Hizashi vs The Spider From Hell

Summary:

Hizashi hates insects. Shota comes to the rescue.

Notes:

My first time writing a BNHA fic, but hopefully not my last! This is unbeta'd but am open to constructive criticism and feedback.

I headcanon that Hizashi became hard of hearing during his childhood due to lack of control over his quirk, and that he learned Japanese Sign Language as a result. He knows some ASL as well but is most fluent in JSL, Japanese, and English. Shota picked up on JSL in high school but is not as fluent as Hizashi. He mainly uses JSL with Hizashi whenever Hizashi's not wearing his hearing aids, or when it's hard to talk (like during a noisy battle). Hizashi doesn't identify as Deaf since he grew up with hearing parents and spends most of his time with hearing people, but he does participate in the Hard of Hearing & Deaf community.

I imagine Hizashi's hearing aids are specially designed to amplify quiet noises but block out his sonic blasts (like the electronic ear muffs used by hunters). But, given the daily abuse they go through, they need to be charged each night. Go figure.

Oh, and Hizashi hosts a morning radio show called Good Morning Japan each morning before school. Shota usually patrols later at night than Hizashi does and sleeps in until just before class starts.

Italics are words communicated through sign language, while bold is texted words.

Also, I'm thinking that the spider makes an appearance in the commentator booth at the Sports Festival next...

Chapter 1: The First Appearance of The Spider From Hell

Chapter Text

Bzzzzz. Bzzzzz. Bzzzzz.

The vibrations in his pillow rouse Hizashi from a delightful dream about dancing penguins. He sighs and opens his eyes. It’s dark. He gropes his pillow with one hand to turn off the alarm, puts on his glasses, then checks his phone.

4:50am.

He glances at the other side of the bed. Good, Shota is still sleeping. Or, at least, he’s still curled up under the blankets. Hizashi focuses his eyes on the covers. Yes, the blankets are slowly moving up and down. He’s definitely still sleeping. Only a few strands of black hair peek out. Hizashi smiles.

His husband is so cute.

Hizashi leans back against his pillow and swipes through the notifications on his phone.

Kayama, 22:02: Room 304 at Tokyo Hilton.

Kayama, 22:02: Ren Ito, cell 080-1424-9830.

Looks like Kayama also sent a pic of Ren’s ID card.

Kayama, 1:10: Back home. Had fun : )

Hizashi types out Awesome! Glad you’re safe. We can debrief over lunch haha.

Nothing particularly exciting on the news and the weather report. And….it’s 5:00am. Time to get up. Hizashi yawns and gets out of bed. He unplugs his phone and reaches for the glowing green light of his hearing aid charger.

And freezes.

A dark shape on the charger.

A

SPIDER.

!!!

Hizashi flinches as the light comes on. He leaps back instinctively, away from the nightstand, and squints. Shoot. He must have shrieked without realizing it.

Shota, dear Shota, with his hair a tangled mess around his face, signs It’s ok. I’ll take care of the spider. I know you have to go to the station soon.

Hizashi signs back I love you. I’m sorry for waking you up and scurries to the bathroom. When he emerges, with his hair spiked up, he sees the lights are off. His hearing aids are on the floor outside the bathroom door. Thanks, Shota. He slips the hearing aids in and blinks.

It’s always surreal going from feeling each breath to hearing each breath.

By the time Hizashi settles into his office at the radio station, he’s forgotten all about the spider.
