Summary
"Dr. Robert Hare has created a scale to measure the severity of evil acts. Basing his analysis on the detailed biographies of more than six hundred violent criminals, Hare has created a twenty-two level hierarchy of so called evil behaviour, which loosely reflects the structure of Dante’s Inferno. He traces two salient personality traits that run the gamut from those who commit crimes of passion to perpetrators of the worst of acts: sadistic torture and murder. One trait is narcissism, so self-centred they are not able to care about their victims, the other is aggression, the use of power over another person to inflict humiliation, suffering, and death.
The more heinous the crime-and the more rational the criminal-the higher the killer is ranked on the scale. He named it 'Échelle de Cruauté', or 'The Scale of Evil'."
As he lay in his bed, staring up at the ceiling, Will Graham realised there needed to be a twenty third point tacked on the end of the scale. He was sure, somewhere beneath the flashes of memory and the dark calm that descended over his mind, the Ripper would appreciate being so unique as to require a classification all to himself.
