Unspoken rules

Summary:

There was always a smell of tea in the air and there was always a fight in between each time they saw each other. There was no need for greetings or formalities the moment silver blue eyes met eternal black and once again, genius against genius recognized their opponent's strength and gave their all to win.

They would mentally jot down the results of the battle in their heads and just walk away, each to their respective school, like an impromptu ritual that had eventually stuck.

…But for once in her life, Momo really wanted to break those unspoken rules.

Work Text:

Saying that Yaoyorozu Momo and Saiko Intelli were friends was a mistake, thinking that it meant that they didn’t know each other was a much worse one.

Different schools, different friendships and personalities that couldn't be further apart from each other, it was easy to think why one could have reached that conclusion.

What was it that united them? Maybe not even themselves knew it.

There must be something in the way their wits inevitably competed in the moment both met or how pure logic was not enough to completely analyze Yaoyorozu and vice versa, Saiko's selfishness made certain plans almost unthinkable.

Attracted to each other, gravitating like two stars, spinning around the same common center of mass in the shape of their feet dancing in circles as they calculated when the moment of the explosion would be.

Yaoyorozu and Intelli knew each other, of course. How could they not? Years of experience in battling each other had forged an unbreakable bond of secret admiration for the opponent, but at the same time, those had also caused the distance between them to increase a little more and more.

At some point, her head had a special compartment dedicated to the information she had on Saiko Intelli and in the folder with her name she had written down more than a few things that were not strictly necessary for the battle. Before Momo knew it, it was hard not to think what extravagant plan Saiko would surprise her without a silly smile on her face and some strange fantasy running through her mind.

Her hair of some color between light blue, lavender and pale gray immovable from behind as Yaoyorozu approaches her and the smile full of pride disappears when she turns around and realizes that once again, Creati is the one who has won. Then the smile returns, in the shape of a perfect crescent, which satisfied with a good fight, proceeds to remove her golden monocle to clean it.

Only that, instead of doing so, Saiko approaches her. The trace of a malicious gleam in her eyes, Momo’s breath catches in her throat as her lips get closer to hers and her soft hair tickles her burning cheeks, Intelli always smiling, always so proud, she’s hard to lose sight of when their sighs intersect and Yaoyorozu doesn't know what to do with herself after seeing the expression reflected in her iris.

Her long lashes close gently. Her lips millimeters from hers. And a gasp drowned by her pillow when she wakes up frustrated that the intoxicating reality is nothing more than a dream makes the silent scream that escapes from the depths of her being.

Yaoyorozu is fed up with this sick cycle of unanswered feelings in her chest and after consulting with her friends, a plan begins to form in her head.

If Saiko was asked if she was interested in love, then the logical answer would be no.

If someone asked her the same thing, with Yaoyorozu Momo in the same room, then her flushed cheeks would betray her answer.

She had a couple of female fans at Seiai Academy and more than one girl had confessed their love to her, but none like Yaoyorozu had managed to capture her attention.

Intelligent, in the way a few could become without a quirk to facilitate the process. Beautiful, as if the goddess of the moon herself had risen specifically to create the perfection of her being. Kind, in a way she didn't quite understand.

It was the calculated uncertainty that Momo added to her equations that made them much more entertaining even though the brand of tea she was drinking wasn’t the ideal one. The excited smile she gave her after winning and reminded her that Yaoyorozu was a year younger, embarrassing her more than Intelli could manage when she thought that it was for a reason that she looked so cute. The strong grip of her hands, which didn’t hesitate to get dirty to help and get into action, unlike her who sat in the same place while the others fought.

She was a hero like Saiko could never be, but this was not inherently bad.

She could sit down, like now, and enjoy a good cup of tea as her cute Momo's face filled with determination as she gave orders to her friends, prompting her to plan an instant counter-strategy to command whom she supposed she could call friends too.

Saiko only had one more year to see her this way before she graduated and finally became a professional hero, though lately she wondered if this was really the job she wanted.

For now, she was going to admire her from afar without daring to break the arrogant persona she had built and lose her pride in the process.

"Saiko Intelli"

Her heart gave a leapt when he heard her voice say her name so suddenly and so loudly.

At what point had she lost sight of her? It wouldn't be easy to win if her teammates had been defeated, but even so Saiko took another sip of her tea, plans forming in her head as she stood up from her seat and analyzed the figure of the girl in front of her.

In the two years since they met, the muscles in her arms had become more noticeable, her black hair unrulier, and the look on her face gentler.

She didn’t move from her place, red on her cheeks, Saiko didn’t understand why she hadn’t yet attacked to reach the prize behind her and win the fight.

"I like you, please go out on a date with me."

All the plans and equations in her head were immediately erased upon hearing her determined voice and her cheeks burned red as Yaoyorozu approached her.

"What do you say, Intelli-san?"

With a gallant smile on her face and her voice being much softer when looking at her with affection, it was impossible that her response was other than...

"…Alright"

She heard the sound of the loudspeaker declaring that Creati's team had won and the disappointed lament of her schoolmates, yet the embarrassing smile that Saiko was trying to hide between her hands was impossible to erase as Momo's cheerful laugh filled the space and broke out in a single cut the unspoken rules between them.

Saiko Intelli had never thought dating Yaoyorozu Momo would be so easy.

But once again, emotion-based actions were never her forte.
