Work Text:

Kai stormed into their dorm, stomping to his bedroom, slamming the door behind him. Taehyun, who had arrived with him, let out a frustrated sigh as he closed the dorm door. “He has got to be joking,” the blonde grumbled. “He’s absolutely ridiculous.” Soobin, Beomgyu, and Yeonjun watched from the kitchen, confused by the maknaes’ behaviors.

“What’s going on?” Yeonjun asked, looking up from his phone.

“Kai, would you like to come out and explain to the others why you’re so upset with me?” Taehyun yelled, walking towards their room door. The older three all got up and went to the living room for a better view of the sudden drama. Scratch that, the sudden conflict. Yes. Conflict. Not drama. This was a conflict the older members were determined to solve. It was very rare for Kai to be in a bad mood. It was even rarer for him to be upset with any of the members. They gathered on the couch to watch their youngest members.

Kai opened the door slowly and poked his head out, glaring at his boyfriend, then at the other three members. He came out hugging one of his Molangs tightly. The light haired boy waddled to the couch and plopped himself down next to Soobin. The hyungs were especially concerned when they saw fresh tears forming in his pretty eyes.

“Taehyun…” Kai mumbled the rest into his Molang plushie.

“What did you do, Taehyun?” Beomgyu snapped at the younger. Yeonjun also shot Taehyun an angry look.

“Did you break up with him?” Yeonjun questioned.

Taehyun ignored the two. “Speak up, Kai. Come on.”

Kai lowered the plushie slightly, just enough to uncover his mouth. “Taehyun said he wouldn’t date me if I was a worm,” he cried, his voice breaking. “He said-- He said it’s because he wouldn’t be able to tell which end was my face and which end was my butt!”

Soobin, Beomgyu, and Yeonjun exchanged shocked looks, silently agreeing not to laugh at the information. Beomgyu slapped a hand over his mouth and looked away from the youngest’s tear-stained face. Is this really what the young couple were fighting about? Beomgyu excused himself with a “sorry” before going to the bathroom. Muffled laughter was heard from the hallway.

“What kind of boyfriend would say that?” Kai whined, shoving his face into Soobin’s chest.

“I’m just saying I wouldn’t know which end to talk to!” Taehyun reasoned, struggling not to laugh.

“I…” Yeonjun rubbed his temples. “You guys are unbelievable.” The eldest stood up and walked to his room, laughing the whole way.

“Why don’t you just say you’ll still date him, Taehyunie?” Soobin suggests, wrapping an arm around the upset boy.

“Because that would be lying! I’m an honest man!”

Kai lifts his head for a moment to shout “You’re so mean to worms!”

“I’d prefer to date humans, thank you very much,” Taehyun huffed, running a stressed hand through his hair.

Soobin sighed. “Taehyun please-”

“He’s the one that started the stupid worm discussion!”

“You said you would love me no matter what!” Kai retorted, wiping away tears.

“Taehyun I swear to god if you don’t-”

“Okay, fine, I’d still date you if you were a worm,” Taehyun said monotonously.

“Say it like you mean it!” Kai crossed his arms.

“Even if you were a worm, my dear Hyuka, I would still be your beloved boyfriend,” the blonde dramatically held out his hand for the younger. “Is that better?”

“Thank you.” Kai’s expression changed entirely, now back to being bright and smiley. He took his boyfriend’s hand and stood up, leaving Soobin confused and concerned on the couch.

Later that night, in Taehyun and Kai’s shared room, the two were both in the bottom bunk, leaning against each other as they stared at their phones, scrolling mindlessly. An idea popped up in Kai’s head, making him smirk and glance at his boyfriend for a moment. Kai got out of the bed suddenly to grab a blanket from the top bunk. He wrapped it around his body, hiding his arms, before slipping back into the bottom bunk and wiggling next to Taehyun.

“I’m a worm, Hyunnie!” He wiggled a little more to emphasize his point. Taehyun lightly smacked Kai’s cheek, making the other whine.

“Sorry, that was meant for your butt,” the blonde snickered. “I couldn’t tell whi--”

“Taehyun!!!” Kai furrowed his brows and pursed his lips.

“I’m just proving my argument from earlier!”

“Really badly,” Kai buried his face in Taehyun’s neck.

“I’m just kidding, sunshine,” he cooed, ruffling his boyfriend’s hair. “I’ll love you as a worm as much as I love you as a human.”

“Promise?” Kai lifted his face to make eye contact.

“Promise,” Taehyun smiled before connecting his lips with Kai’s for a quick, sweet kiss. “The chances of you turning into a worm are low, anyway.”

“But never zero.”

“That’s… not how life works.”
