Work Text:

1.

The first time Yoongi agrees to be Jeongguk’s fake boyfriend is at a Christmas party for his job.

The term agreed being used loosely. They were sitting in the living room, watching television when Jeongguk casually said, “Be my boyfriend for a couple of hours tonight at my boss’ party?”

Yoongi, absentmindedly, said yes as he shoved another slice of pizza in his mouth because it’s Jeon Jeongguk and Yoongi would do anything for the little guy. Three hours later when he’s rummaging through Yoongi’s closet pulling out an outfit to match his own is when it clicks for Yoongi what he agreed to do. He tried to back out but Jeongguk put on his best pouty eyes and Yoongi was slipping on the matching version of  Jeongguk’s hideous christmas sweater. He didn’t even know he still had that in the closet, hoping that he had burned it last christmas.

Jeongguk vaguely explained to Yoongi on the car ride over to his boss’ house that he didn’t want to show up alone because of the people in his office always bothering him he made up a boyfriend. Which, in Yoongi’s opinion was ridiculous, but Jeongguk promised him it was the only way to get people off his back. Yoongi shrugged, knowing that he had no room to judge given that he was currently en route to help keep the rouge alive and well.

When they walked into the party, Jeongguk grabbed Yoongi’s hand tightly in his own and paraded him around to his coworkers who cooed over how cute the two of them were together. Jeongguk told Yoongi that they just had to act all lovey-dovey and get people to really think they were dating. Once that was finished, their mission was complete.

Yoongi was never worried about that part. Maybe getting more lovey-dovey, but convincing people that they worked was never his worry about this. Their chemistry is undeniable, Yoongi can honestly attest given how alike they are and how well they balance each other out. When Jeongguk promises Yoongi some expensive beef as he hands him another flute of champagne for coming out with him, Yoongi can’t help but feel like this wasn’t as bad of an idea as he thought.

2.

The second time Yoongi agrees to be Jeongguk’s boyfriend is to meet up with some friends who apparently saw the two of them snuggled up on someone’s instagram from the party a week ago. Well, one of the friends saw, told the entire squad, and now Yoongi’s being subject to interact with people outside of his own free-will on a Saturday instead of being in bed where he wants to be.

But Jeongguk promised him that it would the last time, that he didn’t think that his friends would care or even see that he was with him that night. Yoongi knew better, he figured something like this would happen, but he’d hoped that Jeongguk would just tell the truth by now. But yet again, Min Yoongi is a fool, and Jeongguk pulled his best tricks on him; puppy eyes, pouty lips, and adorable charm to get Yoongi to agree to come out for a couple of hours if it’ll make him happy.

(I’ll cry, hyung. You know I’ll do it if you don’t help me.

Jeez, don’t--don’t do that, alright? You know I can’t stand it when you cry…)

He hits it off with the friends without an issue; Yoongi now seeing why Jeongguk would have wanted him there given that all of his other friends are dating each other. Jeongguk’s been a perpetual third wheel for two couples for like the last year after his friend Jimin and Namjoon decided to finally date each other after years of mutual idiotic pining according to Seokjin, the one who’s dating Hoseok and Taehyung.

Thankfully none of Yoongi’s friends are coupled, but he can understand the awkwardness Jeongukk must have felt.

They grill him for all of five minutes before the one named Hoseok decides that he’s passed their tests and invites him into their friend group forever. Taehyung joking tells Yoongi that he’s joined a blood pack and Yoongi mentions that he’s not surprised to learn that Jeongguk’s into something like that. Jeongguk lightly hits him, and Yoongi smirks back, enjoying the banter between everyone at the table.

Yoongi feels oddly comfortable and at ease like this, pressed against Jeongguk’s side as they talk about life and whatnot. Yoongi keeps answering questions about himself here and there from his friends and ends up caught when they ask him about what he loves most about Jeongguk.

Jeongguk looks surprised himself, staring at Yoongi with his bambi eyes.

“I just--” Yoongi starts slowly, feeling the heat rise to his cheeks as he looks at all the eyes on him, “I mean, there's so much to love...I uhm," he pauses thoughtfully, but it isn't hard to think of something honest immediately. "His heart. I love his heart, the most. He wears it on his sleeve, and I think that’s one of the bravest things I’ve seen someone do… I know I couldn’t do it, at first anyway. It should have been really hard for me to trust him, but there was something about Jeongguk that made it easy. Loving him, came so easy. I feel like most people think that because I’m a pretty quiet kind of guy, I’m an asshole, but Jeongguk didn’t. He still approached me and talked to me like, almost as if like, he’d known me forever? And that’s when I knew that we’d be something special, whether it was friends or not. And lucky for me,” He smiles, and grabs Jeongguk’s hand, kissing the back of it, “he chose to be with me, so yeah…” He trails off, feeling like he’s going to explode from the embarrassment at any given moment.

