Fighting Friends

Summary:

So both Midoriya and Bakugou got into U.A.

And in the same class, no less.

Great.

At least they had buffers.

Notes:

Can we all just pretend that this is the start of the series? Because I actually really like how this turned out. Maybe it's because I was apprehensive writing it since the last one sucked so much. Maybe it's because it's an arc that I dislike so I had low expectations. Maybe it's because it's 6:00am right now. Maybe it's Maybelline.

If you can't tell, I'm glossing over the arcs that aren't focused on the Dekucrew/Bakusquad, since pretty much the same things happen as in canon. And no, I did not do research for this arc either, because I'm still salty about Bakugou unrealistically losing.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

So both Midoriya and Bakugou got into U.A. And in the same class, no less. Great.

At least they had buffers.

"Bakugou, even though we are friends, I can not turn a blind eye to misconduct!" Iida pleaded, gesturing to Bakugou's feet propped up on his desk with choppy hand motions.

"We're not friends, Glasses," Bakugou rolled his eyes, "And I read the damn handbook cover-to-cover, and it explicitly states that classroom policies are made by the homeroom teachers. Seeing as we haven't had our homeroom class yet, I'm not technically breaking any rules."

Iida snapped his mouth shut at that, face flushed in embarrassment. Meanwhile, Uraraka was busy laughing her head off at the exchange.

"You really are funny, Kacchan," the brunette playfully punched his shoulder, putting a bit more force than necessary. Accidentally. Probably.

"Shut up, Round Face."

From the other side of the room, Bakugou could feel a cold gaze burning at the back of his head. He turned to see a dual haired boy openly staring at them with unrestrained disdain. The blond met his heterochromatic eyes with a harsh glare of his own.

As for Midoriya, he was surprised to see both Kirishima and Sero in the middle of a conversation before greeting him, joined by a girl with bright pink skin and horns.

"Midobro!" Kirishima waved at him, sharp teeth revealed for all the world to see as he smiled at him.

"We were all just talking about the Entrance Exam and I mentioned how you took down that Zero-Pointer, and Kirishima recognised you from my story," Sero explained with a grin of his own.

"I wish I could've seen you guys in action!" The pink girl whined, dramatically draping herself over the desk she was sitting on.

"Oh, this is Ashido!" Kirishima's smile somehow grew even wider, "We went to the same middle school. Man, her quirk is like next level, she can produce acid!"

"Aww, thanks," Ashido teasingly elbowed his ribs before fully facing Midoriya, "Kiri's quirk is awesome, too! He can harden his body and..." She blinked owlishly as she trailed off, realising that Midoriya was viciously scribbling something down on his notebook, "...are you alright, dude?"

"Can she control the levels of acidity?" The freckles boy was mumbling incoherently, not even looking up from his notebook, "Does she produce it like Kacchan's nitroglycerin sweat? But her pores would be affected, too. Is her appearance a side affect of her quirk? Since acid usually emits smoke whenever it comes into contact with another object, maybe her scleras are black to adjust to it. What would the purpose of the horns be, though?"

While the other two boys cocked their heads as they waited for him, Ashido rose from her perch on the desk to look over the green haired boy's shoulder and see what he was writing. Apparently, he had already filled up an entire page with just theories on her quirk, and it didn't seem like he was going to stop anytime soon. After another page and a half, he finally realised that they were all looking at him and that she was practically resting her chin on his head, and promptly scrambled away, a bright pink blush spreading all the way down to his neck.

"Hey, we match!" She grinned, and soon he went from Ashido pink to Kirishima red.

Before he succumbed to heart failure, the warning bell rang and Iida told them all to get to their seats.

Aizawa—their homeroom teacher—seemed cool, if the way he could scare all the other students was any indication. And as a bonus, he said he didn't mind if Bakugou placed his feet on his desk. After the Quirk Apprehension whatever crap was over and done with, and much more tame class orientations followed, it was finally time for their first heroics class. The class they had all been waiting for. The start of the real fun.

At least until All Might assigned them their partners and opponents.

Bakugou was paired up with the gloomy guy who had been eyeballing him earlier—Todoroki or something—in the villain side. And they were up against Midoriya and some pink girl with black scleras on the hero group.

"I don't like you," Todoroki'd dead eyes were fixed on Bakugou.

"I don't give a damn whether or not you like me, Half'n'Half Bastard," the blond huffed in indignation as they walked to their assigned location.

"I'm not here to make friends," the dual haired boy continued, ignoring Bakugou's grumbling.

"Good for you," the shorter boy grunted in relief as the reached the room with the fake nuclear weapon, "Guard the bomb. You take care of Raccoon Eyes, I'm going after Deku."

And in an admirable act of maturity, Bakugou turned around and started patrolling the building, tuning out the taller boy's theatrical speech.

"Kacchan is most likely going to go after me personally," Midoriya muttered, mostly to himself, as they neared the entrance of the exercise location.

"Who's Kacchan?" Ashido tilted her head in confusion, skipping as they walked like they were on a lax stroll.

"The one with the grenade bracers," he explained, "He probably uses them to store his sweat—his quirk lets him produce nitroglycerin," after receiving a blank look from her, he expounded, "It creates explosions."

The pink girl blinked at him rapidly.

"Yeah, I think I'll let you handle him," she laughed, "I don't think my quirk and his quirk would mix well."

"We'd face a similar problem with Todoroki, though," the freckled boy frowned, "He's the son of Endeavour, so he must have some type of fire quirk."

