Chapter Text
Mobei Jun has never experienced what it’s like to be loved, all those around him only either showered him with praises or cowers in fear, never love.
Mobei Jun doesn’t crave for it, for to crave something means you already tasted what it’s like, and Mobei Jun never felt love. He once thought he knew what it meant, being with his uncle Linguang Jun most of the time instead of his parents, but he knows better now.
He isolated himself after that, resigned to believe he needs no one in his life. He rules, that’s what he knows and that’s what he needs, nothing more, nothing less. He was built for ruling, and no one dares to betray him.
That’s why when that little scum of a peak lord Shang Qinghua chose to do the unforgivable, he didn't even hesitate for a moment to go for his neck. He always had his suspicions at first, noticing the way the human tends to overdo his actions towards his master, as if hiding something. Always wearing a smile that could fool everyone in the room, almost everyone excluding Mobei Jun.
Mobei Jun resigned to this fate, the one where the only thing that kept his subordinates loyal to him was fear. And fear he planted on each and every one of his people.
He does, however, wonder what it’s like to be loved, wonder how it feels like. Is it warm? Is it safe?
Is it home?
But he never even experienced home, he only experienced a palace full of servants scurrying around and parents always busy and forgetting they have a son. So what does home feel like?
In reality, he never really questioned any of these, in fact he never actually even thought about wondering. Mobei Jun wasn’t the one to talk or even just wallow in emotions, no, he was designed to act now, think never.
But then something happened to his lord, Luo Binghe. He seems skittery than usual, very unfitting for the ruler of the two realms. He once disappeared for a week with Xin Mo by his side. Mobei Jun once wandered about Luo Binghe’s palace one night and overheard a conversation between two servants. They should be killed for talking about their lord behind his back, but Mobei Jun’s curious too, curious to what has been bugging his lord to the point of isolating himself in his chambers for two weeks already.
Thanks to his cunning aura, Mobei Jun managed to hide himself from the two and began eavesdropping. He can only make up a few words but it’s clear enough to understand what they’re talking about.
“... hasn’t eaten…”
“...something about bringing back someone!”
“It’s been two weeks, surely…..”
He can’t hear the exact word one demon has been spewing about since it actually has the decency to whisper, unlike the loud one.
“Then maybe it’s someone important, someone like…”
This time, the loud demon decided to whisper AT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE CONVERSATION, THE AUDACITY!
Mobei Jun was busy deducing who that very important person was for his lord to go through lengths to just bring someone back when the quiet one finally snapped and shouted.
“... long dead!”
“And that never stopped our lord before! His great majesty managed to sustain a limbless body for years, surely he can bring someone back from the dead!”
And with that Mobei Jun could only think of one person.
It’s almost amusing really, to see Luo Binghe so frustrated and lost the moment that person died. As if he never expected him to die and just continue suffering like that. And now, he’s being frantic again, all caused by the same exact person he killed years ago.
He doesn’t understand this half-demon sometimes, he wishes someone gone but then goes absolutely feral when said person finally fulfilled his wish. How can a demon have so many emotions dedicated to one person, and a human at that really irks Mobei Jun. It probably has something to do with his human side, but who can blame him. Humans are made to be the weaker creatures compared to demons. They strive and survive based on emotions, a feeling deemed as the weakest link of a demon.
The demon servants are still trying to comprehend the situation but Mobei Jun already got what he wanted to hear so he made his presence known by killing the loud one with a spike made of ice. The room was painted dark red and the other demon froze in his place even without the use of Mobei Jun’s powers.
“Clean the room and speak of this conversation to no one” he briefly instructed and walked away feeling satisfied with what he discovered.
