Chapter Text
In the beginning, there was light.
It bloomed in the dark and spread like wildfire, awaking all corners of the universe.
Sparks burst and formed new light. Stars. All different colors and masses; filling the darkness with their everlasting glow.
Gems and stones grew from these stars. They swam in rotation through the sea of black, bringing life to the universe.
Through time, many stars and rocks grew across the universe. They formed planets and moons and systems that traveled through waves of light and gas. The universe was vast and bright.
Amongst them lived a small system; a milky band of light that swirled through the dark. It homed many planets and many stars, some bigger than others. They lived harmoniously with one another, as a family.
A small, young star sat at the edge of the universe in the dark. With his feet dangling over the edge, he watched the blue and green planet twirl gracefully beneath him. It glows brightly and brings a fond smile to his face.
Earth, they call it. What a funny name. He watches a woman push a child on some sort of swinging contraption. The child laughs joyfully as they’re lifted into the air.
He watches a man ride a big machine on the blue sea beneath him. The sea is rough and menacing, but the man presses forward with tenacity.
He watches a boy. A small, feeble boy with a dark head and a pale complexion. The boy was always alone and looked up to where the star sat in his place. He wondered if he could see him up in his post.
He shone a little brighter whenever the boy would look at him, a way of letting him know that he was there and he saw him too. The boy always smiled when looking up at the star.
As the boy grew, the little star watched over him, shining brightly for him only. The star’s brothers and sisters would laugh at him sometimes. They wondered why he was so interested in such a small and weak creature.
The little one never minded their words. The boy was special to him, and he wanted to let him know.
Sometimes the boy was sad, and he wouldn’t smile no matter how brightly the star shined. On those nights, the boy would sing to him. The star wanted nothing more than to tell the boy how beautiful his songs were.
As time went on, the star grew anxious and curious. He would always watch the humans, and they looked so happy. He yearned to be with them, to do the things they did and sing with the boy.
‘Mama, why can’t I sing and dance like them? They don’t sit in one place, they walk and run and play. Why must we sit and only watch?’ The star would ask to the moon.
‘Run like the humans? What purpose do we have for that?’
‘You say silly things brother.’
The star would pout at his brothers and sisters' words. Why must he ask so many questions?
‘Our beauty designates us to our sea little one. Our duty is to be admired, and light the human’s path should they need us.’ The moon would say.
The star understood the moon. She was the wisest of them all, her words were absolute. But still, the star would look down at the earth and long.
‘But I’m not as bright as Sirius, nor as beautiful as Uma. Why must I only watch from afar?’
‘It’s because he watches that little human.’
‘He’s fond of him.’
‘His smiles bring me joy and he sings beautiful songs. I want to be with him. I want to tell him how wonderful he is. He is sad sometimes...how can he be sad when he’s filled with such beauty?’ The star huffs.
‘Humans are weak and feeble creatures, little one. Their lives are short and delicate. They do bad things to one another, and sometimes they are left with a sadness to follow.’ The moon replied.
The star didn’t understand the human’s or the earth, but he loved them. It was their duty to protect them from the dark.
The star wanted to protect the boy, but he could only do so much from above.
‘I will go to him! I will find him and protect him. I’ll tell him how beautiful he is, then he won’t be sad!’
The star stands for the very first time on his platform. He walks to the edge and peers at the earth beneath him. It twirls gracefully and invitingly.
‘You can’t go to the earth brother!’
‘What will you do?’
‘Our duty is to shine!’
His brothers and sisters called at him, but he paid them no mind. They know not of the greatness he will do, but surely they’ll understand with time.
He looks up to the moon. She glows heavenly, warming his face with her wisdom and grace.
‘May I go to him, mother? I want to be with him. I will show him how great you are and how beautiful the earth is.’
The moon smiled warmly at the star.
‘You are a curious thing, my little one. See it that you tell him your words and love him for all of your life. Be not afraid for I, and we, will always look after you.’
The star smiled lovingly to the moon. He looks down to the earth below him, how small it is yet holds so much life and wonder.
He looks out to the galaxy. His brothers and sisters shine all around him, encouraging him to take the leap. Joy fills him to the core, making him shine the brightest he ever has in his lifetime.
With one last glance at the moon, he closes his eyes and lets gravity overcome him and bring him to the magical earth he so desperately wanted to see.
The star lifts his feet over the empty, quiet space, and falls.