"Huh?" Ashido recoiled in shock, "He's the son of number two? Wait, but according to Yaoyorozu, he was using ice during the Recommended Students' Test. Plus, during Aizawa-sensei's logical-ruse-pop-quiz-thing, he only used ice. If he had a fire quirk, we definitely would've seen it earlier."

The green haired boy paused to ponder on this new information for a minute. Or two. And a half. Not that she was counting. Eventually, he jolted up as an almost visible lightbulb was lit up overhead.

"I have a plan."

The battle between Bakugou and Midoriya was loud and destructive. However, the fight between Todoroki and Ashido looked like it was rehearsed.

The son of the second best pro hero coated layers and layers of ice onto the room for a terrain advantage. However, Ashido merely smoothened it with her acid and glided through the floor like a figure-skater. He tried trapping her feet, but the ice was dissolved in an instant. He attempted to encase her entire body in ice, but she just kept breaking free.

Furthermore, as her acid dripped onto the ground, it became slick and slippery with her quirk and suddenly she was the one with the terrain advantage. She slid and danced around almost leisurely.

The only thing good thing going on for Todoroki was that she was slower at producing acid than he was at producing ice. Even if she eventually escaped him, he could still throw up another ice wall before she could go after the bomb prop.

Eventually, the timer ran out, and the villains were deemed the winners. Although neither of them feel very victorious at the moment.

"Somehow, I think Ashido was the real MVP here," All Might mused out loud to the class during the aftermath as they discussed the outcome.

"But Bakugou and Todoroki won," Uraraka pouted.

"Uraraka, let him explain!" Iida was chopping his hands again. The number one pro hero started sweating as the students all turned to him expectantly.

"Y-Yaoyorozu!" All Might most certainly did not squeak as he called her, eliciting a surprised squeal, "Would you like to review the match?"

"Uh-um...yes, sir," she coughed awkwardly before clearing her throat, "Ashido did the best because she was able to use Todoroki's ice against him. She was able to adapt to the terrain and adjust it to her own advantage. Furthermore, if it had not been a simulation, she would have realistically been able to stall long enough for back up pro heroes to arrive."

Ashido preened at the praise. Kirishima clapped her back and Sero whispered his congratulations.

"Meanwhile, Bakugou and Midoriya were both careless in their fight when it came to property damage. While villains may not care much for that, making the infrastructure of the building unstable while still in it was thoughtless, especially if the bomb had been real."

Both Bakugou and Midoriya looked thoroughly humiliated at that. Bakugou glared daggers at his feet like they offended him and Midoriya stared at the floor in shame like a kicked puppy.

"As for Todoroki, he made the proper preparations by changing the terrain beforehand. However, he was overusing his right side and unwilling to use his left to thermoregulate. In fact, he could have finished the battle more efficiently if he had used his fire at all."

As All Might thanked her, Todoroki set his jaw. Yaoyorozu had been the only one in class that knew about his other quirk. He didn't blame her, since he had never even told her that he had wanted it to be kept a secret. Still, he couldn't help how his fists were clenched so tightly his wrists were shaking.

Midoriya was gawking at him almost analytically, as if mentally transcribing the black haired girl's comments and jotting down his own observations of the dual haired boy. Bakugou, all the while, was giving him the stink eye.

Soon enough, All Might sent the next teams on their way to a new building—since Bakugou and Midoriya may or may not have demolished most of their's—and Bakugou practically dragged Todoroki by the collar to the hallway outside the surveillance room.

"You could have beaten Raccoon Eyes," Bakugou spat. It wasn't a question. "But you handicapped yourself. Do you know how offensive that is? To her, to me, even to damn Deku!"

"We still won, didn't we?" Todoroki narrowed his eyes at him defensively, although he looked about as thrilled about their victory as the shorter boy did.

"We didn't earn it," the blond sneered, "We don't deserve to win unless we give it our all!"

"Well, what about you?" The taller boy snarked, "I thought you were supposed to take Midoriya out? How did you lose to a guy you call Deku?"

"The nerd didn't beat me, IcyHot," Bakugou scowled darkly, "And even if he did, at least I didn't let him. I would never do that to an opponent, even Deku. So why did you?"

"I will never use my left side," Todoroki seethed.

Having not signed up to hear out the heterochromatic boy's angsty monologue, Bakugou stormed through the corridor and made his way back to the surveillance room, paying no attention to his gaping and murmuring classmates.

Notes:

I used to be indifferent with Ashido and most of the Bakusquad members that weren't my explosive child, but they've grown on me so much from both reading and writing fics.

Also I had a real debate with myself regarding the results of the battle. Canonically, Midoriya and Ashido should've won but Todoroki'd be the MVP. Yet rationally, Bakugou and Todoroki would win. However, I didn't want to reward Todoroki for holding himself back.

I'm a little scared of Todoroki fans coming after me for making him lose and characterising him as a bit of a prick, but that was not my intention. Todoroki is not being smug, he is being Edgy and Extra.

He laments on his tragic backstory and Bakugou could not care less because all he sees is some douchebag half-assing his way through their first heroics exercise ever. They're both a little unreasonable, and that's what's so fun about their dynamic. (Plus this sets up my plan for the Sports Festival Arc WHICH I'M SO EXCITED FOR HENCE WHY I'M RUSHING THROUGH THE FIRST SEASON.)

The next part of the series will focus on USJ and the last member of each posse shall be introduced!
