Chapter Text
"I can't believe this!"
Light smiled a little at his sister's enthusiasm. Of course she'd be so happy to hear this news. He wasn't, not really.
I wonder if this would have been exciting before? he wondered. When I didn't have anything to make my life interesting?
He bet his former, naive self would have leapt at the chance to go to America. As it was, he didn't really want to.
It could provide good cover for me, he realized. I wonder if L will realize I'm on a whole other continent?
"You really are special," his mom said, smiling at him as well. "Did you know, only two other students were chosen?"
"Really?" he asked.
Just two? Isn't that a small number?
"Yeah, I heard your sister school is really excited to have you three!" Sayu said. Her eyes were shining as she leaned forward towards him. "And one of them is Misa Misa!"
Light tried to smile. He prided himself on his ability to hide what he was really thinking, but this was stretching what a smile could hide. Why was Sayu so worked up over one girl? Let alone one singer? She'd dragged him to one of Misa Amane's concert's a night or so ago. She hadn't been particularly bad, but she hadn't been very good either. It was very mainstream stuff.
"That's interesting," he said.
"I wonder if you'll have classes together," his mom said. Even she was way too into Misa. Or no, maybe-
"Maybe you'll get to know her! If you do, please let me talk to her!" Sayu said.
Why would I get to know a pop singer? Even if we're both from Japan.
"Who's the third student?" he asked instead. His mom had said there were 2 others, but so far they'd only been talking about Misa.
"I haven't heard who it is yet," she said, sighing a little.
" I heard it was the actor! Hideki Ryuga!" Say said, almost more excited about that idea.
Light frowned at her, and tried not to laugh. This was getting ridiculous.
First a pop star, and now an actor? I doubt he's young enough to be in high school still.
"Really, that's interesting."
"I know!" Sayu was smiling so much, Light couldn't bring himself to insult her favorite celebrities.
"I know you'll do fine in America," his mom said, smiling at him. "You're the top of the nation, after all."
And I've been learning English too, he added, nodding to her words. Thanks for asking about that.
"I can't believe this," Sayu said, still grinning looked up at Light. "My older brother is going to America!"
