"Keep your eyes closed, loves. Hey Jon, no peeking."
Jon squealed as he brought his hands back up to cover his eyes as Martin swung his legs back and forth, his heels hitting the bottom of the couch. He felt like he was vibrating with excitement because it was Easter! And Mama and Papa told them that they planned a surprise Easter egg hunt for the two of them.
Neither of the two had ever a proper egg hunt before; Martin had spent much of his youth too busy looking after his ailing mother while Jon's grandmother never celebrated any major holidays. So it was safe to say they were more than eager to make up for all the missed opportunities. Jon bounced in his seat and giggled, parting his fingers just a bit in order to get a glimpse of what was happening around him.
"Jon, sweetheart, what did I just say?" Tim's voice called out from somewhere outside Jon's field of vision. "The more you peek, the longer you have to wait."
"Sorry Papa." Jon said, his voice small but laced with anticipation. Why couldn't Papa and Mama just hurry up? It's been ages and Jon really really wanted to look for eggs!
Martin on the other hand, waited patiently as decorations were hung up and eggs were being hidden around him. Don't get him wrong he was excited too but he was mostly looking forward to stuffing his face with various sweets and candies.
"Alright you two, just one more finishing touch," Sasha's voice was right in front of them and something soft was placed on both of their heads, "And... open!"
Jon's hands sprung from his face to the top of his head and he squealed as he felt a pair of soft bunny ears. Turning to the side he saw Martin blushing as he touched his own identical white and pink bunny ear headband. Around them, pastel streamers hung from the ceiling, print outs of baby chicks and bunnies stuck to the wall, and a few foil wrapped chocolate eggs were poking out of clearly visible hiding places.
If Jon's eyes could grow any wider they would've as he took in the rather haphazardly decorated living room. He sprang to his feet and pulled his Mama into a hug, hopping on the spot as he wildly mumbled under his breath.
"Bunny!" Martin beamed as he slid from the couch onto the floor, still playing with the plush ears atop his head.
"That's right, Marto, you're a bunny!" Tim said as he approached his little family in front of the couch. "And as bunnies, it's your jobs to find all the eggs we've hidden around the room. There are twenty eggs in total, ten for Martin and ten for Jon. Do you two remember how much ten is?"
"This many, Papa!" Two pairs of hands with fingers splayed out answered Tim's question and he smiled, handing a colorful pastel basket to each of them.
"That's right! If you need help finding the eggs just let me or Mama know and we can give you a few hints. Now, are we ready?"
Jon and Martin eagerly nodded their heads, their eyes full of wonder and hands clutching onto the wooden wicker baskets.
"Okay, three...two...one...go!"
Instead of the sounds of frantic footsteps as the two ran off in different directions, Jon excitedly held his hand out for Martin to take and they took their time looking in every nook and cranny for their prizes. They each took turns grabbing an egg when they found one, making sure they always had an even number in their separate baskets. Some of the hiding spots were in plain sight, underneath the coffee table, in between the books on the bookshelf, tucked behind the television set, while others were more difficultly hidden to the point where Sasha had to gently guide them to the egg.
But for the most part, Martin and Jon made quick work of finding all twenty eggs while Sasha and Tim relaxed on the couch, taking pictures to preserve some memories.
"All done!" Jon called out as he and Martin ran hand in hand. "We both finded ten eggs each and that means we gots them all!"
"Twenny eggs!" Martin cheerily added.
"Good job you two!" Sasha said, sneakily counting all the eggs in their baskets to make sure they actually found all of them. Satisfied with each of them having the correct number of eggs, she stood up and made her way to the kitchen, "Since you boys did such a great job at the egg hunt, we have a special prize for you."
"A prize?!" Two voices cried out in unison.
"Yup!" Tim replied, leaning back and scrolling through the countless pictures he took. "Make sure to share it."
The prize, it turned out, was an even bigger basket piled high with sweets and toys. They really needed to learn self control when it came to buying Martin and Jon treats but it was always worth it to see the looks of pure childlike joy on their faces.
"Happy Easter!" Sasha said presenting the basket, "This is all for you but you two gotta promise me that you won't eat all the sweets today, okay? Save some so that you can eat some tomorrow too."
"We promise!" "P'omise!"
To be fair, they didn't technically break their promise. There was still two chocolate eggs and a small bag of jelly beans by the time they came down from their sugar rush and fell asleep in Sasha and Tim's bed. They really should've seen this coming but the inevitable stomach aches Martin and Jon got the next day when they woke up fully out of headspace was worth every second.
