Early Morning Coffee

Summary:

"A hand reached around him and came up to keep the pot steady, while the other one took hold of the one Denki was using to open the cabinet.

"You're too adorable", a deep voice sounded right next to his ear.

As if his face wasn't warm enough by now.

"But don't worry, I drink my coffee black"."

After a restless night, Denki resorts to getting up and making coffee. He didn't expect anyone else to be up and in the kitchen that early in the morning.

Work Text:

Anyway, Denki was just about to pour himself a freshly made cup of coffee, softly humming the pokemon theme song, as suddenly a light rustle and then rough clearing of a throat made him startle and almost jump lightly.

He put his cup and the pot down and turned around slowly, just to be startled again by just how close the intruding figure, standing maybe a meter from him, had already gotten to him, considering he didn't even notice them entering the dorms' kitchen.

The figure, which he could now identify as Shinsou Hitoshi, looked slightly apologetic for a second, before continuing to stare him down with half-lidded, tired eyes and one slightly raised eyebrow.

Denki noticed how he appeared to be mostly dressed already, jeans and a purple shirt. His violet hair was quite messy, but like always, somehow decent and orderly at the same time. He suddenly felt a bit self-conscious, still only dressed in loose sweatpants and an also too big, washed out graphic anime Tee. He didn't expect anyone else to be up at this early hour on a Sunday so he hadn't bothered to get ready and he averted his gaze to the floor, silently cursing himself in his head.

Another throat-clearing managed to rip him out of his thoughts, as he raised his head in a jerky motion and let out a squeaky "hm?". Right, another person in this room. Probably just asked him a question. Focus.

As he looked forward, he was met with about the same look as before. Shinsou's eyes only opened a tad bit wider, his eyebrow a tiny bit higher and oh, also a slightly amused upwards quirk of his lips.

"I asked you what you're doing in the kitchen at this early ass hour of the morning?"

Denki shrugged his shoulders.

"Coffee", he grinned, nodding to the probably still boiling pot on the counter behind him.

This time he was only met with an over exaggerated eye roll and then a blank glare, prompting him to disclose perhaps a tiny bit more than the bare obvious.

The blonde sighed, halfway turning into a yawn there. "Couldn't really sleep. Or well, I did, I guess. But not quite- Y'know I-"

Then he cut himself off with another sigh, this one aggravated as he struggled to put the mess in his brain into actual spoken words. Mornings were the worst for trying to tie together the non existent red string of thought.

"Sorry, haha".

As he risked a glance at Shinsou though, he didn't seem to be annoyed or impatient. He was still just looking at him, his gaze having only grown more patient with curiosity now.

Just that small gesture made Denki feel incredibly thankful and safe. So he took another second, before giving it another go.

"Right, so. I meant to sleep, I did, y'know. But then there was still this energy and those unfinished thoughts in my head and it didn't really let me.. rest", he shrugged again, "I did pass out some time, apparently. But I still woke up again a while ago and I figured further forcing myself to lie down and sleep would not be very productive, so.. here we are".

He stated it as matter of factly, but Denki really didn't enjoy those nights. And days. When the mess in his mind was like multiple pieces of a variety of different strings and no matter what he did, he could never quite find a way to untangle or tie them together the right way.

Shinsou was looking at him intensely but interested and seemingly contemplating, so that it almost made Denki want to shy away from it. Had he rambled again? Screw his morning brain.

Just before Denki was able to actually look away though, Shinsou seemed to find what he was searching for with his gaze and he gave a slight nod, as well as an approving hum.

"Yeah, that seems fair".

Denki's shoulders slumped down in relief, without him ever having noticed them being tensed up.

"U-uh, what about you Shinsou? Why're you awake? Did you have trouble sleeping too?", he quickly asked, not wanting the conversation to drift off into an awkward silence too soon.

At this point Shinsou's eyebrow was raised so high, it must be hitting his hair line by now, Denki observed.

As he didn't receive an answer, the blonde cocked his head to the side and continued to look at his classmate with wide, inquisitive eyes.

Shinsou just shook his head, as a low chuckle escaped his lips.

