The Midoriya Legacy, or: All For One and Izuku’s Army of Father Figures

Summary:

Hisashi isn’t sure how to feel about Izuku getting a Quirk so late in life.

All For One just wants the Universe to stop sending his son replacement parents.

It’s definitely not a sign, or karma.

“When did he even meet All Might?!

Notes:

I’ve read tons of stories where Hisashi is AFO and tons more about Izuku having a different father, so my sleep deprived mind swirled those around and arrived at: Hisashi is AFO and Izuku’s Quirk is replacing him as a parent.

Let me know what you think!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Calling Home

Chapter Text

All For One was by no means a sentimental man.

He didn’t wax poetic about the age of his birth. He didn’t surround himself with the remains of that bygone era or hold onto the memories of people he’d known before. All For One was a man who looked forward, acknowledging his goals and working tirelessly to see them to fruition.

The same could not really be said for Hisashi Midoriya, but even then he had managed to distance himself from his beloved wife and child, knowing his resolve would only weaken if he stayed.

A large part of his being still ached from the loss, urging him to return to Inko’s embrace, to be there as his son grew into a man, but he wouldn’t, couldn’t, not until he was ready for them to take their rightful place at his side and see the new, better world he had created in their name.

So he stayed away.

But even he couldn’t resist the small indulgence of his monthly phone call.

Dialing slowly, All For One leaned back in his chair, allowing Hisashi to return to the forefront of his consciousness.

”Hello?”

“Good morning, Sunshine.” The voice that came from the tattered remains of his vocal chords was completely different. Softer, gentler.

The result of a very good mimicry Quirk, more than worth the hassle it took to obtain and the only way he could continue these calls without explaining his injured state.

”Hisashi!” He could imagine the way Inko’s emerald eyes lit up as she gasped. ”I wasn’t expecting your call until Friday.”

“I finished my project early and couldn’t resist. How has your week been, Love?”

Hisashi never minded that Inko’s reports were almost without fail near perfect copies of what she had said the month before. It soothed him to know she was happy and cared for and safe, and their routine-

“-villain attack, and Izuku-“

Wait.

WHAT?!

“Inko, slow down!” Maybe he had heard her wrong. Maybe his wife of sixteen years hadn’t just told him his son had been in a villain attack and been the one GETTING attacked by the villain.

Inko started from the top.

Hisashi felt his blood pressure rise.

All For One began to plot his revenge.

Apparently, the day before yesterday, Izuku had been walking home alone when some type of sludge-based villain had jumped him, attempting to use his body as a skin suit in order to escape the pursuing heroes.

I don’t care if that pathetic waste of life has been arrested. I will have Kurogiri drag him out Tartarus if I need to and make him pay!

His little Izuku, his precious child, had nearly suffocated to death in the middle of the city, and only survived due to

“His Quirk, Hisashi! Izuku’s Quirk manifested!”

Oh.

He should say something. He should be thrilled, really. Any father would want their son to have a Quirk, especially one strong enough to save them from a villain.

Izuku had been devastated when his fourth, fifth, and then sixth birthday had passed with no sign of a Quirk, even if the X-rays of his feet indicated he should have one.

He’d checked the boy himself, of course, but he hadn’t felt anything there.

Izuku felt Quirkless, and Hisashi had mused on passing over something small, but had ultimately decided against doing so.

(He hadn’t sensed his brother’s ability either, so it was probably a family trait. And wasn’t that just a little irritating? All the time that could have been spent training. Gone.)

He remembered feeling guilt after deciding to leave his son powerless, but Izuku wouldn’t stop talking about heroes!

A lot had happened since then, and he’d imagined...just once or twice...what it would be like to tell Izuku who he really was. To share everything with his son, including his power...

All For One knew how cruel society could be to the Quirkless.

Hisashi could still remember Inko’s sobs when Mitsuki’s son stopped walking home with Izuku after school.

Izuku having a Quirk of his own was a good thing. A blessing.

And yet...

”Hisashi?” Inko’s voice was quieter now, nervous. Dimly, he realized he must have worried her by letting the silence stretch on. ”Aren’t you happy?”

“Of course!” He rushed to reassure her, pushing his concerns back for the moment, to be addressed later. “I’m just...overwhelmed.”

Not a lie.

He forced some excitement into his tone. “I’m thrilled for him, Sunshine! I know how much finding his Quirk means to him. He’s alright, though? No damage from the villain?”

If there was so much as a bruise on that cute, freckled face...

”Izuku’s fine,” Inko sounded better now, accepting his excuse as easily as ever. “He’s been bouncing off the walls since he got home, trying to figure out what he can do now. I think I’ll need to get him another notebook just for his self-studies at this rate.”

Hisashi laughed, imagining the absolute chaos of Izuku analyzing his shiny new Quirk.

He hoped the boy had managed to sleep since then, but he sort of doubted it. Not when his mind must be swimming with the possibilities.

Like father like son.

“Good. I’m glad he’s safe. The things you hear on the news these days...tell Izuku I’ll be sending him a little something to celebrate.”

”Of course! I wish he was home now - he wants to send some of his notes for you to look at, if you have a chance.”

A chance to study Izuku’s new Quirk? He’d destroy his own Nomu prototypes for a peek.

Family Quirks were always so interesting.

Speaking of which...

“Tell him to email them over when you see him. So, you never finished the story. Izuku got his Quirk and managed to escape...what kind of Quirk? Is it telekinesis, or maybe something fire based - though I suppose a being without a solid body could get around-“

On the other end of the line, Inko giggled as Hisashi’s normally smooth, cultured dialect dissolved into a very familiar stream of muttering.

“He’s calling it Legacy, and it’s sort of a...well, he kind of takes someone and...becomes their son, I think?”

“...”

”He really makes the cutest little slime, but it’s good that he dropped it after the first few hours. I’m don’t think the carpet could take it if that was permanent! Though I’m not sure about the second form from that helpful man, Mr. Yagi...Izuku looks nice as a blonde.”

He wasn’t entirely sure what he ended up saying, or how the conversation ended.

All For One’s mind was rushing to process the new information.

Hisashi was numb, trying and failing to picture his son with yellow hair.

For once, both sides of his self were in perfect agreement.

It was about time he started taking a much greater interest in his son’s activities.

And if worst came to worst...

Then the sludge villain wouldn’t be the only person Kurogiri would be collecting when he got back from his current assignment.

Tomura could learn to share his room. It’s not like he ever went more than five feet from his gaming setup anyway.

Quirk: Legacy

Abilities: By touch, the user is able to copy the genetic code of other humans and temporarily overwrite their own DNA. This causes the user to transform into a version of themself in which either the paternal or maternal portion of their DNA has been replaced by that of the other person, effectively becoming their biological child and often inheriting the same Quirk.

Extraction is not painful, but it leaves the source severely fatigued, often to the point of unconsciousness. The user can maintain a record of all extracted material, but can only use one form (and one inherited Quirk) at a time.

Weaknesses: Will resume original form if asleep or unconscious. Transforming between multiple forms per day causes intense migraines. Not all inherited Quirks are ones that can be controlled without training, and can prove dangerous to the user.
