Comfort

Summary:

Thinking about WangXian having a bad fight, and when Wei Wuxian decides he's tired of fighting and comes out of the room he'd locked himself in, he sees Lan Wangji very quietly cradling his bunnies with a steady stream of tears running down his cheeks. Wei Wuxian's heart shatters.

Work Text:

"H-hey... Lan Zhan?" Wei Wuxian tries.

Lan Wangji jumps a little. The bunnies take their cue and hop along back into their little huts that Lan Wangji had painstakingly made for them himself a couple months earlier. He looks away, raising his hands to his face, sweeping the hem of his long, white sleeves across his cheeks in an attempt to swipe away his tears.

"Are you okay?" Wei Wuxian kneels down beside him, carefully placing his hand beside Lan Wangji's on the floor, letting just the tips of their fingers touch. Lan Wangji looked so fragile right now Wei Wuxian was afraid to touch him, as if he would break at the slightest bit of pressure.

Lan Wangji doesn't move, but seems to choke on a sob. His cheeks are splattered with blotches of pink where his tears have fallen.

"Wei Ying..." Lan Wangji fidgets with the white fabric over his thigh. "I'm sor- *hic* sorry."

Wei Wuxian wants to giggle at how adorable he is right now, and he would have, if not for the fact that his sweetheart looks absolutely miserable. He's biting his bottom lip, which is chapped and a little raw, like it's been chewed at for a while, probably since Wei Wuxian had locked himself away over an hour ago.

"Oh... Oh baby... What are you sorry for? C'mere."

Wei Wuxian reaches out both arms to Lan Wangji. An invitation. Lan Wangji hesitates, considers Wei Wuxian's bosom for the briefest of moments, then sinks gently and cautiously into the embrace. He presses the bridge of his against the bottom of Wei Wuxian's neck and inhales shakily.

"I'm sorry," Lan Wangji chokes out again, muffled against the skin of Wei Wuxian's neck. "I'm sorry I made you angry."

"Wait- Lan Zhan-"

"I should have listened more, shouldn't have stood in your way. I should have trusted you," Lan Wangji sniffles.

Wei Wuxian chuckles softly. Lan Wangji shifts his head downwards, so he could lean into the vibrations that it sends through Wei Wuxian's chest. His arms wrap tighter around Wei Wuxian's torso, hands resting on his upper back. Wei Ying, I can hear you heartbeat, Lan Wangji thinks, but doesn't say.

It tugs at Wei Wuxian's heartstrings, how small and vulnerable Lan Wangji looks right now.

"Lan Zhan ah, I know you were just worried," Wei Wuxian coos, "I'm sorry for raising my voice at you too."

He places a comforting hand on the back of Lan Wangji's head and strokes his hair gently, to the rhythm of his own breaths. "Did I scare you?"

Lan Wangji shifts in his hold, but doesn't respond.

"You were so upset, my love. What were you thinking?"

At that, Lan Wangji pushes lightly at Wei Wuxian's chest, removing himself from the embrace. His glistening eyes are downcast, chapped lips drawn into a little pout. There is a wrinkle between his brows. Wei Wuxian wants to kiss it away.

"I thought..."

Wei Wuxian reaches up to touch his jaw, rubbing his cheek in encouragement. Lan Wangji has grown more expressive since moving in with Wei Wuxian. But he still needs a nudge sometimes.

"I thought you were done with me. With us. I thought-"

A pause.

"Thought?"

"Thought I'd lose you."

Lan Wangji blinks as a couple more tears make their way down his cheeks.

"Lan Zhan! I can't even stay mad at you! How could I walk away from you?" Wei Wuxian laughs, but there is an ache in his chest. Lan Wangji bites his bottom lip.

"Aiyah! Baobei! Stop doing that, it'll hurt you," Wei Wuxian lets his thumb ghost over Lan Wangji's bottom lip. Lan Wangji's lips part as if by instinct, by habit. So obedient, so good.

Wei Wuxian leans in, eyes fixed on Lan Wangji's lips, chapped and raw. They must hurt. He kisses the left corner of Lan Wangji's mouth, feather-light so it doesn't hurt. A ghost of a kiss.

"Lan Zhan," he starts.

Another kiss, a little to the right now.

"I'm not going anywhere..."

And another.

"Because..."

Lan Wangji stares, marvels at the sight of Wei Wuxian's half-lidded eyes, glazed over with affection for him, fixated on his lips, as Wei Wuxian closes in for another gentle peck.

"I love you."

He closes his eyes, relaxes into Wei Wuxian's gentle hold on his jaw, and lets the last of his tears fall as Wei Wuxian's soft lips brush tenderly against his own.

"So much."

This time, Wei Wuxian catches the teardrop on Lan Wangji's cheek with his lips. He savors the saltiness of it on his tongue, of the tears that have fallen for him, out of love for him. He can't help the fondness that overcomes him.

"I do not want to live a life without you, Lan Zhan."

Lan Wangji opens his eyes to look at Wei Wuxian. For assurance. Wei Wuxian smiles.

Wei Wuxian's eyes are fond, genuine. Beautiful grey eyes that glimmer when he smiles, conveys love beyond what words can carry. Eyes that Lan Wangji had fallen in love with since the first time he'd seen them, and has since sworn never to forget.

"I love you too, Wei Ying."

And Lan Wangji smiles back.