Then he looked him dead in the eye.

"You think I sleep?"

This time, Denki also couldn't control the giggles he erupted in, successfully masking the concern he also felt.

"Pfff, yeah should've seen that coming, right?", he chuckled, before settling into the following quietness.

The silence between them wasn't.. uncomfortable exactly. Sort of comforting even, but with the subconscious staring contest going on between them right now, Denki couldn't help the urge to squirm away from it. In the end, he opted for staring out of the small window to his left.

It let him see a tiny bit of the school's campus. Empty, as expected this early, no one, not even teachers seemed to be up and going right now. They were pretty much alone.

Alone. No one else up. Right, that's why he was here. He was meant to do something, right?- SHIT

"UH!" Denki suddenly choked out in his realization, making Shinsou, seemingly also lost in thought, snap his head and gaze in his direction again.

"Uh..", he repeated a bit quieter. What now? He didn't think this far.

"Do you . Want coffee? I made some. As you can see and like, you came in and i figured you probably-"

"I'd like that", Shinsou interrupted politely, the tiny hint of a smile playing at his lips again.

"R-right", Denki stuttered, as he turned around again, fumbling for the cabinet to get out another mug.

"It's probably a bit cold by now, sorry-"

"That's cool", he was shrugged off.

"-but yeah, anyway, do you want sugar or cream or anything? Or something else? I swear, the monsters in this class drink all kinds there are in this entire universe, so we should have some options. Let me just-"

Just as he was reaching over the pot, threatening to fall and spill, to get to another cabinet containing said ingredients, and he was sure he was going to get burned any second now, there was an unfamiliar warmth settling /right/ behind him and he froze.

A hand reached around him and came up to keep the pot steady, while the other one took hold of the one Denki was using to open the cabinet.

"You're too adorable", a deep voice sounded right next to his ear.

As if his face wasn't warm enough by now.

"But don't worry, I drink my coffee black".

Denki swore he could still feel Shinsou's breath on his cheek as the other let up and retreated from his body again.

If you saw him just so resisting the urge to chase Shinsou's hand that had held his, with his own after releasing it, no you didn't.

After somewhat ( to be honest, not really) regaining control of his breath and the speed of his heart rate, Denki turned around again and almost let out an offended huff at how unphased Shinsou's expression appeared.

"Sorry for that".

Again, he was shrugged off with the shake of Shinsou's head.

"C'mon now, let me handle the coffee situation while you go make some toast or something".

The blonde boy nodded, seemed easy and fair enough. He was about to finally move from his position, as suddenly a hand grabbed his shoulder.

"Don't- don't try to power the toaster with your quirk again though, please. I don't have any evidence,  but I've /heard/ stories and I don't want to die just yet".

Again, Denki let out an embarrassed giggle.

"Don't worry, I'm not doing that to myself, or you, ever again. Like, trust me dude. My brain was fried for so long after that and I'd rather spare you from that", he assured his classmate, before adding, "Oh yeah. And the burning toaster also wasn't fun, so."

Shinsou seemed happy enough with that to, unfortunately, let him go again.

Like that, they both got on and finished their self-assigned tasks and next thing they knew, they were sitting at the big table, across from each other, silently munching on their bread and taking the occasional sip of the /newly/ freshly made coffee.

This silence was comfortable, really. Nothing but the sound of clanks of the plates and mugs here and there.

And then suddenly

"Kaminari?"

Said person raised his head.

"Yeah?", he replied, his mouth still half full, which made the other chuckle lightly.

"If you ever. If you ever have trouble sleeping because of thoughts or.. anything really.. again and you want to talk about it or just anything at all, feel free to text me. You've got my number, right?"

Denki let his fork sink, as he stared at Shinsou with a sort of awed look.

"A-are you sure? Don't you need-"

"I'll be awake", Shinsou immediately retorted, "I'm awake, I'm here. Always."

/Always/, swirled in his head, not ever leaving, not even when the other students of his class started swarming in and the usual loudness and distraction came back.

Suddenly Denki's chest felt very very warm.