He doesn’t miss the blush on Jeongguk’s cheeks either but chooses not to point it out. The butterflies in his stomach won’t relent, and when Jeongguk let’s go of his hand, he ignores the mild disappointing feeling. His friends coo over how cute they are, how sweet Yoongi is, and how he seems pretty perfect for someone like Jeongguk. Yoongi couldn’t really bring himself to deny that--in retrospect, thinking how it would be to actually date Jeon Jeongguk.

That maybe, being in a relationship with Jeongguk wouldn’t be so bad in the grand scheme of things. That maybe the comfortable weight of Jeongguk’s hand around his waist was something that he’d like to feel more often. And to see that kind of blinding smile directed at him more often, the charm and delight of Jeongguk being focused solely on him like tonight. But those thoughts left his mind just as quickly as they came when they left the restaurant for the evening and Yoongi dropped him off at his own apartment--Jeongguk thanking him for pretending and saying ‘The kiss was a fantastic touch! We really got them!’ and saying that he was his best hyung before heading inside.

Yoongi wouldn’t dare try to place why that felt weird for him to say all of a sudden.

3.

The third time Yoongi agrees to be Jeongguk’s boyfriend is because of his brother calling. More like, his brother calling to tell Jeongguk that he needed to come home for Christmas this year since he was getting engaged to his girlfriend. Jeongguk didn't seem too thrilled about the prospect, annoyed even. Yoongi was just minding his business in his room, watching a movie on his laptop when Jeongguk came waltzing in with his phone in hand and a determined look in his eye.

He really needed to change the locks or something.

Jeongguk plops into his bed, pulling out his phone and huffing. "I'm calling my brother to tell him that I'm just as happily in love as he is, so all you gotta do is look cute and smile a bit and we'll be fine."

Yoongi had about three seconds to look confused before he was facetiming Jeongguk's older brother. They made introductions, his brother also bringing his fiance into the mix. The conversation was stilted and a bit weird given that Yoongi wasn't exactly open for conversing right now, but he held strong for the sake of Jeongguk. When Jeongguk finally left the room to talk to his brother in peace, Yoongi really tried not to eavesdrop but it's such a small apartment, it was inevitable.

He heard Jeongguk talking about happy he was to be dating Yoongi, how happy Yoongi made him, and how he was fine. He heard him talk about how alike he and Yoongi were, how they just worked with each other. How happy he was to have met someone like Yoongi and wished that he'd met him sooner. That it felt like they were soulmates sometimes, which was funny because Yoongi could say the same thing. When his brother asked him if he loved him, Yoongi couldn't listen anymore. He went back to watching his movie, pushing the hopeful thoughts of a 'yes' to his question into the back of his mind.

When Jeongguk comes back into his room later, he asks him if the things that he said that other night with his friends were true. The things that he loved about him, and without hesitation, Yoongi answers 'yes'. Jeongguk looks at him for a moment, as if he's going to say something--some words stuck on the tip of his tongue, but then he just nods and sits beside Yoongi on the bed, telling him to share the snacks and turn the volume up louder cause their favorite anime wasn't going to watch itself.

4.

The fourth time Yoongi agrees to be Jeongguk’s boyfriend again is to visit his parents back home in Busan. Jeongguk figured that since the first couple of times went so well that Yoongi wouldn’t mind doing it again to help his best dongsaeng out. The newly formed group of seven’s treasured maknae who they would all kill for if he so much as hinted at something being wrong.

And while Jeongguk wasn’t wrong, Yoongi wasn’t sure if he wanted to do it again. But then Jeongguk promised that it would be the last time, that he had told his parents about him because he told his brother and that he wouldn’t have to help again afterward, so Yoongi agreed to do it--this is the last time.

“Are you still sure about this? We can go back to the hotel or like, just pretend to be sick and go to the restaurant you like.”

Yoongi shakes his head, gathering the gifts from the trunk of the car. It was too late to go back now. They’d come too far now to back out. A 1-hour flight to Busan from Seoul, a two-hour car ride to his province, a 45-minute nap in the hotel, and a 20-minute drive to his parent’s house. Yoongi had too much time to convince himself that this was actually a good idea.

That this actually made sense, so there was no going back now. Yoongi’s been committed to playing this role for far too long.

“It’s fine. Let’s impress your parents, and make your brother's fiance jealous of how awesome we are,” Yoongi says, trying to lull his own nerves. Jeongguk grabs his free-hand, linking their gloved hands together, and walks up to his parent’s front door with a shy smile. He knocks and his mom opens the door with a wide smile, looking happier than ever to see her son. She pulls him into a hug immediately and then pulls a surprised Yoongi into a hug that could’ve crushed his bones if she wasn’t such a petite woman.

They walked into the house, putting the gifts under the tree and taking off their layers. Jeongguk’s father immediately comes over to Yoongi and sizes him up. He playfully asks Yoongi what his intentions are for his son, and Yoongi freezes on the spot. For some reason, he didn’t think he’d have to talk. Yoongi’s nerves sky-rocket before his father breaks out into the same charming smile that Jeongguk also does and opens his arms wide for Yoongi to step into for a big hug.

