get comfortable, his lanky legs entwined with Shouta’s hairier ones and his arms still looped loosely around Shouta’s slim waist.
He pressed a small kiss to the dark haired teen’s jawline and smiled against his skin, feeling like he was going to burst with happiness.
He continued pressing quick, featherlight kisses to Shouta’s jaw, cheek, and neck even as the other began to snore softly.
He pressed one final kiss to Shouta’s nose, staring that the dark haired teen’s relaxed face and finally beginning to feel sleepy as he tightened his grip on the other’s midsection.
In his sleep Shouta hummed and curled his arm closer around Hizashi’s head, pulling him into his chest and drawing a happy sigh from the blonde.
