The sun was setting. Yellow to orange colors tinted the once blue sky as the sun dipped into the horizon. Students were taking their leave as another day of school ended. Excited chatter filled the school groundsーfinally being outside of their classrooms.
Nene sighed, looking at that sight blissfully. She was happy that classes for today were over. Not because she could finally rest after all the lessons, but because she had something planned to do with Hanako today.
Nene was waiting for him on the rooftop, a bag of donuts in her hands. The sweet aroma from the pastries filled her senses. She was quite proud of herself for convincing Hanako to another picnic on the rooftop. She even reassured him that nothing would interrupt them again unlike what happened last time.
Maybe what convinced him was her looking at him with an expression that he wouldn't dare say no toーor maybe it's because he somehow knew she would bake him donuts if he agreed.
A cold hand cupping her own startled her from her thoughts. It didn't bother her though. She found it soothing every time he would take her hand in his.
“Yashiro~” Hanako smiles at her as heat began to spread through her cheeks. “Sorry it took me a while, I had a meeting with the others.” He looks at the bag in her hands then right back at her face as if he was waiting for her to make a move.
Nene stared at him. His amber eyes stared back at her. She have always admired the way his eyes were as big as the moon. His gentle expression while he stared at her caught her off guard. Her cheeks swirled with the color of pinkーHanako’s soft smile never left his face.
“O-Oh! Here, I made these for you Hanako-kun.” She gently placed the bag in his hands, “I hope you like them..” Nene saidーalmost like a whisper but Hanako clearly heard it as he immediately opens the bag to taste one.
He was about to put the pastry in his mouth untilー"Eeeeeeeek!" He whipped his head at Nene's direction to see her being surrounded by Mokke. A lot of Mokke.
"Make us some!"
"Yeah!"
"Kill Honorable No. 7! Kill!"
They were all at her feet, reaching for her with their ears. Nene clearly wasn't amused with the growing cluster below her. "Hanako-kun! Help me!" She grabbed unto Hanako's armーpulling him towards her direction.
"Yashiro, calm down!" But she wasn't calming down, the little supernaturals continued to reach for her. Hanako felt somewhat annoyed with the Mokke. Not only they beat him in playing cardsーbut they're ruining what's supposed to be a lovely moment with Nene.
Hanako sighed. He gives the bag of donuts to Nene as he quickly puts a hand on her back, scooping her in his arms. Nene clutched the bag tightly, staring at Hanako's face. "Can't you guys leave us alone?" He glared at the Mokke.
Seeing the School Wonder's menacing glare, the Mokke quickly ran away. With the Mokke gone, they could finally enjoy their afternoon.
A minute has passed, Nene was still in Hanako's armsーboth of them didn't speak. They enjoyed each other's presence. The coolness of Hanako's body soothed Nene. Somehow she could feel warmth whenever they are closeーmaybe it was just her.
"Yashiro? Are you okay?" The gentleness of his voice made Nene's heart skip a beat. She nodded in response.
"Thank you, Hanako-kun." She smiled at him as she opens the bag in her handsーtaking out a donut. "Here, Hanako-kun. You haven't tasted one yet."
Hanako wasn't sure how to take the donut. His arms were around her.. should he put her down now? He hesitates, he looks at Nene for a secondーthen he leans in to take a bite of the donut.
He takes in the sweet taste of the donuts. They were good. Amazing actually. The thought of Nene making them just for him made the donuts sweeter. Just for him.
Nene giggled as she grabbed something from her pocket. "You have a little something there, Hanako-kun." She took her handkerchief and gently wiped the small crumbs on his cheek.
It felt like time stopped. Hanako could hear a distinct thumping sound. Was it Nene's? Or... was it his? He never knew that it was possible for his dead heart to beat once again. He could feel his chest tightened, heat prickled the back of his neck. Nene was in his arms. He could feel the warmth of Nene. The warmth he longed for so many yearsーwas now in his arms. Her fingers gently brushed along his cheekーif only that handkerchief wasn't in the way.
"There, all clean!" Nene raised her hankerchief as she gave Hanako a smile.
Hanako blinked. Why does this seem.. familiar?
He stared at Nene. He stared at her soft smile. He finally realized what happenedーhis cheeks flushed red as his hold of Nene tightened.
"Don't.. do that." He gently buries his face in her neck. He could only wish that it would hide his face from Nene. "Haven't I told you that before? You have to be careful, Yashiro.."
He lifted up his face, his lips gently dusted her cheek. He pulled back a little to look at her eyesーto show her that he was serious with what he said.
Nene could only smile at the gentleness Hanako showed. No one has ever cared about her as much as Hanako did. Sure, he was teasing sometimes but lately he was acting differently. She couldn't tell what was wrong but she didn't let that bother her. She trusted him so muchーshe knows that he would tell her everything one day. They made a promise to each other and she intended to keep that promise.
She lifted up her hand to Hanako's face, cupping his cheek ever so gently. She tilted her head a little as she gave him another smile. Hanako's eyes widenedーher face was illuminated by the sunlight. Her ruby eyes shone like the stars of the night sky. It was the most beautiful sight Hanako had ever seen.
"Okay.. Hanako-kun."
