A Moment's Respite

Summary:

In the short moment between dawn and sunrise, Jose wakes up to something they rarely witness anymore, now that they are locked in the Oletus Manor. There is a gap in the thick fog and little bit of sunlight seeps through. He stays awake to marvel at the flickering gold, and to watch Kevin still sleeping contently beside him.

I finished this at 4 am because I couldn't get this scene out of my head. Something soft and shamelessly self indulgent, not beta read because why would I write things at reasonable hour. Just kidding, I don't have a habit of writing at this ungodly hours.

Work Text:

Jose was the first to wake up, slowly blinking in the light seeping through the curtains, blinding his bleary eyes for a moment. It was rare for sunlight to reach the mansion through the thick fog it was draped in, almost like a protective spell to keep anyone from entering the Oletus manor. But as well as it kept intruders at bay, it kept everyone inside from ever leaving.

Kevin moved in his sleep beside him, and Jose turned his eyes from the window. Beautifully as the lens flare scattered into the room, the sight beside Jose still captivated his attention over the prism of color spilled across the floor.

Jose smiled absently, pressing his lips on Kevin’s temple in a chaste kiss. During peaceful moments like these, he could pretend that they weren’t just stuck in a loop: Playing a lethal game of cat and mice while, their hope of escaping ran thinner with each passing day, grains of sand, slipping through the gaps between their fingers.

Kevin hadn’t stirred yet still, and Jose was content watch him sleep, while his thoughts roamed. He propped himself up with one arm, his remaining free hand combing through Kevin’s hair in slow, loving motions. It was odd how at peace he felt, like everything was a little less dreary just by having this man at his side. Kevin’s expression tensed and Jose stopped moving, worrying he had disturbed the other’s sleep. He didn’t dare to move again, until after the cowboy’s face relaxed, his body growing lax with a long exhale.

Jose returned to gently brushing his hand over the top of Kevin’s head, losing himself in his thoughts and the comforting motions again once more.

The sun was just starting it’s ascent over the horizon when Jose woke. By the time that sunlight started to shine in more earnestly, drawing patterns on the bare skin of Kevin’s shoulders, the other man finally stirred.

Jose watched him try to blink the sleep from his eyes but going back to sleep still seemed to allure him, judging from the way that Kevin’s features scrunched up at the bright light.

“Why are the curtains drawn?” The cowboy drawled sleepily, burrowing his face in the white silk of Jose’s shirt to hide from the light.

“They always are,” The first officer replied with a hum. “It’s just that rare that we get a look at the sun.”

Kevin lifted his arm over Jose’s waist, snuggling closer and Jose let his hand slowly slide down Kevin’s hair. He trailed his fingers along his scalp, and across the base of his neck where the muscle connected to his shoulder. His touch followed the contours of Kevin’s upper arm until he couldn’t comfortably do so further, with Kevin’s arm still curled around his own middle.

The cowboy unfurled his hold on him then, to bring his own hand together with Jose’s lacing their fingers together. Kevin brought their hands to his lips, earning him an exasperated but fond look from the other man.

“Good morning,” Jose said, looking into Kevin’s eyes and a smile still played at his lips as Kevin kissed each of his knuckles one by one, before returning the greeting warmly. Jose’s heart fluttered happily at the silly performance, but even more so, at seeing Kevin look so unbothered by everything. He looked genuinely happy.

“Do we have to get up yet?” the cowboy murmured, letting their hands sink but not letting go of Jose’s.

‘Yes,’ Jose should have said. On any other morning he would have, and then he would have dragged Kevin out of the bed, rolling his eyes while the other would have complained, but started getting ready, nonetheless.

“No,” Jose said instead, and for the shortest moment he could have imagined confusion in Kevin’s eyes, but it was gone as soon as he blinked. Jose let Kevin pull him back under the covers, and if they drifted back to sleep, comforted by each other’s presence and body heat, no one would have to know. And perhaps it was alright to indulge in the moment’s reverie every once in a while.

Notes:

I have little more to add beside what I already said, hopefully this wasn't littered with typos. My brain wouldn't let me sleep before I got this out of my system, so take a short one this time.
