    Evil spawns from somewhere.

    As it turns out, Ryoumen Sukuna had a mother who was ancient, kind, and preserved beyond human lifespans. In stories, it was said that she was benevolence incarnate, a direct opposite of her son. As such, she was brought into the Culling Games as a desperate countermeasure conducted under the high authority of Jujutsu, meant to contain the very beast unleashed.

    “Hey Nana.” Yoichi said conversationally. “Do you happen to know if Eighth has a shellfish allergy?”

    “Yep.” Annabeth pops off for the second time in as many minutes. It’ll be great, she thinks. He’ll try to give me a hug but won’t, I’ll pretend it’s not awkward, and we’ll spend the three-hour drive back to Gotham in deafening silence, both of us wishing we knew what to say. A killer Christmas Eve really, they should make Hallmark movies about my dad and me.

    Percy’s eyes widen, and Annabeth realizes she’s said everything aloud.

    “I didn’t know you grew up in Gotham,” Percy blessedly picks to comment. “Ever meet Batman?”

    “You know, everyone’s trying to make me scared of you. I’ve never been scared of anything, and I don’t think I know how to be,” Yuji admitted. He wasn’t sure why. It just felt like the thing to say.

    “Only the weak know fear,” Sukuna replied simply.

    “Are you saying I’m strong?” Yuji grinned around the coke bottle before he took another drink. It was funny in a bizarre way to be having such a casual conversation.

    Sukuna scoffed, “No. You’re just stupid.”

    It took Yuji a while. Mostly because he’d never known anyone like Sukuna, but eventually he understood. Whenever Sukuna called him stupid, he really meant ‘I love you.’