His brother and his fiance say their hellos to Yoongi as well, and he's polite all the same. They eat an amazing dinner that his parents cooked and laugh about family things that Yoongi doesn't get but it's alright. He tries not to feel some type of way when his parents hand him his own ornament to hang on the tree or point out the stocking that they made him hung on the walls with everyone else’s. He can’t help the big grin he gets when he sees it all. (And that pointedly, his brother's fiance did not have a stocking, but whatever.)

If Yoongi spends the entire night loving how he learns more about Jeongguk and his family, getting maybe a little too close, learning a little too much information than Jeongguk may have wanted, he doesn’t say anything. He just soaks it up. He enjoys hearing stories about Jeongguk’s childhood and his wid antics as a kid. When Jeongguk shows him his childhood room, he doesn’t think about how warm it makes him to be able to see it; to be trusted enough to get a private little crash course on Jeongguk’s life.

He also doesn’t think about how at peace he's felt all night, sitting close to Jeongguk in his parents' living room on their couch while watching endless cheesy-romantic christmas movies because it’s a tradition, and no Yoongi didn’t have a choice in leaving, according to his mother. If he and Jeongguk held hands under the blankets, keeping each other close, Yoongi wouldn’t acknowledge it. Or the strategically placed mistletoe around his parents' house that they somehow keep ending up underneath that Yoongi can’t bring himself to be upset about as things have escalated from a light kiss on the hand, the cheek, a quick peck, to something more meaningful, something slower and caring with every soft press of their lips together.

Jeongguk’s mother looked mighty proud of herself by the time they left for the night.

Back at the hotel, Yoongi wouldn’t say anything when the kisses kept coming without the mistletoe. How Jeongguk seemed to know how to take his breath away with every kiss, every touch, and every sound. Yoongi wouldn’t say anything about how when they laid curled in the bed together, bodies close, how his heart was thumping out of his chest and begging him to confess to Jeongguk.

Or about how he thought in the darkness of the night, when he assumes Jeongguk thought he was asleep, he’d heard a softly whispered, ‘I love you’, before falling back asleep.

5.

The fifth time Yoongi agrees to be Jeongguk’s boyfriend is when Yoongi wakes up to Jeongguk beside him all curled up in the hotel comforter. Except for this time, Yoongi asks him. He has an arm thrown around Yoongi’s waist, his cuddling keeping Yoongi close and secure in Jeongguk’s arms. Yoongi curls into the warmth, taking in Jeongguk’s beautiful features as his mind runs rampant with thoughts of the sweet, loving, and kind boy before him.

It didn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that the racing of his heart, the blush on his cheeks, the warmth inside of him was the blooming feelings he had for Jeongguk. And from how last week went at his parents, Yoongi thinks, just maybe that Jeongguk might love him back too. He’s been spending so much more time here that Yoongi’s been tempted to just tell him to move in with him. To come and be with him forever.

He isn’t sure how long he laid there looking at Jeongguk, just drinking him in before Jeongguk wakes up, looking slightly startled to see Yoongi staring at him, but just huffs a soft laugh and teasingly tells him to take a picture, his cute lisp prominent in the morning.

Yoongi indulges him, grabbing his phone and taking sleepy photos of Jeongguk as he protests because he looks silly. Jeongguk’s smile is like magic to behold, his laugh something that Yoongi wants to keep hearing, and his presence so comforting and addicting--something that he wants to keep waking up to, keep seeing all day and night, and snuggle with on his off days, kiss on his good days.

“Will you be my boyfriend?” Yoongi finds himself saying, vocalizing his thoughts, as lays next to him.

Jeongguk pauses, opening his eyes, and looks at Yoongi with a confused expression.

“Sure, hyung.” He replies sleepily, “I mean, you did me a solid a lot this past month, so the least I can do is help you out.”

“No,” Yoongi shakes his head and scoots closer to Jeongguk, trying his best not to bolt out of his room. “I mean, for real this time. Will you--will you be my boyfriend? Like, actually be mine.”

Jeongguk looks at Yoongi for what feels like an eternity, his eyes searching Yoongi’s own but for once in Yoongi’s life, he doesn’t look away. He lets Jeongguk see deep into him, to understand that he’s serious, that he loves him, and that--that this is something he wants. That Jeongguk is someone that he wants--

“I’ve been waiting for you to ask me that for forever, hyung,” he softly mumbles and Yoongi feels happiness spread throughout his body. He can’t help the shy smile he gets, wrapping his arms around Jeongguk in return and kissing the top of his messy hair.

Jeongguk giggles, his soft smile adorning his lips as he leans forward and kisses Yoongi softly. He has a shy smile when he pulls back, but wraps his arm around Yoongi tighter as he pulls him as close as possible.

“I’m actually really glad that I lied about having a boyfriend,” Jeongguk admits honestly, a couple of months later when they moved into a new apartment together.

“Me too,” Yoongi admits, giving Jeongguk a soft kiss and snuggling closer to him.
